Using Mega Tatsugiri in a Playthrough
Tatsugiri is a standalone Dragon/Water special attacker found around Casseroya Lake, with base 120 Special Attack, 95 Special Defense, and 82 Speed giving it respectable immediate power despite its small size. Dragon/Water is defensively efficient, leaving only Dragon and Fairy weaknesses while resisting Steel and taking only one-quarter damage from Fire and Water before Ability effects. In an ordinary single-player battle, Commander normally does nothing because it requires an allied Dondozo in a Double Battle; the Hidden Ability Storm Drain is therefore much more generally useful, granting a Water immunity while raising Special Attack when a Water move is redirected into Tatsugiri. Nasty Plot can double its Special Attack, while Surf or Muddy Water and Dragon Pulse provide STAB; Draco Meteor offers much greater immediate Dragon damage at the cost of a two-stage Special Attack drop. The three ordinary forms have identical base stats and conventional movepools, but in doubles the form changes the extra stat Dondozo gains from successful uses of Order Up after Commander activates: Curly raises Attack, Droopy raises Defense, and Stretchy raises Speed. Mega Tatsugiri was added later in the Mega Dimension DLC for Pokémon Legends: Z-A and requires Tatsugirinite; it keeps Dragon/Water typing but rises from 475 to 575 BST, with 68/65/90/135/125/92 base stats, substantially improving its special offense, defenses, and Speed. That Mega is not part of Scarlet/Violet's normal playthrough and Z-A does not use the conventional Ability system in the same way as Scarlet/Violet, so Commander or any future standard-format Mega Ability should not be retroactively assumed to function there exactly as it does in turn-based main-series battles. Timid and Modest are the most natural Natures for ordinary offensive Tatsugiri.
Mega Tatsugiri in Competitive Pokémon
Tatsugiri has two very different competitive identities: an independent lower-tier special attacker in singles and the enabling half of the famous Dondozo Commander core in doubles. Smogon currently classifies regular Tatsugiri as SV PU, where Storm Drain, base 120 Special Attack, Nasty Plot, Draco Meteor, Surf, and Rapid Spin let it function as an offensive spinner or inexpensive special breaker despite mediocre physical bulk and only base 82 Speed. Its singles role is limited by shallow coverage and 68/60 physical bulk, but Storm Drain gives a valuable Water immunity and the threat of a free Special Attack boost. In VGC, Commander is the defining mechanic: if Tatsugiri enters while an allied Dondozo is present, Tatsugiri disappears into Dondozo's mouth and becomes unable to act or be targeted while Dondozo receives +2 stages in Attack, Defense, Special Attack, Special Defense, and Speed. The form then determines Order Up's additional boost—Attack for Curly, Defense for Droopy, or Speed for Stretchy—and if Dondozo is knocked out, Tatsugiri returns to the field and can still contribute with attacks such as Draco Meteor or Muddy Water. The partnership proved durable across the Generation IX VGC era; official 2026 EUIC discussion still described Tatsugiri switch-in mind games as a central part of playing against successful Dondozo teams. Mega Tatsugiri is now confirmed canon through Legends: Z-A's Mega Dimension DLC, with a 575 BST and significantly improved bulk and Special Attack, but it is new enough that its confirmed form mechanics should be separated from the long-established SV Commander history rather than given an invented multi-year competitive résumé.
Mega Tatsugiri in Nuzlockes
Tatsugiri has a useful Nuzlocke typing and strong special damage, but its physical frailty means it should be positioned carefully rather than treated as a general-purpose defensive Water-type. Dragon/Water leaves only Fairy and Dragon weaknesses and gives excellent Fire and Water resistance, while Storm Drain is the safest Ability when available because it converts Water attacks into complete immunities and adds a Special Attack boost. Nasty Plot can create a strong sweep in known matchups, but spending a turn setting up with only base 68 HP and 60 Defense exposes Tatsugiri to critical hits and strong neutral physical attacks. Dragon Pulse and Surf are reliable, perfectly accurate routine STAB options; Draco Meteor's 90% accuracy and sharp Special Attack drop make it better as a deliberate finishing blow than as the default attack, while Muddy Water's 85% accuracy introduces even more variance. Memento causes the user to faint and therefore directly conflicts with conventional Nuzlocke rules, while Mirror Coat is dangerous because it depends on correctly surviving and reflecting a special attack. Commander can be extraordinarily strong in Double Battles when the run also has Dondozo, but it temporarily removes Tatsugiri from direct control and locks Dondozo into the field, so the combination should still be planned around opposing Grass, Electric, Haze, Clear Smog, or other anti-setup tools. The later Mega Evolution belongs to Legends: Z-A rather than Scarlet/Violet and should be evaluated under that game's distinct battle system rather than projected into a standard SV Nuzlocke.

Mega Tatsugiri Biology and Behavior
Mega Tatsugiri consists of three enlarged Tatsugiri—one of each ordinary form—riding on a pink-and-blue dish formed from Mega Evolution energy, with the original Curly Form occupying the center and wearing a roe-like crown while the other two are copies it created. Mega Evolution further stimulates Tatsugiri's already exceptional brain, making the Curly-centered form even more cunning and allowing it to create and command those copies directly. The three bodies have lengthened dorsal structures and are separated by colored spikes that can extend during attacks. The dish and copies are manifestations of Mega Evolution rather than an ordinary Tatsugiri social group.

Mega Tatsugiri Size Comparison: BETA
Mega Tatsugiri is listed at 2' 0" (0.6 m) and shown in an in-chart visual comparison.

How is visual size determined?
Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.
For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.
The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
