Veluza Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage
Using Veluza in a Playthrough
Veluza is a standalone Water/Psychic Pokémon found in several Paldean bodies of water, including Casseroya Lake and the western and northern seas, and it arrives with a respectable base 102 Attack but only base 70 Speed before setup. Its defining combination is the Hidden Ability Sharpness and the signature move Fillet Away: Sharpness increases the power of slicing moves by 50%, strengthening attacks such as Aqua Cutter, Psycho Cut, and Night Slash, while Fillet Away sacrifices half of Veluza's maximum HP to raise Attack, Special Attack, and Speed by two stages each. That setup can turn Veluza into a devastating story sweeper, but it is often more power than a normal battle requires and the HP cost leaves the user vulnerable if it fails to secure immediate knockouts. Mold Breaker is a useful alternative Ability because it lets Veluza's attacks ignore many defensive Abilities, but it gives up the large and consistent Sharpness boost to its best physical moves. Water/Psychic provides resistances to Fighting, Steel, Fire, Water, Psychic, and Ice, but Veluza is weak to Bug, Ghost, Grass, Electric, and Dark and has only moderate 90/73/65 bulk. Aqua Jet can provide priority, and Recover is obtainable through its Egg Move access in Scarlet/Violet, giving a more conservative set actual longevity if the player chooses to prepare it. Adamant maximizes Sharpness-boosted physical damage, while Jolly can help before Fillet Away has supplied its Speed increase.
Veluza in Competitive Pokémon
Veluza's competitive reputation was built around how closely Fillet Away resembles an even more extreme form of Shell Smash: at the cost of half of maximum HP, it raises Attack, Special Attack, and Speed by two stages without lowering either defense. Early SV NU analysis described Sharpness Veluza as a dangerous hyper-offense sweeper, because a single setup turn made Aqua Cutter, Psycho Cut, and Night Slash dramatically stronger while doubling its middling base 70 Speed. Sharpness multiplies slicing-move power by 1.5, so the Ability increases damage without requiring another turn of setup, and Tera could further increase a favored STAB or change Veluza's defensive matchups. Despite that frightening ceiling, Veluza has fallen substantially and is currently classified as ZU in Smogon's Scarlet/Violet data. The reason is practical rather than mysterious: before Fillet Away it has only moderate Speed and power, after using the move it has voluntarily lost half its HP, and its five weaknesses plus mediocre 73/65 defenses can make finding and surviving a setup opportunity difficult. Mold Breaker can bypass defensive Abilities such as Unaware for specialized strategies, but giving up Sharpness noticeably reduces its most natural physical attacks. Veluza therefore remains capable of sweeping an unprepared team but is a good example of a Pokémon whose theoretical setup payoff is much greater than its consistency in stronger metagames.
Veluza in Nuzlockes
Veluza is much safer in a Nuzlocke when treated as a direct attacker rather than built around Fillet Away. Sharpness-boosted Aqua Cutter and Psycho Cut provide strong physical STAB without recoil, and their high critical-hit ratios can occasionally break defensive boosts without requiring Veluza to sacrifice health first. Fillet Away's +2 Attack, Special Attack, and Speed is enormous, but losing half of maximum HP before the opponent attacks creates exactly the kind of low-margin situation that permadeath play normally tries to avoid; a critical hit, priority move, or surviving target can immediately end the run for Veluza. Recover can improve long-term reliability when obtained through Scarlet/Violet's Egg Move system, and Aqua Jet supplies valuable priority for cleaning up weakened opponents. Water/Psychic gives six useful resistances, but weaknesses to Bug, Ghost, Grass, Electric, and Dark are common enough that blind setup is particularly dangerous. Mold Breaker can be preferable for a known boss whose Ability would otherwise invalidate an attack, while Sharpness is the more consistently useful choice for normal battles. Veluza can be effective, but conservative move selection and avoiding unnecessary Fillet Away gambles materially increase its chance of surviving a full Nuzlocke.

Veluza Biology and Behavior
Veluza is a predatory fish Pokémon whose internal fins and spine-like structures extend beneath a layer of disposable outer flesh. Its hunting strategy involves deliberately shedding this excess flesh, which sharpens its mind, increases its psychic power, and makes its body more agile so that it can rapidly pursue and tear into prey. The species has exceptional regenerative ability and can regrow what it discards. The shed flesh is not wasted by humans: it is described as having a mild but delicious flavor.

Veluza Size Comparison: BETA
Veluza is listed at 8' 2" (2.5 m) and shown in an in-chart visual comparison.

How is visual size determined?
Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.
For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.
The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
