Croconaw Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage
Using Croconaw in a Playthrough
The Totodile line is one of the most consistently useful Johto starter families, combining strong physical bulk, high Attack, straightforward Water typing, and only Grass and Electric weaknesses. In Generations II and III its high Attack does not fully align with Water STAB because Water moves are special, but physical coverage still lets Feraligatr make good use of its strongest stat; the Generation IV physical/special split is a major improvement because moves such as Waterfall can finally use its Attack directly. Later movepools give Feraligatr access to physical Water attacks, Dark- and Ice-type coverage, priority, and setup options such as Dragon Dance or Swords Dance, making it capable of functioning as a durable physical sweeper rather than merely a bulky Water-type. Its moderate Speed prevents it from effortlessly moving first against every opponent, but its physical Defense often gives it enough room to take a hit and continue attacking. Where Mega Feraligatr is available, Water/Dragon typing and enormous increases to Attack and Defense push the line much further toward the role of a powerful physical wallbreaker.
Croconaw in Competitive Pokémon
Feraligatr's competitive reputation improved dramatically once the physical/special split allowed physical Water STAB to use its base 105 Attack. Dragon Dance and Swords Dance have supported two different sweeping styles, while Aqua Jet can compensate for its only moderate Speed and provide useful priority. Its Hidden Ability Sheer Force became especially important in later generations because it strengthens many of Feraligatr's attacks with secondary effects and can be paired with Life Orb for substantial damage without the usual recoil on Sheer Force-boosted moves. These traits made Feraligatr a recurring lower-tier wallbreaker and setup sweeper, although it has often competed with faster or more immediately threatening Water-types. Mega Feraligatr raises the line's ceiling again in formats where it is legal, becoming Water/Dragon with dramatically greater Attack and physical Defense and turning into a much more imposing direct physical threat.
Croconaw in Nuzlockes
The Totodile line is an excellent Nuzlocke starter because its combination of good HP, strong physical Defense, useful Water typing, and only two ordinary weaknesses gives it a large margin for error in many neutral matchups. Totodile and Croconaw are capable of contributing throughout the early game rather than merely being carried until their final evolution, and Feraligatr's high Attack lets it become a dependable finisher once strong physical moves are available. The physical/special split makes the line noticeably better from Generation IV onward because its primary Water attacks can finally use its stronger attacking stat, while Ice and Dark coverage can help answer several common threats without requiring another team slot. Its main dangers are powerful Grass and Electric attacks and the fact that its middling Speed means it will often take a hit before moving, so its bulk should not be mistaken for invulnerability. Overall, Feraligatr is one of the safer starter endpoints for a Nuzlocke because it combines reliable offense with enough durability to survive mistakes that would kill a frailer sweeper.

If it loses a fang, a new one grows back in its place. There are always 48 fangs lining its mouth.
It opens its huge jaws wide when attacking. If it loses any fangs while biting, they grow back in.
The tips of its fangs are slanted backward. Once those fangs clamp down, the prey has no hope of escape.
Once CROCONAW has clamped its jaws on its foe, it will absolutely not let go. Because the tips of its fangs are forked back like barbed fishhooks, they become impossible to remove when they have sunk in.

Croconaw Biology and Behavior
Croconaw possesses a permanent set of forty-eight fangs whose backward-slanting tips function much like barbed hooks. Once its teeth penetrate something, their shape makes them extremely difficult to pull free, and Croconaw is described as refusing to release its bite even if doing so causes some of its teeth to break out. Lost fangs rapidly grow back, maintaining the full set of forty-eight throughout its life. Croconaw also retains the family's unusual sleep behavior, resting only half of its brain at a time while one eye remains open to watch for approaching threats.

Croconaw Size Comparison: BETA
Croconaw is listed at 3' 7" (1.1 m); this chart uses a pose-adjusted visual scale.

How is visual size determined?
Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.
For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.
The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
Croconaw currently uses a pose-adjusted visual scale.
