Herdier Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage

Using Herdier in a Playthrough

Lillipup evolves into Herdier at level 16 and Stoutland at level 32, making the family one of Unova's most dependable early-route choices because it reaches strong middle and final stages at reasonable levels. In Generation V Stoutland has base 100 Attack, which was increased to 110 from Generation VI onward, alongside solid 85 HP, 90 Defense, and 90 Special Defense; Return in older games, Strength, Crunch, elemental fangs, Wild Charge, Superpower, and later Play Rough provide broad physical coverage. Intimidate is usually the safest all-purpose ability because lowering an opponent's Attack on entry creates immediate defensive value, while Sand Rush doubles Speed in sand and can transform base 80 Speed into a sweeping advantage; the Hidden Ability Scrappy lets Normal- and Fighting-type attacks hit Ghost Pokemon. Lillipup's early Pickup can also generate useful held items during a playthrough, although its ability changes when it evolves. Adamant is an excellent straightforward nature for Stoutland, while Jolly can improve matchups outside sand, and the combination of early availability, good bulk, strong Attack, and useful abilities makes this one of the better regional Normal families for ordinary play.

Herdier in Competitive Pokémon

Stoutland developed a legitimate competitive niche because Sand Rush doubles its Speed in sand, turning an otherwise middling base 80 Speed stat into elite speed control. Smogon currently classifies it in BW PU, where Choice Band plus Return, Crunch, Superpower, and coverage makes it a strong wallbreaker, while historical sand teams also used Stoutland as a revenge killer capable of outrunning even many Choice Scarf users once sand was active. In later generations its Attack rose from 100 to 110, improving the damage output of the same basic strategy, and it found additional sand niches in NU and UU when paired with setters such as Hippowdon or Gigalith. Intimidate and Scrappy offer useful alternatives, but Sand Rush is the ability that defines Stoutland's competitive identity because without sand its Speed and pure Normal typing are much less impressive. Rock- and Steel-types, Fighting priority, and dependence on a weather-setting teammate have consistently prevented it from becoming a broadly splashable upper-tier attacker.

Herdier in Nuzlockes

The Lillipup line is excellent in Nuzlockes because it is available early, evolves quickly, and becomes a genuinely bulky fully evolved Pokemon at level 32. Intimidate is particularly valuable under permadeath rules because every switch into a physical opponent immediately lowers incoming damage, while Scrappy can remove uncertainty around Ghost-type immunities in games where the Hidden Ability is available. Stoutland's 85/90/90 bulk is balanced enough to survive many neutral mistakes, and reliable Normal attacks plus Crunch and broad coverage allow it to finish battles without depending heavily on inaccurate moves or recoil. Fighting attacks remain its only conventional type weakness, and pure Normal provides no normal resistances besides the Ghost immunity, so it should not be used as an indiscriminate switch-in despite its good defenses. Adamant Stoutland with Intimidate is one of the simplest and most dependable ways to use the family in a Nuzlocke.

Herdier Biology and Behavior

Herdier's dense dark fur grows continuously and becomes springy enough to repel claws and fangs that try to penetrate it. The coat provides excellent physical protection but is expensive and difficult to groom, making proper care a significant responsibility for a Trainer. Herdier is intelligent, loyal, and willing to help humans raise other Pokemon, but it refuses to obey people who treat it without respect. Cave-wall evidence has led researchers to theorize that Herdier or its ancestors may have been among the earliest Pokemon to form enduring partnerships with humans.

How is visual size determined?

Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.

For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.

The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.

Herdier is currently tagged for large ears.
