Ferroseed Ferroseed Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage
Using Ferroseed in a Playthrough
Ferroseed evolves into Ferrothorn at level 40, producing one of the strongest defensive Grass/Steel Pokemon available in a normal playthrough. Ferrothorn has base 131 Defense, 116 Special Defense, and only base 20 Speed, allowing it to absorb a huge range of neutral and resisted attacks while using Power Whip, Gyro Ball, Knock Off in later games, Leech Seed, Spikes, Stealth Rock, Thunder Wave, and Protect. Iron Barbs damages opponents that make contact, which can punish physical attackers without Ferrothorn spending a turn, while the Hidden Ability Anticipation warns of certain dangerous moves but is usually less generally useful. Its extreme slowness makes Gyro Ball unusually powerful and also makes a Speed-lowering nature such as Relaxed or Sassy beneficial rather than harmful. Grass/Steel gives a long list of resistances and a Poison immunity, but Fighting is super effective and Fire deals quadruple damage, so even weak unexpected Fire coverage can be lethal. Ferrothorn lacks conventional instant recovery, making Leech Seed, Leftovers, Protect, and careful switching central to keeping it healthy over long routes.
Ferroseed in Competitive Pokémon
Ferrothorn is one of the defining support Pokemon of BW OU. Its 74/131/116 bulk and Grass/Steel typing let it repeatedly switch into many of the generation's strongest Water-, Dragon-, Electric-, and Rock-type attacks, making it especially valuable in a weather metagame dominated by rain and powerful Dragons. Spikes, Stealth Rock, Leech Seed, Thunder Wave, Knock Off in later rulesets, and Iron Barbs give it enormous role compression, while Power Whip and a very strong Gyro Ball prevent it from becoming completely passive. Smogon describes Ferrothorn as one of BW OU's most effective supporters and one of its best Spikes setters, and that general identity persisted through multiple later generations of OU play. Fire and Fighting coverage remain the primary answers, while burn and the absence of reliable one-turn recovery can gradually undermine it, but few defensive Pokemon have matched Ferrothorn's combination of hazard setting, contact punishment, typing, and mixed bulk.
Ferroseed in Nuzlockes
Ferrothorn is extremely safe in many Nuzlocke matchups because its defensive stats and typing allow it to wall large portions of ordinary trainer teams. Iron Barbs punishes contact automatically, while Leech Seed can provide sustainable recovery and reduce the need to spend healing items in long fights. Gyro Ball is especially effective because Ferrothorn's very low Speed naturally maximizes the move against fast opponents, and Power Whip provides strong Grass damage without recoil. The critical exception is Fire: a quadruple weakness means an unexpected Flamethrower, Fire Punch, or similar coverage move can kill even a healthy Ferrothorn, while Fighting attacks are also dangerous. Relaxed or Sassy are excellent natures because lowering Speed improves Gyro Ball and barely affects Ferrothorn's intended role.

It defends itself by launching spikes, but its aim isn’t very good at first. Only after a lot of practice will it improve.
Mossy caves are their preferred dwellings. Enzymes contained in mosses help Ferroseed’s spikes grow big and strong.

Ferroseed Biology and Behavior
Ferroseed prefers mossy caves, where it drives its spikes into rock walls and absorbs iron and other minerals. When threatened, it fires a barrage of spikes and uses the distraction to roll away from danger. Young Ferroseed are initially inaccurate when launching their spikes and improve through practice. In animation, nutrients absorbed from different rocks can influence the moss Ferroseed grows, showing that its mineral diet directly affects its body.

Ferroseed Size Comparison: BETA
Ferroseed is listed at 2' 0" (0.6 m) and shown in an in-chart visual comparison.

How is visual size determined?
Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.
For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.
The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
