Using Helioptile in a Playthrough
Helioptile evolves into Heliolisk with a Sun Stone, allowing the player to choose when to trade the unevolved form's level-up moves for the final form's much stronger stats. Heliolisk is Electric/Normal with matching base 109 Special Attack and Speed, base 94 Special Defense, but frail 62 HP and 52 Defense. Thunderbolt and Volt Switch provide reliable Electric STAB, Hyper Voice supplies Normal STAB, and Surf, Grass Knot, Dark Pulse, Focus Blast, Glare, and other coverage give it an unusually broad special movepool. Dry Skin is generally the safest ability because Water-type moves heal Heliolisk instead of damaging it and rain restores additional HP, though Fire moves deal extra damage and harsh sunlight causes chip; Sand Veil instead benefits from sand, while the Hidden Ability Solar Power sharply boosts Special Attack in sun at the cost of HP each turn. Electric/Normal grants a Ghost immunity in addition to Electric, Flying, and Steel resistances, but is weak to Fighting and Ground. Timid is usually ideal because base 109 Speed is one of Heliolisk's best defensive tools.
Helioptile in Competitive Pokémon
Heliolisk was an XY UU Pokemon with a clear offensive-pivot niche. Base 109 Speed let it outrun common threats around the base 108 benchmark, while Thunderbolt, Volt Switch, Hyper Voice, Surf, Grass Knot, Focus Blast, and Dark Pulse made switching into it surprisingly difficult. Dry Skin is especially valuable competitively because it grants a Water immunity and rain recovery, allowing Heliolisk to exploit bulky Water-types rather than merely threatening them with Electric STAB. Smogon later described Heliolisk as one of SM NU's best offensive pivots and bulky-Water exploiters for the same reason. The consistent weakness is physical durability: 62 HP and 52 Defense mean even neutral physical attacks can deal enormous damage, so Heliolisk depends on immunities, speed, and Volt Switch rather than conventional switching. Solar Power sun sets can generate much greater immediate damage but are less sustainable because they lose HP every turn in sunlight.
Helioptile in Nuzlockes
Heliolisk is extremely useful when its immunities can be planned around. Normal typing grants a Ghost immunity, Dry Skin can add a complete Water immunity, and Volt Switch lets Heliolisk attack while immediately leaving unfavorable matchups. Its physical bulk is extremely poor, however, so strong neutral contact moves can be dangerous even when they are not super effective, and Fighting or Ground attacks are especially threatening. Thunderbolt and Hyper Voice are safer than inaccurate options, while Surf provides reliable coverage against many Ground-types that would otherwise block Electric attacks. Solar Power can create exceptional damage in sun but continuously drains HP, making Dry Skin the more conservative Nuzlocke choice in most games. Timid is generally ideal because moving first is far safer than attempting to absorb physical damage.

They make their home in deserts. They can generate their energy from basking in the sun, so eating food is not a requirement.
The frills on either side of its head have cells that generate electricity when exposed to sunlight.
When spread, the frills on its head act like solar panels, generating the power behind this Pokémon’s electric moves.
The sun powers this Pokémon’s electricity generation. Interruption of that process stresses Helioptile to the point of weakness.

Helioptile Biology and Behavior
Helioptile's expandable head frills contain cells that generate electricity when exposed to sunlight, functioning much like biological solar panels. This process allows it to thrive in desert environments without needing to eat constantly because sunlight can supply much of its energy. If its ability to generate solar electricity is interrupted, Helioptile becomes stressed and physically weakened. The species stores and uses the generated electricity for its attacks.

Helioptile Size Comparison: BETA
Helioptile is listed at 1' 8" (0.5 m) and shown in an in-chart visual comparison.

How is visual size determined?
Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.
For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.
The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
