Forms

Dugtrio Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage

Using Dugtrio in a Playthrough

The Diglett line is built around extreme Speed and strong Ground-type offense rather than durability. Dugtrio can outspeed much of the opposition and use moves such as Dig and Earthquake to remove Electric-, Poison-, Rock-, Fire-, and Steel-type targets before they retaliate, while its Ground typing grants a complete Electric immunity. In Kanto, Diglett's Cave makes the line available immediately before Lt. Surge and can provide a particularly strong answer to that Gym, with Dugtrio sometimes appearing there already evolved. Its extremely low HP and physical bulk make mistakes dangerous, however, so Dugtrio performs best when it can secure a knockout rather than exchange attacks.

Dugtrio in Competitive Pokémon

Dugtrio has one of the most distinctive competitive histories among early-generation Pokemon because of Arena Trap, which prevents many grounded opponents from switching. This allowed Dugtrio to function as a dedicated trapper and eliminator, using its exceptional Speed to remove specific weakened or vulnerable targets that would normally escape into a teammate. Smogon describes Dugtrio as a prominent trapping Pokemon across multiple generations, with Arena Trap becoming powerful and controversial enough to be banned in several competitive environments. Outside formats where Arena Trap is permitted, Dugtrio's limited bulk and only moderate offensive strength greatly reduce its niche despite its excellent Speed.

Dugtrio in Nuzlockes

Dugtrio can be extremely useful in Kanto Nuzlockes because Diglett's Cave provides a highly reliable Ground-type encounter immediately before Lt. Surge, allowing the line to neutralize one of the game's major early Electric-type battles. Its excellent Speed also makes it a strong cleaner and helps compensate for its fragile defenses by allowing it to attack first. Community FireRed and LeafGreen analyses disagree somewhat on its overall tier because its low bulk can cause sudden deaths, but they consistently recognize its Surge matchup, Ground typing, and access to strong Ground STAB as important strengths. Dugtrio therefore rewards careful matchup planning more than defensive play: when it has a safe offensive advantage it can be excellent, but it is poorly suited to absorbing unexpected attacks.

Dugtrio Biology and Behavior

Dugtrio consists of three Diglett-like heads sharing a single buried body, with all three generally thinking and acting cooperatively. The heads bob independently to loosen earth while digging, allowing Dugtrio to tunnel at extremely high speeds and great depths; its underground movement can produce tremors and earthquakes. Dugtrio has an important ecological and agricultural role because its tunneling aerates soil, and it has also been documented maintaining soil and planting trees to revitalize wooded environments. The three heads remain coordinated even while sleeping, although rare disputes can occur over which head gets to eat first.

How is visual size determined?

Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.

For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.

The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
