Dondozo Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage
Using Dondozo in a Playthrough
Dondozo is a standalone pure Water-type encountered in Casseroya Lake and arrives as an exceptionally durable physical tank with base 150 HP, 115 Defense, and a respectable 100 Attack. Unaware is usually its most valuable Ability because it ignores opposing stat changes when calculating damage, allowing Dondozo to stand in front of setup sweepers that would overwhelm ordinary defensive Pokémon; Oblivious prevents Taunt and Intimidate, while Water Veil prevents burns. Its enormous HP and physical Defense make it exceptionally forgiving against physical attackers, but base 65 Special Defense and base 35 Speed mean strong special Grass or Electric attacks can still remove it quickly. Liquidation is a reliable physical Water STAB, Body Press benefits from its high Defense, and Curse can simultaneously increase Attack and Defense at the cost of Speed Dondozo barely uses in the first place. Rest is its main form of full recovery and can be paired with Sleep Talk, but the forced sleep turns are much less convenient in a normal playthrough than immediate recovery moves would be. Wave Crash provides much higher Water damage but its recoil can consume Dondozo's huge HP pool rapidly, while the signature Order Up is a perfectly accurate Dragon attack whose extra stat-boosting effect matters specifically when Commander Tatsugiri is inside Dondozo during doubles. Impish is ideal for maximizing its defining physical wall role, while Careful can help patch the weaker Special Defense and Adamant can suit a more offensive Curse or doubles approach.
Dondozo in Competitive Pokémon
Dondozo has been one of Generation IX's most important defensive Pokémon in singles and one of its most distinctive team archetypes in doubles. Smogon currently classifies it as SV OU, where base 150 HP, base 115 Defense, pure Water typing, and Unaware let it answer a wide range of physical setup sweepers that would otherwise punish conventional walls. Singles sets commonly use combinations of Liquidation or Body Press, Rest, Sleep Talk, Curse, and defensive Terastallization; its greatest drawbacks are weak immediate special bulk, passivity against some special attackers, and dependence on Rest rather than conventional reliable recovery. Its doubles identity is completely different: when a Commander Tatsugiri enters its mouth, Dondozo receives +2 stages in Attack, Defense, Special Attack, Special Defense, and Speed, turning an already massive Pokémon into a self-contained offensive and defensive win condition. Order Up can then add a further Attack, Defense, or Speed boost depending on whether the swallowed Tatsugiri is Curly, Droopy, or Stretchy Form, while Tera and moves such as Wave Crash, Earthquake, Substitute, and Protect create many possible variants. The pairing remained competitively relevant for years rather than being only an early-SV gimmick; official 2026 EUIC preview coverage noted Dondozo taking second at the Birmingham Regional and Top 8 in Toronto and still emphasized the need for every serious team to have a Dondozo plan. Its longevity comes from the fact that Unaware Dondozo is already functional without Tatsugiri, while the Commander mode can force opponents to preserve very specific counterplay.
Dondozo in Nuzlockes
Dondozo is one of Paldea's safest answers to physical threats because 150 HP and 115 Defense give it an enormous physical damage buffer even before defensive investment. Unaware is particularly valuable in permadeath play because it neutralizes much of the danger from enemy Swords Dance, Dragon Dance, Bulk Up, Defense boosts, and similar stat-based snowballing when damage is calculated, greatly reducing the chance that a setup turn suddenly becomes lethal. Water Veil is also useful because burn cannot cripple Dondozo's physical Attack, while Oblivious prevents Intimidate and Taunt, but neither provides the same broad emergency protection as Unaware. The major danger is special damage: base 65 Special Defense is mediocre and Dondozo is so slow that strong Electric or Grass special attacks will usually land first. Liquidation and Body Press are safer routine attacks than Wave Crash, whose recoil can remove large amounts of health precisely because Dondozo's maximum HP is so high, and Fissure's 30% accuracy is incompatible with predictable Nuzlocke planning. Rest can fully restore health and status but creates two turns of sleep, making Sleep Talk or a carefully controlled safe matchup important if it is used during battle. In doubles, Commander Tatsugiri can make Dondozo extraordinarily powerful, but even without that specialized pairing its natural bulk and Unaware make it an excellent survival-oriented team member.

This Pokémon is a glutton, but it’s bad at getting food. It teams up with a Tatsugiri to catch prey.
It treats Tatsugiri like its boss and follows it loyally. Though powerful, Dondozo is apparently not very smart.

Dondozo Biology and Behavior
Dondozo is an enormous catfish-like Pokémon and one of the largest ordinary Pokémon species known, with enough physical strength to create great waves simply by thrashing its body. Despite that strength and a very large appetite, it is poor at catching food on its own and forms an unusually close hunting partnership with Tatsugiri: Tatsugiri acts as the strategist and lure, while Dondozo follows its commands and attacks the prey. Dondozo is loyal to Tatsugiri and protects its much smaller partner inside its mouth, effectively serving as both muscle and shelter in the relationship. Documented prey include Basculin and Flamigo. A giant Dondozo living with a giant Tatsugiri in Casseroya Lake became part of the False Dragon Titan encounter after feeding on Spicy Herba Mystica.

Dondozo Size Comparison: BETA
Dondozo is listed at 39' 4" (12.0 m) and shown in an in-chart visual comparison.

How is visual size determined?
Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.
For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.
The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
