Pineco Pineco Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage
Using Pineco in a Playthrough
The Pineco line develops into Forretress, a slow Bug/Steel Pokemon whose value comes from extraordinary physical Defense, numerous resistances, and utility rather than sweeping power. Pineco evolves at level 31, after which Forretress reaches base 140 Defense and gains Steel typing, leaving Fire as its only conventional weakness but making that weakness quadruple. Its base 90 Attack is usable with moves such as Gyro Ball, Payback, Earthquake, or Bug STAB depending on generation, but Forretress is usually more valuable for support through Spikes, Toxic Spikes, Stealth Rock, Rapid Spin, screens, or later Volt Switch. Its extremely low Speed can actually strengthen Gyro Ball and makes slow Volt Switch useful for bringing a teammate into battle safely after Forretress absorbs an attack. The main story limitation is poor Special Defense: Forretress can shrug off many physical hits but strong special attacks, especially Fire moves, can overwhelm it quickly.
Pineco in Competitive Pokémon
Forretress has one of the strongest historical competitive resumes among defensive Johto Pokemon because it repeatedly compressed entry-hazard setting and hazard removal into a single team slot. It was already an OU Pokemon in Generation II, where excellent Bug/Steel typing, base 140 Defense, Spikes, and Rapid Spin gave it an important role in a metagame where Spikes heavily shaped switching. Its importance continued through ADV and DPP, with DPP Forretress notable for access to Rapid Spin alongside Spikes and Toxic Spikes, while later generations added Stealth Rock, Volt Switch, and the modern form of Sturdy to expand its utility. Its weaknesses have remained equally consistent: poor Special Defense, extreme vulnerability to Fire, lack of reliable recovery, and passivity can allow dangerous setup sweepers or special attackers to exploit it. Even so, Forretress has repeatedly remained relevant because very few Pokemon can match its combination of physical bulk, hazard control, hazard stacking, and defensive typing.
Pineco in Nuzlockes
Forretress can be an excellent Nuzlocke defensive Pokemon because its enormous physical Defense and Bug/Steel typing allow it to switch safely into a wide range of predictable physical attacks. Its many resistances and Poison immunity make it especially useful for controlling physical opponents, while later Sturdy can guarantee survival from full HP against a single ordinary attack and create an emergency opportunity to retaliate, set support, or switch. The danger is its quadruple Fire weakness combined with only base 60 Special Defense, meaning even unexpected Fire coverage from a Pokemon that Forretress otherwise walls can cause an immediate loss. Pineco and Forretress are also associated with Self-Destruct and Explosion in several games, so wild encounters can themselves be dangerous, while using those moves on a trained team member is normally incompatible with preserving it in a Nuzlocke. Forretress is therefore safest when the opponent's special coverage is known and it can be used as a deliberate physical wall rather than a universal tank.

Pineco Biology and Behavior
Pineco is a patient arboreal predator that hangs almost motionless from tree branches while waiting for flying insects to approach. Its pine-cone-like shell is not simply grown as a fixed structure: Pineco spits an adhesive fluid that hardens in air and uses it to glue pieces of tree bark onto its body, steadily thickening its armor as it ages. Older individuals can therefore become unusually large and heavily armored without appearing bothered by the additional weight. The shell protects Pineco from bird Pokemon while it feeds, but disturbing the tree at the wrong moment can provoke a much more dramatic defense—Pineco may drop to the ground and explode. In Alola, Cutiefly is specifically documented as one of its favored prey species.

Pineco Size Comparison: BETA
Pineco is listed at 2' 0" (0.6 m) and shown in an in-chart visual comparison.

How is visual size determined?
Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.
For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.
The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
