Vulpix's Weaknesses and Resistances

Evolution Chain

Vulpix evolves into Ninetales with a Fire Stone.

Forms

Vulpix Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage

Using Vulpix in a Playthrough

The Vulpix line develops into a fast, specially bulky Fire-type whose value comes from reliable Fire damage and useful status options rather than overwhelming raw power. Ninetales can use moves such as Flamethrower, Will-O-Wisp, and Confuse Ray to combine offense with disruption, while its Speed often lets it apply that utility before taking damage. Because Ninetales evolves with a Fire Stone, evolution timing can matter in games where Vulpix learns important moves before Ninetales does. In generations and situations where Drought is available, Ninetales gains substantially stronger Fire attacks and immediate sun support, while Alolan Ninetales functions very differently as a fast Ice/Fairy attacker and support Pokemon with Snow Warning and Aurora Veil.

Vulpix in Competitive Pokémon

Standard Ninetales gained its clearest competitive identity through Drought, allowing it to function as a sun setter that strengthens Fire attacks and enables immediate Solar Beam for itself and its teammates. Its Speed and utility movepool also support disruptive options, but relatively modest offensive stats and competition from other weather setters have generally kept standard Ninetales from being a dominant individual attacker. Alolan Ninetales has established a stronger and more distinctive support niche through Snow Warning and Aurora Veil, using its high Speed to reduce incoming physical and special damage for the entire team before bringing in setup sweepers or other offensive threats. Its Ice/Fairy STAB and options such as Freeze-Dry prevent it from being completely passive, though its defensive typing includes several exploitable weaknesses.

Vulpix in Nuzlockes

The Vulpix line offers useful Nuzlocke value through Speed, special bulk, Fire typing, and access to moves that reduce risk rather than relying exclusively on damage. FireRed and LeafGreen community analyses particularly emphasize Will-O-Wisp and Confuse Ray, which allow Ninetales to weaken physical attackers and disrupt dangerous opponents before they can act, while Flamethrower gives it dependable STAB without recoil. Its offensive stats are not exceptional, so it is less suited to simply overpowering neutral opponents than stronger Fire-types such as Arcanine. Where Drought is obtainable it can substantially improve its offensive value, while Alolan Ninetales adds an entirely different form of team protection through Aurora Veil in games where that form is available.

Vulpix Biology and Behavior

Vulpix is born with a single white tail that divides as it grows, eventually producing the multiple curled tails associated with the species; the tails become hotter as it approaches evolution. It contains an internal flame that never goes out and regulates its temperature by expelling fire from its mouth when the surrounding environment becomes too warm, even doing so while asleep. Vulpix can manipulate fire with enough precision to produce floating wisps that humans sometimes mistake for ghosts, and it uses these flames while hunting prey. When confronted by an opponent too powerful to defeat, Vulpix has been documented feigning injury to create an opportunity to escape.

How is visual size determined?

Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.

For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.

The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.

Vulpix currently uses a pose-adjusted visual scale.
