Swellow Swellow Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage
Using Swellow in a Playthrough
The Taillow line is one of Hoenn's earliest available Flying-type families and becomes fully evolved at level 22, giving the player access to Swellow's exceptional base 125 Speed relatively early. Swellow's base 85 Attack is only moderate, but in Generation III both Normal and Flying attacks are physical, so moves such as Return, Facade, Aerial Ace, and later stronger Flying options naturally use its better attacking stat from the beginning. Guts can turn burn, poison, or paralysis into a 50 percent Attack boost, and combining Guts with Facade can make Swellow hit far harder than its raw Attack suggests, although deliberately carrying damaging status is often unnecessary during an ordinary story. Normal/Flying provides complete immunities to Ghost and Ground and useful Grass and Bug resistances, but Swellow's 60/60/50 bulk means Electric, Ice, Rock, and even strong neutral attacks can punish it severely if it fails to move first. The line therefore plays as a classic fast attacker: early availability and excellent Speed make it consistently useful, but it depends much more on offensive momentum than on taking hits.
Swellow in Competitive Pokémon
Swellow developed a genuine competitive niche around the interaction between base 125 Speed, Guts, and powerful Normal STAB rather than around exceptional raw Attack. In ADV it sat in UUBL and could use Choice Band or status activation to make Facade and other physical attacks surprisingly threatening while outspeeding most of the metagame; Smogon notes that a Guts-boosted Swellow could pressure even physically sturdy targets with sufficient support. DPP sharpened that identity further by giving Swellow Brave Bird and reliable status-orb activation, producing the famous Guts + Facade + Brave Bird late-game cleaner that became one of UU's premier offensive threats. Later generations also experimented with Scrappy and special Boomburst sets, but the species' enduring problems are poor bulk, Stealth Rock weakness, recoil, and difficulty breaking sturdy Rock- and Steel-types without team support. Swellow's competitive success has therefore always depended on turning extreme Speed into immediate offensive pressure before its own frailty and status damage catch up with it.
Swellow in Nuzlockes
Taillow and Swellow are strong Nuzlocke encounters because they evolve early, outspeed a large portion of ordinary opponents, and provide two valuable immunities to Ghost and Ground. Moving first often lets Swellow end favorable battles without taking damage, and Guts can turn accidental status into a temporary offensive advantage rather than simply crippling the Pokemon. Deliberately burning or poisoning Swellow for a Facade strategy is much riskier in a permadeath format than in competitive play because residual damage, recoil, and route attrition can rapidly erase its already-small margin for error. Rock attacks are especially dangerous, while Electric and Ice coverage can also remove Swellow quickly because its defenses are poor. Used as a fast finisher and immunity-based switch rather than a tank, Swellow can remain useful surprisingly deep into a run.

Swellow Biology and Behavior
Swellow is an exceptionally precise aerial hunter that attacks by diving at high speed and is described as virtually never missing a chosen target once it commits to the strike. It continues the family's predation on Wurmple while ranging over warm meadows and open country in search of food. Swellow take great pride in the condition of their plumage and will carefully groom not only themselves but other Swellow, giving feather maintenance a clear social role within the species. The two long red-tipped tail feathers are considered a visible sign of health when they stand straight and even, making the tail an outward indicator of an individual's condition. Its narrow wings and powerful flight therefore serve both a hunting lifestyle and a species culture unusually concerned with maintaining clean, glossy feathers.

Swellow Size Comparison: BETA
Swellow is listed at 2' 4" (0.7 m); this chart uses a pose-adjusted visual scale.

How is visual size determined?
Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.
For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.
The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
Swellow currently uses a pose-adjusted visual scale.
