Unown Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage
Using Unown in a Playthrough
Unown is one of the least practical battle Pokemon in the series because its entire conventional movepool is effectively built around a single move: Hidden Power. Its base stats are low across the board, with only base 72 Attack and Special Attack standing above an otherwise weak 48 HP, defenses, and Speed, so it neither hits especially hard nor survives reliably against stronger opponents. Historically, Hidden Power's type depends on hidden individual values or related internal data, meaning two Unown can have completely different offensive coverage while still lacking any secondary move for support, setup, recovery, or consistency. From Generation III onward Levitate at least provides a Ground immunity, and Psychic typing offers Fighting and Psychic resistances, but these defensive advantages rarely compensate for the lack of a functional movepool. Unown is therefore primarily a collection, exploration, and lore Pokemon rather than a sensible choice for progressing through difficult story battles.
Unown in Competitive Pokémon
Unown has essentially no serious competitive niche because its poor stats are compounded by one of the most restrictive movepools ever given to a Pokemon. In generations where it is usable, Hidden Power is effectively its only battle option, so an opponent knows exactly what Unown can do as soon as its Hidden Power type is revealed. Choice Specs or type-boosting items can increase its damage, and Levitate supplies a Ground immunity from Generation III onward, but many other Psychic-type special attackers possess better stats, broader coverage, recovery, utility, or all of those advantages at once. Smogon's analyses have consequently treated Unown as completely outclassed even in extremely low tiers, often recommending almost any alternative special attacker instead. Its competitive importance is therefore mostly historical curiosity: it is a Pokemon whose unique concept was intentionally never supported with the tools necessary for conventional competitive success.
Unown in Nuzlockes
Unown is a poor Nuzlocke encounter because it combines low bulk, low Speed, mediocre power, and almost no tactical flexibility. A favorable Hidden Power type can occasionally let it defeat a specific opponent, and Levitate can create a useful Ground immunity from Generation III onward, but the inability to use recovery, status, priority, setup, or alternate coverage makes every bad matchup difficult to escape without switching. Its low defenses also leave very little margin for unexpected critical hits or strong neutral attacks, which is especially dangerous in a permadeath format. The fact that different Unown can possess different Hidden Power types adds some individuality, but that variability is not enough to turn the species into a dependable team member. Unless a ruleset specifically encourages unusual or low-power Pokemon, Unown is generally safer as a boxed encounter than as an active Nuzlocke battler.

It is hard to believe these strangely shaped Pokémon are truly living creatures. I've pointed out that the species' many forms resemble writing from other lands; no one will take me seriously.

Unown Biology and Behavior
Unown is a mysterious, extremely thin Psychic Pokemon whose 28 known forms resemble the letters of the Latin alphabet plus the exclamation and question marks, yet the Pokemon world has never established whether written language was based on Unown or Unown somehow came to resemble writing. Individual Unown usually cling to walls like living inscriptions inside ancient ruins, and some accounts describe them as inhabitants of a separate dimension that rarely enter the ordinary Pokemon world. Researchers disagree over whether Unown communicate through telepathy or electromagnetic and radio-like waves, but they clearly interact with one another and an 'odd power' is said to emerge when multiple individuals gather. Large groups have demonstrated far more extraordinary effects in animation, including reading thoughts and collectively distorting reality according to the wishes or dreams of another being. Their unresolved connection to ancient writing, ruins, other dimensions, and even Arceus makes Unown one of the most deliberately unexplained species in the Pokemon setting.

Unown Size Comparison: BETA
Unown is listed at 1' 8" (0.5 m) and shown in an in-chart visual comparison.

How is visual size determined?
Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.
For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.
The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
