Using Ogerpon Hearthflame Mask in a Playthrough
Ogerpon is a standalone female Legendary Pokémon obtained at the climax of The Teal Mask, and unusually for a Legendary DLC encounter its level depends on when the DLC is completed: it is level 20 if caught before completing The Way Home and level 70 afterward, with the final capture guaranteed after a four-phase mask battle. Its base 120 Attack and 110 Speed already make it an excellent physical attacker, and the four masks create meaningfully different battle configurations rather than cosmetic forms. Teal Mask is pure Grass with Defiant and, because it does not require one of the three held mask items, can use ordinary items such as Heavy-Duty Boots; Wellspring becomes Grass/Water with Water Absorb, Hearthflame becomes Grass/Fire with Mold Breaker, and Cornerstone becomes Grass/Rock with Sturdy. The Wellspring, Hearthflame, and Cornerstone held masks also increase the power of Ogerpon's attacks by 20%, while locking the item slot and fixing Ogerpon's Tera Type to Water, Fire, or Rock respectively; Teal is always Grass Tera. Ivy Cudgel is the centerpiece of every form: it is a perfectly accurate 100-base-power physical move with an increased critical-hit ratio whose type becomes Grass, Water, Fire, or Rock according to the active mask. When Ogerpon Terastallizes, its Ability changes to Embody Aspect and immediately raises one stat by one stage—Speed for Teal, Special Defense for Wellspring, Attack for Hearthflame, or Defense for Cornerstone—giving every mask a distinct Tera payoff. Horn Leech provides accurate Grass damage and recovery, while Swords Dance, Knock Off, Encore, U-turn, Follow Me, Spiky Shield, Stomping Tantrum, and other moves allow Ogerpon to shift between sweeper, pivot, and support roles. Jolly is generally the safest Nature for maintaining base-110 Speed, while Adamant is excellent when the selected mask or team structure already supplies sufficient speed control.
Ogerpon Hearthflame Mask in Competitive Pokémon
Ogerpon is unusual because its four mask forms have genuinely different tiering histories: current Smogon data places Teal Mask and Wellspring Mask in OU, Cornerstone Mask in UUBL, and Hearthflame Mask in Uber. Hearthflame was the immediate singles outlier after The Teal Mask released and was quickbanned from SV OU on September 22, 2023 by a 7-2 council vote; Mold Breaker, the mask's 20% attack-power bonus, Swords Dance, 100-BP Fire Ivy Cudgel, base 110 Speed, and the +1 Attack from Embody Aspect after Terastallizing made defensive counterplay too unreliable. Wellspring instead became one of OU's most durable offensive pivots and wallbreakers, combining Grass/Water typing, Water Absorb, a 20%-boosted Water Ivy Cudgel, Horn Leech, Swords Dance, Encore, Knock Off, U-turn, and a +1 Special Defense Embody Aspect when it Terastallizes. Teal Mask lacks the 20% held-mask damage bonus but can use any normal item, has Defiant to punish opposing stat reduction, and gains +1 Speed from Embody Aspect, supporting flexible pivot, cleaner, or wallbreaker sets. Cornerstone uses Sturdy as built-in one-hit insurance and Rock Ivy Cudgel as strong accurate STAB, but its Grass/Rock defensive profile and mandatory mask make it less broadly consistent, resulting in UUBL rather than OU usage. Ogerpon was just as important in doubles: Follow Me and Spiky Shield let its forms provide redirection and protection while still threatening enormous Ivy Cudgel damage, with Wellspring valued especially for Water Absorb and Hearthflame for offensive pressure. Hearthflame Ogerpon reached the highest possible official result when Luca Ceribelli used it on the team that won the 2024 Pokémon World Championships Masters Division, confirming that the form banned from OU could still be a balanced but elite tool under VGC's doubles rules.
Ogerpon Hearthflame Mask in Nuzlockes
Ogerpon is an exceptional Nuzlocke reward because its capture is guaranteed, it can be obtained as early as level 20 if The Teal Mask is completed before The Way Home, and the same individual can switch among four defensive and offensive configurations between battles. Ivy Cudgel is nearly ideal for permadeath play: it is 100 base power, perfectly accurate, has an increased critical-hit ratio, and changes type with the mask, giving Ogerpon powerful STAB without relying on inaccurate attacks. Wellspring is often the safest general configuration because Water Absorb converts Water attacks into both immunity and healing; Cornerstone can provide emergency insurance through Sturdy when Ogerpon enters at full HP; Teal allows defensive held items and punishes stat drops with Defiant; Hearthflame offers the greatest immediate offensive pressure through Mold Breaker and its Fire typing. Horn Leech adds perfectly accurate recovery through damage, while Spiky Shield can scout and punish contact and Encore can lock a known opponent into a harmless or setup move. Wood Hammer's recoil is much less attractive under permadeath rules when Horn Leech or another Grass attack can accomplish the same objective, and Swords Dance should be reserved for matchups where Ogerpon cannot be surprised by a lethal coverage move. Terastallization can be extremely useful, but Ogerpon cannot choose arbitrary Tera Types: each mask fixes its Tera Type and Embody Aspect boost, so the player must plan around the exact defensive change rather than treating Tera as unrestricted emergency coverage. Because the forms can be changed outside battle, careful mask selection before major fights gives Ogerpon an unusually high ability to reduce matchup risk across an entire run.

Ogerpon Hearthflame Mask Biology and Behavior
The Hearthflame Mask gives Ogerpon Grass/Fire typing and an angry, flame-like visage whose Tera crystals and surrounding mane emphasize the mask's aggressive nature. Canon explicitly describes Ogerpon as becoming its most aggressive in this form, mercilessly spearing opponents with thorn-covered ivy and bombarding them with the intensity of a blazing hearth. The mask's Fire power is said to be capable of turning a candle flame into a raging inferno. Its Mold Breaker Ability reflects the form's ability to attack through opposing defensive Abilities, while Terastallizing into its fixed Fire Tera state activates Embody Aspect and raises Attack.

Ogerpon Hearthflame Mask Size Comparison: BETA
Ogerpon Hearthflame Mask is listed at 3' 11" (1.2 m) and shown in an in-chart visual comparison.

How is visual size determined?
Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.
For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.
The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
