Pansage Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage
Using Pansage in a Playthrough
Pansage evolves into Simisage with a Leaf Stone rather than by level, and in Black and White a Pansage is given at the Dreamyard if the player chose Tepig, specifically to help against the Striaton Gym matchup. Simisage has identical base 98 Attack and Special Attack plus base 101 Speed, giving it the flexibility to use physical Grass moves such as Seed Bomb, special attacks such as Giga Drain or Energy Ball, or mixed coverage including Superpower, Rock Slide, Acrobatics, Crunch, and other generation-specific options. Because evolution requires a stone, the player should check which useful level-up moves Pansage learns before evolving in games where the evolved form has a more restricted natural learnset; modern move-relearning systems reduce this concern in later titles. Gluttony causes Berries to activate at half HP rather than the usual quarter threshold, while the Hidden Ability Overgrow strengthens Grass attacks at low health. Simisage hits reasonably hard and is fast enough for much of a normal story, but 75/63/63 bulk and five common Grass weaknesses make it much safer as an attacker than as a switch-in; Hasty or Naive work for mixed sets, while Jolly and Timid support purely physical or special approaches.
Pansage in Competitive Pokémon
Simisage has spent its competitive history in lower tiers, but it is substantially more functional than its reputation sometimes suggests. Smogon places it in BW PU, where base 101 Speed and equal base 98 offenses allow mixed sets using Giga Drain, Superpower, and coverage to threaten a wide range of defensive answers, while Nasty Plot provides a faster route to special sweeping than many competing Grass-types. In SM ZU, Smogon describes Simisage as an extremely effective breaker because its expansive coverage and mixed attacking stats make switching into it difficult, even though stronger or bulkier Grass-types may be easier to fit on teams. Its main problem is defensive: 75/63/63 bulk gives it very few safe entry opportunities, and pure Grass creates five common weaknesses. Simisage therefore has a genuine niche as a fast mixed lower-tier breaker, but its frailty and competition have prevented it from establishing a sustained high-tier role.
Pansage in Nuzlockes
Pansage can be genuinely useful early in Black and White when received alongside a Tepig starter because it is intentionally placed to cover the Water-type Striaton matchup. After evolution, Simisage's base 101 Speed helps it avoid damage by attacking first, and access to both physical and special Grass offense means the player can use whichever reliable moves are available. Its defenses are mediocre and Fire, Ice, Flying, Bug, and Poison attacks are all super effective, so it should not be treated as a bulky Grass-type despite useful Water, Ground, Grass, and Electric resistances. Gluttony can cause healing or defensive Berries to activate earlier, which may occasionally save a run, but deliberately dropping into low HP for Overgrow is much riskier under permadeath rules. The safest approach is to use Simisage as a fast matchup specialist and avoid unnecessary mixed neutral exchanges.

Pansage Biology and Behavior
Pansage lives deep in forests and gathers Berries that it shares with its friends rather than keeping all of its food for itself. The leaves growing from the sprout on its head are edible and can relieve exhaustion when consumed. This makes the plant growth on Pansage's body both a personal biological feature and a resource it can provide to other creatures.

Pansage Size Comparison: BETA
Pansage is listed at 2' 0" (0.6 m) and shown in an in-chart visual comparison.

How is visual size determined?
Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.
For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.
The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
