Mega Magearna Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage
Using Mega Magearna in a Playthrough
Magearna is a single-stage Steel/Fairy Mythical Pokémon and is normally a special-distribution or optional acquisition rather than part of a standard first playthrough, but its 600 base-stat total and excellent typing make it immediately powerful whenever a ruleset allows it. Base 130 Special Attack, 115 Defense, and 115 Special Defense combine with Steel/Fairy's Dragon and Poison immunities, numerous resistances, and only Fire and Ground weaknesses, giving Magearna unusually safe opportunities to attack or set up. Soul-Heart raises Special Attack whenever another Pokémon faints, including opposing Pokémon and in doubles potentially other combatants, so Magearna can snowball naturally without spending a separate setup turn. Fleur Cannon provides enormous Fairy damage at the cost of a two-stage Special Attack drop, while Flash Cannon, Thunderbolt, Ice Beam, Aura Sphere or Focus Blast, Volt Switch, Shift Gear, Calm Mind, and Trick Room support very different roles across generations. Original Color Magearna is mechanically identical to the standard silver form; its red-and-gold appearance represents the paint scheme it had when first presented to royalty roughly 500 years ago. Mega Magearna, introduced in Pokémon Legends: Z-A – Mega Dimension, remains Steel/Fairy but rises to a 700 base-stat total with 170 Special Attack, 125 Attack, and 95 Speed while retaining the same defensive stats, turning the already powerful artificial Pokémon into a dramatically faster and stronger attacker. Modest is excellent for ordinary special wallbreaking, Timid supports Shift Gear or faster offensive sets, and Quiet can be useful on dedicated Trick Room teams.
Mega Magearna in Competitive Pokémon
Magearna has one of the strongest competitive histories of any Mythical Pokémon introduced in Generation VII. It was a defining Sun and Moon OU Pokémon rather than immediately being confined to Ubers, with Steel/Fairy typing, 80/115/115 bulk, base 130 Special Attack, Soul-Heart, Shift Gear, Calm Mind, Trick Room, Assault Vest, Volt Switch, and huge coverage making it exceptionally difficult to identify from team preview. Shift Gear sets could sweep offense, Assault Vest sets functioned as bulky pivots, Trick Room variants reversed the Speed problem, and Z-Moves let Magearna convert inaccurate or stat-dropping coverage into devastating one-time attacks; it also retained a niche in Ubers as a Xerneas and Yveltal check despite technically being OU. Sword and Shield pushed Magearna beyond standard OU tolerance and it was ultimately an Uber, where Steel/Fairy typing and Soul-Heart still gave it strong defensive and offensive utility. Scarlet and Violet likewise currently place Magearna in Ubers, with the combination of Stored Power, Calm Mind, Shift Gear or Trick Room-style speed manipulation, Terastallization, and Soul-Heart proving far too strong for ordinary OU play. Mega Magearna is a brand-new 2026-era development rather than an established historical competitive archetype; its 170 Special Attack and 95 Speed clearly raise the offensive ceiling, but it is too new to assign a long-term tier or tournament reputation with the same confidence as base Magearna. Historically, the defining feature of Magearna is versatility: opponents often knew it was dangerous but could not know whether the immediate problem was sweeping, pivoting, Trick Room, defensive support, or coverage until the set was revealed.
Mega Magearna in Nuzlockes
Magearna is exceptionally safe by ordinary Nuzlocke standards because Steel/Fairy provides two immunities, a large resistance profile, excellent mixed defenses, and enough offensive power to end many fights before repeated damage accumulates. Soul-Heart rewards knockouts without requiring a setup turn, allowing Magearna to grow stronger during multi-Pokémon boss battles while remaining free to attack or use support moves each turn. The main type-chart dangers are Fire and Ground, both of which are common high-power offensive types, so the enormous resistance list should not encourage blind switching into unknown Earthquake or strong Fire coverage. Fleur Cannon is powerful but lowers Special Attack by two stages, so accurate repeatable options such as Flash Cannon, Aura Sphere, or other coverage can be safer over several opponents when maximum Fairy damage is unnecessary. Shift Gear or Calm Mind can make Magearna nearly unstoppable from a controlled position, but repeated setup still exposes it to critical hits and is often unnecessary given its excellent natural stats. Mega Magearna's increased Speed and offensive power reduce the number of opponents that can attack before it, but the form does not change the underlying Fire and Ground weaknesses, so Mega Evolution should enhance safe matchups rather than justify taking poor ones.

This artificial Pokémon, constructed more than 500 years ago, can understand human speech but cannot itself speak.
Its mechanized body is merely a vessel. Its true self is its Soul-Heart, an artificial soul.
It synchronizes its consciousness with others to understand their feelings. This faculty makes it useful for taking care of people.
Built roughly 500 years ago by a scientist, the part called the Soul-Heart is the actual life-form.

Mega Magearna Biology and Behavior
Mega Evolution activates a secret mechanism that had remained hidden inside Magearna since its creation roughly 500 years ago, explicitly removing limitations built into the artificial Pokémon. The transformation restores colors associated with Magearna's original appearance and reorganizes its body, including floating half-gears that orbit independently and can combine with its flower-shaped cannon into a much larger firing mechanism. The increased performance comes at a disturbing behavioral cost: Magearna's developed emotions are locked away while the hidden mode is active, leaving it as a relentless, heartless fighting machine focused on defeating one opponent after another. Its Soul-Heart remains visually central to the transformed body, but the personality normally associated with that artificial soul is effectively suppressed by the mechanism that unlocks Mega Magearna's full combat potential.

Mega Magearna Size Comparison: BETA
Mega Magearna is listed at 4' 3" (1.3 m) and shown in an in-chart visual comparison.

How is visual size determined?
Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.
For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.
The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
