Using Lotad in a Playthrough
The Lotad line is a Water/Grass family whose unusual typing gives it excellent role compression, particularly in regions where a team wants both reliable Water offense and an answer to opposing Water- and Ground-types. Lotad evolves into Lombre at level 14, while Lombre requires a Water Stone to become Ludicolo; the stone requirement gives the player control over evolution timing but may also encourage delaying evolution if useful level-up moves are easier to obtain as Lombre in a particular game. In Generation III both Water and Grass attacks are special, which aligns well with Ludicolo's base 90 Special Attack and gives it two functional STAB types immediately, while its base 100 Special Defense provides useful durability. Swift Swim can double Speed in rain and transform base 70 Speed into a genuine sweeping asset, while Rain Dish instead provides passive healing during rain and supports a more defensive style. Water/Grass leaves only Bug, Flying, and Poison weaknesses and grants a quadruple Water resistance, making Ludicolo unusually comfortable against many Water-types even though only average physical Defense prevents it from functioning as a universal tank.
Lotad in Competitive Pokémon
Ludicolo has maintained a legitimate competitive identity through the unusual combination of Water/Grass typing, good Special Defense, and two abilities built around rain. In ADV it could function as a special sponge and answer to opposing Water-types such as Swampert, while Swift Swim sets used Rain Dance to double Speed and attack with boosted Water STAB alongside Grass and Ice coverage. Later lower-tier metagames continued to use the same basic formula: rain turns Ludicolo into a fast special attacker whose Water, Grass, and Ice coverage is difficult for offensive teams to switch into safely. Rain Dish supports a different approach using Leech Seed, Protect, recovery, and passive healing, although this style is usually more vulnerable to strong physical attackers because Ludicolo's Defense is only base 70. Its reliance on rain for maximum offensive pressure and weaknesses to Bug, Flying, and Poison keep it from being universally dominant, but Ludicolo is one of the more enduring and recognizable non-legendary rain specialists in the series.
Lotad in Nuzlockes
The Lotad line is an excellent Nuzlocke family when available because Water/Grass typing creates a compact weakness profile and a particularly valuable quadruple resistance to Water. Lotad reaches Lombre early at level 14, and the player can choose when to use a Water Stone rather than waiting for a very high evolution level, although evolving too quickly can affect access to certain level-up moves depending on the game. Ludicolo's good Special Defense makes many special Water, Ice, and neutral attacks relatively safe, while Grass STAB gives it a natural answer to Water/Ground Pokemon that can trouble ordinary Water-types. Swift Swim can make rain battles much safer by letting Ludicolo move first, whereas Rain Dish rewards longer defensive fights with passive healing. Strong physical Flying or Bug attacks and Poison coverage remain important hazards, but overall the line offers one of the more forgiving combinations of typing, utility, and special durability among Hoenn's early families.

This POKéMON lives in ponds with clean water. It is known to ferry small POKéMON across ponds by carrying them on the broad leaf on its head.
It looks like an aquatic plant and serves as a ferry to Pokémon that can’t swim.
Its leaf grew too large for it to live on land. That is how it began to live floating in the water.

Lotad Biology and Behavior
Lotad is an aquatic plant Pokemon whose broad lilypad-like leaf allows its small body to float easily across ponds and lakes. It sometimes carries smaller Pokemon across the water on its back, and the leaf naturally repels dirt well enough to remain clean even after transporting muddy passengers. The leaf must remain hydrated to stay healthy; if Lotad becomes too dry it begins to wilt, and the species may leave the water on rare occasions specifically to search for a cleaner habitat. Lotad gather most densely on lakes with high water quality, where enough individuals can cover large portions of the surface with their leaves.

Lotad Size Comparison: BETA
Lotad is listed at 1' 8" (0.5 m); this chart uses a pose-adjusted visual scale.

How is visual size determined?
Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.
For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.
The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
Lotad currently uses a pose-adjusted visual scale.
