Steelix Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage
Using Steelix in a Playthrough
Onix and Steelix have very different playthrough value despite belonging to the same evolutionary line. Onix possesses exceptional physical Defense but extremely poor Attack and HP, leaving it capable of walling some physical opponents while struggling to defeat them efficiently; Rock/Ground typing also gives it quadruple weaknesses to Water and Grass. Steelix transforms the line into Steel/Ground, retains enormous Defense, gains substantially better Attack and a large collection of resistances and immunities, making it a far more practical defensive Pokemon. The main limitation is evolution access: Onix normally requires trading while holding a Metal Coat to become Steelix, although some games provide Steelix through other encounters, so the line's value changes sharply depending on whether Steelix is obtainable during the main story.
Steelix in Competitive Pokémon
Onix itself has found specialized lower-tier and Little Cup niches through enormous physical Defense, Sturdy, Speed that is unusually high for a defensive Rock-type, and reliable Stealth Rock support, but its very low offensive stats sharply restrict what it can accomplish after hazards are established. Steelix has a much stronger competitive history as a physical wall and Stealth Rock setter, with Steel/Ground typing providing numerous resistances as well as Electric and Poison immunities. Smogon analyses repeatedly emphasize its ability to absorb physical attacks, establish hazards, and use tools such as Roar or Dragon Tail to force switches, while Earthquake and Heavy Slam provide meaningful offensive pressure. Mega Steelix further increases its already extreme physical durability and gains Sand Force, giving it a more powerful role on teams able to take advantage of sand.
Steelix in Nuzlockes
Onix is highly matchup-dependent in Nuzlockes: its enormous Defense can make certain early physical opponents almost harmless, but very low Attack and severe Water and Grass weaknesses make it a poor long-term investment if Steelix cannot be obtained. FireRed and LeafGreen community evaluations are particularly harsh because Onix arrives alongside stronger Ground and Rock alternatives, while HeartGold and SoulSilver discussions give it more credit for specific early defensive matchups but still emphasize the importance of evolving it. Steelix is considerably safer, combining exceptional physical Defense with Steel typing and useful immunities, and can act as a reliable pivot against many physical attackers. Its poor Speed and lower Special Defense mean strong special Fire-, Water-, Fighting-, or Ground-type attacks still require careful planning despite its imposing physical bulk.

Steelix Biology and Behavior
Steelix lives deeper underground than Onix and can burrow roughly six-tenths of a mile beneath the surface, with some accounts describing it digging toward the planet's core. Its jaws can chew through boulders and its eyes are adapted to seeing in complete underground darkness. Prolonged exposure to underground heat and pressure together with an iron-rich soil diet is described as making Steelix's body harder than diamond. Steelix has also been documented sleeping while standing upright, maintaining its balance even while deeply asleep.

Steelix Size Comparison: BETA
Steelix is listed at 30' 2" (9.2 m); this chart uses a pose-adjusted visual scale.

How is visual size determined?
Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.
For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.
The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
Steelix currently uses a pose-adjusted visual scale.
