Using Raticate in a Playthrough
The Rattata line is an early-game Normal-type line whose main strengths are immediate availability, fast leveling, and strong neutral damage for the portion of the game in which many opposing Pokemon are still unevolved. Raticate's Speed and access to moves such as Hyper Fang, Return, and later Super Fang give it a practical offensive role, and in some generations Guts further improves its ability to punish status and trade efficiently. Its movepool is broad enough to stay useful for a while, but its overall stats are only average and it becomes increasingly outclassed as stronger fully evolved Pokemon become available. As a result, the line is often most valuable as an early or midgame contributor rather than a long-term centerpiece.
Raticate in Competitive Pokémon
Raticate has historically been a lower-tier offensive Pokemon whose most recognizable niche comes from Guts-boosted Facade or similar Normal-type wallbreaking sets. Smogon analyses also associate it with Swords Dance and status-based offensive pressure, but its middling bulk and only moderate power outside these setups make it difficult to position safely. Its Speed is useful rather than exceptional, and the line has never had the defensive utility or raw stats needed to compete comfortably at high levels. It therefore tends to function as a niche lower-tier attacker rather than a broadly reliable competitive pick.
Raticate in Nuzlockes
In Nuzlockes, the Rattata line is usually valued most for its early availability and immediate usefulness. Raticate reaches a functional power level quickly, hits hard enough to clean up weakened teams, and can contribute valuable chip or utility through moves such as Super Fang where available. However, its defenses are not especially forgiving, so it is better used as an offensive or utility piece than as a safe switch-in against unknown threats. It is often a strong temporary carry in the early game, but less likely than bulkier or more specialized Pokemon to remain a defining member of the team deep into a run.

Raticate Biology and Behavior
Raticate relies heavily on its whiskers for balance, and losing or damaging them makes it noticeably less steady. It reacts aggressively if its whiskers are touched and may bite even familiar people, reflecting a highly defensive temperament around that sensory system. The webbing on its feet functions as flippers, allowing it to swim in rivers and even oceans while hunting for food. When threatened, it stands up, bares its large incisors, and shrieks in an attempt to intimidate the enemy.

Raticate Size Comparison: BETA
Raticate is listed at 2' 4" (0.7 m); this chart uses a pose-adjusted visual scale.

How is visual size determined?
Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.
For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.
The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
Raticate currently uses a pose-adjusted visual scale.
