Wo Chien Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage
Using Wo Chien in a Playthrough
Wo-Chien is a standalone Dark/Grass Legendary Pokémon obtainable in both Scarlet and Violet by removing the eight purple stakes sealing the Grasswither Shrine in South Province and then challenging the level-60 Pokémon inside. Its defining battle traits are base 135 Special Defense, solid 85 HP and 100 Defense, and Tablets of Ruin, which multiplies the Attack stat of every other active Pokémon by 0.75 and therefore makes physical opponents noticeably easier for Wo-Chien to endure. Dark/Grass grants a Psychic immunity and resistances to Dark, Electric, Ghost, Grass, Ground, and Water, but the typing also carries six ordinary weaknesses plus a devastating 4× Bug weakness. Ruination removes half of a target's current HP when it hits and is excellent for wearing down high-HP opponents, while Giga Drain, Dark Pulse, Foul Play, Knock Off, Leech Seed, Protect, and Rest can support defensive or attrition-focused play. Its lack of immediate, reliable full recovery outside Rest prevents it from functioning like an effortless story wall, and Leech Seed and Ruination are only 90% accurate, so prolonged battles still contain meaningful variance. In doubles, Tablets of Ruin also weakens the Attack of Wo-Chien's own ally unless that Pokémon also has Tablets of Ruin, an important cost that does not exist in ordinary singles play. Bold or Impish can emphasize physical durability behind Tablets of Ruin, while Calm or Careful can push its already excellent special bulk even further depending on whether the set uses special attacks or Foul Play and Knock Off.
Wo Chien in Competitive Pokémon
Wo-Chien is currently PU in Smogon's SV usage tiers, but it has continued to demonstrate viability above that placement because Tablets of Ruin, 85/100/135 defensive stats, and a useful resistance profile give it a specialized defensive niche. Current NU analysis highlights its ability to check or annoy dangerous attackers through Knock Off, Foul Play or Ruination, Leech Seed, Protect, and RestTalk, with Tablets of Ruin helping it survive physical damage that its typing alone would not handle. Its problems are structural: Grass/Dark has seven weaknesses including a 4× Bug weakness, U-turn is therefore especially punishing, it lacks straightforward instant recovery, and common Grass-types can ignore Leech Seed while many offensive Pokémon threaten it super effectively. Ruination is useful because it cuts through high defensive stats by removing half of current HP, but 90% accuracy and its inability to KO by itself make Wo-Chien dependent on chip damage, hazards, teammates, or follow-up attacks. In VGC, Tablets of Ruin can weaken both opposing physical attackers simultaneously but also suppresses the Attack of Wo-Chien's partner, so successful teams usually pair it with special attackers or Pokémon whose job is not primarily physical damage. Its doubles support toolkit includes Pollen Puff for ally healing, Leech Seed, Snarl, Ruination, and Protect; official 2026 EUIC preview discussion noted that Wo-Chien had previously top-cut both Worlds and NAIC before largely disappearing from the contemporary field. That history makes it a good example of a low-usage singles Pokémon whose unique Ability and support tools have still produced meaningful niches in stronger formats.
Wo Chien in Nuzlockes
Wo-Chien can be an exceptionally durable Nuzlocke Pokémon if the ruleset permits Legendary encounters, but obtaining it requires deliberately finding all eight purple stakes and opening the Grasswither Shrine rather than simply encountering it on a route. Tablets of Ruin is superb survival support in singles because every opposing physical attack is calculated from an Attack stat reduced to 75% of its normal value, substantially increasing Wo-Chien's effective physical bulk before any other defensive strategy is used. Its base 135 Special Defense is already excellent, giving Wo-Chien strong mixed durability in neutral matchups, but the seven weaknesses of Grass/Dark—especially the 4× Bug weakness—mean an unexpected U-turn or other Bug attack can bypass that apparent safety very quickly. Giga Drain is a perfectly accurate source of damage and healing, while Leech Seed can provide sustained recovery but is only 90% accurate and fails against Grass-types; Rest fully restores HP and status but forces sleep turns unless supported appropriately. Ruination is strong for controlling high-HP targets because it always removes half of their current HP when successful, yet its 90% accuracy makes it less reliable when a miss would expose Wo-Chien to lethal retaliation. Foul Play is particularly attractive against physical setup users because it uses the target's Attack stat for damage while Tablets of Ruin simultaneously reduces the damage those Pokémon can deal back. Wo-Chien is therefore safest as a deliberate attrition specialist against known neutral or resisted damage rather than a universal wall that ignores its unusually severe weakness profile.

Wo Chien Biology and Behavior
Wo-Chien is one of the four Treasures of Ruin, appearing as a large snail-like mass of dead leaves, moss, and vines surrounding a curled row of ancient wooden writing tablets that forms its shell. Those tablets are its true core: the grudge of a person punished for recording an ancient king's evil deeds accumulated within them and gave rise to the Pokémon, while the leafy body was constructed through Wo-Chien's control over plant matter. The inscriptions on the tablets have faded until they can no longer be read. Wo-Chien can drain the life force from vegetation across a wide area, causing forests to wither and cultivated fields to become barren almost instantly, making its presence an ecological threat even without direct aggression toward people or Pokémon.

Wo Chien Size Comparison: BETA
Wo Chien is listed at 4' 11" (1.5 m) and shown in an in-chart visual comparison.

How is visual size determined?
Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.
For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.
The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
