Calyrex Shadow Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage
Using Calyrex Shadow in a Playthrough
Calyrex is obtained only at the end of The Crown Tundra's major storyline, so neither it nor its rider forms are normal main-campaign choices. The Reins of Unity can fuse Calyrex with Glastrier to create Ice Rider Calyrex or with Spectrier to create Shadow Rider Calyrex, and the same item can separate the partners again. Base Calyrex is Psychic/Grass with 100 HP and exactly 80 in every other base stat, making it balanced but dramatically weaker than either mounted form; it also suffers a 4× Bug weakness alongside six other weaknesses. Ice Rider becomes Psychic/Ice with 165 Attack, 150 Defense, 130 Special Defense, and only 50 Speed, turning it into an extremely slow physical juggernaut suited to Trick Room and its powerful Glacial Lance. Shadow Rider instead becomes Psychic/Ghost with 165 Special Attack and 150 Speed, making Astral Barrage one of the fastest and most immediately dangerous spread-capable Ghost attacks available. Both rider forms use As One, combining Calyrex's Unnerve with the steed's Chilling Neigh or Grim Neigh so opponents cannot consume Berries and every direct knockout can raise the relevant attacking stat. Ice Rider's Glacial Lance was 130 power in Generation VIII and was reduced to 120 in Generation IX, while Shadow Rider's Astral Barrage remains a perfectly accurate 120-power Ghost attack; both hit adjacent opponents in doubles. For postgame use, the rider forms are enormous upgrades over base Calyrex, with Ice Rider favoring bulk and Trick Room and Shadow Rider favoring immediate Speed and special offense.
Calyrex Shadow in Competitive Pokémon
Calyrex has one of the widest competitive gaps between forms in the series. Base Calyrex finished Sword/Shield in ZU and is currently ZU in Scarlet/Violet, where its mediocre 80 offenses and Speed, poor Psychic/Grass defensive profile, and shallow immediate pressure leave it largely unviable compared with stronger Psychic- or Grass-types. Ice Rider Calyrex is the opposite: it is Uber in both SS and SV, combining 165 Attack with 100/150/130 bulk, Trick Room, Swords Dance, and Glacial Lance to function as one of the strongest physical wallbreakers and sweepers in restricted formats. Its poor Psychic/Ice defensive typing and base 50 Speed create real weaknesses outside Trick Room, but Terastallization in Generation IX can dramatically improve those matchups while preserving its huge Attack and Chilling Neigh snowballing through As One. Shadow Rider Calyrex was even more influential in SS Ubers: base 165 Special Attack, base 150 Speed, Astral Barrage, As One, Trick, Nasty Plot, Substitute, and broad utility made it the single most centralizing offensive force of the tier, and it remained legal after an SS Ubers suspect test in 2022. Generation IX pushed Shadow Rider over even that exceptionally high threshold. After Pokémon HOME restored it to Scarlet/Violet, the Ubers council quickbanned it and then formally suspect-tested it; on June 12, 2023, the result had reached 42 ban votes to 3 do-not-ban votes, a 93.3% pro-ban majority, permanently sending it to Anything Goes. Shadow Rider is therefore currently AG, while Ice Rider remains Uber and base Calyrex remains ZU, an extraordinary three-tier spread for forms sharing one National Pokédex number. Both riders have also been major VGC restricted Pokémon, with Ice Rider thriving under Trick Room and Shadow Rider exploiting Astral Barrage's spread damage and exceptional Speed.
Calyrex Shadow in Nuzlockes
Calyrex normally appears only in a Crown Tundra postgame extension, and legendary clauses may exclude it, but if allowed the rider choice has major implications for permadeath safety. Base Calyrex is substantially less secure than its legendary status suggests because Psychic/Grass carries seven weaknesses including a 4× Bug weakness, while its non-HP stats are only base 80. Ice Rider offers extraordinary raw durability and Attack, making it excellent when the player can confidently survive the first hit, but base 50 Speed means it usually accepts damage before moving unless Trick Room is active. Shadow Rider takes the opposite approach: base 150 Speed often prevents damage entirely by moving first, but its Psychic/Ghost typing creates 4× weaknesses to both Dark and Ghost, so Sucker Punch and other priority deserve immediate respect. Glacial Lance and Astral Barrage are both perfectly accurate and hit extremely hard, making them safer than many legendary signature moves whose power comes with an accuracy penalty. As One can snowball a major trainer battle after the first knockout, but the player should remember that critical hits can still bypass favorable defensive calculations and that Chilling Neigh or Grim Neigh only trigger from a knockout caused directly by the rider. For strict Nuzlocke safety, Ice Rider is generally preferable when the incoming attacks are known and survivable, while Shadow Rider excels when Speed and immediate knockouts are the best defense.

Calyrex Shadow Biology and Behavior
Shadow Rider Calyrex forms when Calyrex mounts Spectrier with the Reins of Unity, restoring its full power while greatly intensifying Spectrier's spectral abilities. The combined Pokémon is swift enough to cover roughly one thousand miles in a single day, while Calyrex's psychic influence can manifest across an area said to extend about 30 miles. It creates countless small will-o'-the-wisps and rains them down like meteors, using their burning spectral energy to steal an opponent's life-force. Shadow Rider can also compress Spectrier's spectral aura into a black mass described as absorbing life-force and souls like a black hole. Legends remember Calyrex and its bonded steed racing throughout Galar to return vegetation to wastelands, linking this frightening offensive power to the same agricultural kingship associated with base Calyrex.

Calyrex Shadow Size Comparison: BETA
Calyrex Shadow is listed at 7' 10" (2.4 m) and shown in an in-chart visual comparison.

How is visual size determined?
Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.
For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.
The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
