Using Magcargo in a Playthrough
The Slugma line is a very slow special Fire family whose final evolution trades the simple defensive profile of pure Fire for the much more polarized Fire/Rock typing. Slugma evolves into Magcargo at level 38, a relatively late evolution for a Pokemon with weak unevolved stats, but Magcargo gains base 120 Defense, useful Special Attack, and access to Fire and Rock STAB alongside support such as Recover, Yawn, Will-O-Wisp, screens, or Stealth Rock depending on generation. Fire/Rock supplies several useful resistances and makes Magcargo particularly comfortable against many physical Fire-, Normal-, Flying-, Bug-, Ice-, or Poison-type attacks, but it also creates quadruple weaknesses to both Water and Ground and additional weaknesses to Fighting and Rock. Beginning in Generation VII, Magcargo received modest stat increases to HP and Special Attack, improving its ability to function as a bulky special attacker without fixing the fundamental Speed and typing problems. Flame Body can punish contact with burns and Magma Armor prevents freezing, but base 30 Speed means Magcargo usually has to survive an attack before contributing.
Magcargo in Competitive Pokémon
Magcargo has generally remained in low competitive tiers because its excellent base 120 Defense and reliable recovery are undermined by very common quadruple Water and Ground weaknesses, low HP, and terrible Speed. When the matchup is favorable, however, it can function as a specialized physical wall using Recover, Lava Plume or Will-O-Wisp, Stealth Rock, Toxic, Yawn, and Flame Body to punish contact attackers and accumulate residual damage. Its Fire/Rock typing can let it answer certain Normal-, Flying-, Fire-, Bug-, and Ice-type attackers that struggle to hit it effectively, giving Magcargo narrow but legitimate defensive niches in some lower-tier metagames. Weak Armor offers a more offensive alternative and Magma Armor blocks freezing, but neither ability is normally as broadly useful as Flame Body on defensive sets. Slugma itself has occasionally experimented with Little Cup support sets using screens, Memento, recovery, and burns, but poor bulk and base 20 Speed leave it heavily outclassed by stronger Fire-types.
Magcargo in Nuzlockes
The Slugma line is difficult to use safely in a Nuzlocke because Slugma is extremely slow and fragile before its level-38 evolution, creating a long period in which training it can require substantial protection. Magcargo becomes genuinely sturdy against physical neutral attacks and Flame Body can punish contact moves, but the quadruple Water and Ground weaknesses are severe enough that even moderate coverage can cause an immediate knockout. Its low Speed compounds that danger because it usually cannot remove a threatening opponent before taking the first hit, while its good Defense does much less against strong special Water attacks. Recover, burns, Yawn, and status support can make known favorable matchups quite safe, and Fire/Rock typing provides useful resistances when the opposing moveset is predictable. The line therefore rewards detailed opponent knowledge but is a poor blind switch-in, especially in regions where Water and Ground coverage are common.

Magcargo Biology and Behavior
Magcargo remains composed largely of molten magma, with an internal temperature described as exceeding 18,000 degrees Fahrenheit, or about 10,000 degrees Celsius—hot enough for water touching its body to evaporate immediately. Its apparent shell is actually hardened magma; despite looking massive and protective, it is surprisingly brittle and can crack easily, allowing flames circulating inside the body to escape through the fractures. Damage to the shell is not necessarily permanent because Magcargo can immerse itself in magma and reform the hardened structure. The species has occupied volcanic craters for tens of thousands of years, and folklore claims that a sudden increase in wild Magcargo can warn of an approaching volcanic eruption. Its biology therefore combines an almost impossibly hot internal body with a shell whose fragility forces Magcargo to rely on the very volcanic environments that created it for repair.

Magcargo Size Comparison: BETA
Magcargo is listed at 2' 7" (0.8 m); this chart uses a pose-adjusted visual scale.

How is visual size determined?
Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.
For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.
The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
Magcargo currently uses a pose-adjusted visual scale.
