Rolycoly Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage
Using Rolycoly in a Playthrough
Rolycoly evolves into Carkol at level 18 and Coalossal at level 34, giving the line a conventional and reasonably early progression for a three-stage family. Carkol gains Fire typing, and Coalossal finishes as a Rock/Fire tank with base 110 HP, 120 Defense, 90 Special Defense, and only base 30 Speed, making it much better at absorbing attacks and supporting the team than at naturally moving first. Steam Engine is the line's most distinctive Ability because being hit by a Fire- or Water-type attack raises Speed by six stages, instantly compensating for Coalossal's extreme slowness; however, Water is 4× super effective, so deliberately activating the Ability with an enemy Water attack is extremely dangerous outside carefully controlled doubles strategies. Flame Body provides a simpler defensive benefit by giving contact attackers a chance to be burned, while the Hidden Ability Flash Fire grants a Fire immunity and strengthens Coalossal's own Fire moves after activation. Flamethrower, Rock Slide or Rock Blast, Stealth Rock, Spikes, Rapid Spin, Will-O-Wisp, and Body Press give Coalossal substantial utility, but its Rock/Fire typing also creates 4× weaknesses to both Water and Ground along with Fighting and Rock weaknesses. Gigantamax Coalossal gains G-Max Volcalith, which deals Rock damage and leaves non-Rock opponents taking residual damage for several turns; in ordinary Sword/Shield story play this can be extremely powerful against multi-Pokémon bosses or Dynamax battles. Bold, Calm, or Sassy can emphasize its defensive utility, while Modest or Adamant are reasonable when the player wants Coalossal to exploit Steam Engine as an offensive sweeper.
Rolycoly in Competitive Pokémon
Coalossal has two very different competitive histories: a modest lower-tier singles role and a much more significant doubles/VGC career built around Steam Engine and Gigantamax. In Sword and Shield singles it is ZU, where Heavy-Duty Boots, Flame Body, Stealth Rock or Spikes, Rapid Spin, Rock Blast, and Flamethrower give it useful role compression as both an entry-hazard setter and remover. That defensive utility is limited by 4× Water and Ground weaknesses, a lack of reliable recovery, and dependence on Heavy-Duty Boots to avoid taking heavy Stealth Rock damage whenever it switches. In VGC 2020 and 2021, however, Coalossal became a major offensive archetype: a partner's weak Aqua Jet or Surf could activate both Steam Engine and Weakness Policy while Coalossal Dynamaxed or Gigantamaxed, producing a six-stage Speed increase and two-stage boosts to both attacking stats in a single turn. G-Max Volcalith then added residual Rock damage to both opposing Pokémon for four turns, making the strategy powerful even when Coalossal did not score immediate knockouts; Smogon described it as one of the strongest Gigantamax Pokémon in the relevant format. Scarlet and Violet remove Dynamax but currently place ordinary Coalossal in PU, where Flame Body, Rapid Spin, Stealth Rock or Spikes, and solid mixed bulk preserve a defensive niche even though the signature doubles explosion is no longer available. Coalossal's history therefore demonstrates an important format split: an ordinary lower-tier utility Pokémon in singles became a genuinely metagame-defining threat when doubles mechanics let allies safely trigger Steam Engine.
Rolycoly in Nuzlockes
Coalossal can be useful in a Nuzlocke because the family evolves at straightforward levels, has excellent physical bulk, and provides both Fire and Rock coverage without requiring special evolution items. Flame Body is especially valuable for survival because contact attackers may be burned automatically, cutting their physical damage and making later turns much safer without requiring Coalossal to spend a turn using Will-O-Wisp. Steam Engine should be treated very differently from its competitive doubles use: allowing a wild or boss Water attack to hit Coalossal merely to gain Speed is usually reckless because Water deals 4× damage, and Ground attacks are equally dangerous. Flash Fire is a strong alternative when available because a genuine Fire immunity creates safe switches and avoids the risk of trying to exploit Steam Engine manually. Rapid Spin can remove hazards for the entire team and Stealth Rock can shorten opposing battles, while accurate Flamethrower and Rock Blast or Rock Slide are generally safer than recoil-heavy or highly inaccurate alternatives. Coalossal's low natural Speed means it often must survive the first attack before acting, so the player should exploit known resistances and avoid uncertain Water, Ground, Fighting, or Rock coverage despite its impressive 110/120/90 bulk.

Most of its body has the same composition as coal. Fittingly, this Pokémon was first discovered in coal mines about 400 years ago.
It can race around like a unicycle, even on rough, rocky terrain. Burning coal sustains it.

Rolycoly Biology and Behavior
Rolycoly's body is composed largely of the same material as coal, and the species was first discovered in Galarian coal mines roughly 400 years ago. Its single wheel-like leg lets it roll across rough rocky ground with surprising speed, functioning much like a biological unicycle. Burning coal inside the body supplies the energy that sustains its movement. On sunny days Rolycoly may leave rocky areas to roll through grassy plains and eat grass that becomes tangled around its wheel. Pieces of its outer body eventually flake away with age, and people have historically collected those fragments to use as a substitute fuel source.

Rolycoly Size Comparison: BETA
Rolycoly is listed at 1' 0" (0.3 m) and shown in an in-chart visual comparison.

How is visual size determined?
Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.
For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.
The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
