Chi Yu Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage
Using Chi Yu in a Playthrough
Chi-Yu is a standalone Dark/Fire Legendary Pokémon obtainable in both Scarlet and Violet after the player removes the eight light-blue stakes sealing the Firescourge Shrine and catches the level-60 Pokémon inside. Its current base 135 Special Attack, base 120 Special Defense, and base 100 Speed already form an excellent special-offense profile, and Beads of Ruin multiplies the Special Defense of every other active Pokémon by 0.75, making Chi-Yu's attacks far stronger than its base Special Attack alone indicates. Flamethrower and Dark Pulse are perfectly accurate and reliable STAB options, while Overheat and Fire Blast offer greater immediate Fire damage at the cost of a two-stage Special Attack drop or imperfect accuracy respectively. Psychic and Tera Blast can address specific coverage problems, and Nasty Plot can raise Special Attack by two stages if Chi-Yu receives a safe setup turn. Dark/Fire provides a Psychic immunity and six useful resistances, but Fighting, Ground, Rock, and Water weaknesses are common and base 55 HP leaves Chi-Yu less physically durable than its high Special Defense may imply. Ruination can halve the current HP of bulky targets but is normally less efficient in story battles than simply exploiting Beads of Ruin with direct special damage. Timid improves the useful but not unbeatable base 100 Speed, while Modest pushes Chi-Yu's already extreme wallbreaking power even higher.
Chi Yu in Competitive Pokémon
Chi-Yu is currently Uber and was one of the first ordinary Pokémon removed from SV OU, receiving a unanimous 9-0 quickban vote on January 8, 2023 after becoming one of the most centralizing early threats in the metagame. Beads of Ruin reduces every other active Pokémon's Special Defense to 75%, which effectively amplifies attacks from base 135 Special Attack before Choice Specs, sun, Nasty Plot, or Terastallization are even considered. In Ubers, Choice Specs and Choice Scarf sets use Overheat, Flamethrower or Fire Blast, and Dark Pulse to function as wallbreakers or revenge killers, while sun from Koraidon can raise Fire damage to levels that threaten even dedicated special walls. Its drawbacks are much more meaningful in Ubers than they were in OU: base 55 HP makes safe entry difficult, Stealth Rock removes one-quarter of its health, several common physical attackers can revenge kill it, and Choice-locked sets can be exploited through prediction. Chi-Yu has also enjoyed a substantial official VGC career because Beads of Ruin reduces the Special Defense of both opponents, empowering partners such as Flutter Mane, Miraidon, or other spread special attackers while Chi-Yu contributes Heat Wave, Dark Pulse, Overheat, Snarl, or Protect. That role remained successful late into SV competition: Chi-Yu appeared on multiple top-cut teams at the 2025 World Championships, including Senior Division semifinal and quarterfinal teams. As with the other Ruinous Pokémon, Beads of Ruin also lowers an allied Pokémon's Special Defense in doubles, so the extraordinary offensive payoff comes with a real team-building and positioning cost.
Chi Yu in Nuzlockes
Chi-Yu can function as an exceptional Nuzlocke wallbreaker if Legendary encounters are allowed, because perfectly accurate Flamethrower and Dark Pulse become extremely strong after Beads of Ruin reduces the target's Special Defense. Its base 120 Special Defense gives it real resilience against special attacks, and Psychic immunity plus resistances to Dark, Fire, Ghost, Grass, Ice, and Steel create several safe entry points against known movesets. The much smaller base 55 HP pool and only base 80 Defense mean physical attacks remain dangerous, particularly from Fighting-, Ground-, Rock-, and Water-type opponents. Overheat's perfect accuracy is attractive for emergency power but the two-stage Special Attack reduction can make the following turns dangerous if Chi-Yu cannot switch, while Fire Blast introduces unnecessary miss variance when Flamethrower already secures the needed knockout. Nasty Plot can produce overwhelming sweeps, but spending a turn setting up is often unnecessary for a Pokémon whose Ability already multiplies effective special damage. Ruination's 90% accuracy makes it less desirable than a direct attack when a miss could expose Chi-Yu to lethal retaliation. Used as a fast special attacker and selectively switched into resisted special moves rather than asked to tank neutral physical damage, Chi-Yu can be extremely reliable.

Chi Yu Biology and Behavior
Chi-Yu is a fish-shaped Pokémon whose true core is the pair of ancient curved jade beads that form its eyes, while the rest of its body consists of living flame. The beads were once treated as sacred objects and became the focus of repeated conflict; the envy of people who desired them accumulated until it gave rise to the Pokémon. Chi-Yu's flames exceed 5,400°F (3,000°C), hot enough to melt rock and sand into lava. It then swims casually through the molten material it creates, making the Beads of Ruin both a supernatural artifact and the center of an organism capable of radically altering its physical environment.

Chi Yu Size Comparison: BETA
Chi Yu is listed at 1' 4" (0.4 m) and shown in an in-chart visual comparison.

How is visual size determined?
Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.
For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.
The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
