Forms

Cramorant Gulping Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage

Using Cramorant Gulping in a Playthrough

Cramorant is a single-stage Flying/Water Pokémon obtainable during the middle portion of Sword/Shield and again in Scarlet/Violet's Kitakami content, so it can contribute for a meaningful part of either game without requiring an evolution investment. Its base stats are balanced rather than exceptional—85 in both offenses and Speed, 95 Special Defense, 70 HP, and only 55 Defense—so its unique Gulp Missile Ability is much more important to its identity than raw power. Whenever Cramorant uses Surf or Dive in its normal form, it catches prey: above half HP it enters Gulping Form with an Arrokuda, while at half HP or below it enters Gorging Form with a Pikachu. If hit while holding the prey, Cramorant spits it at the attacker for damage equal to one quarter of that opponent's maximum HP; Arrokuda also lowers Defense by one stage, whereas Pikachu can paralyze the attacker. Surf is therefore especially valuable because it combines accurate Water STAB with guaranteed activation of the Ability, while Roost, Air Slash or Drill Peck, Hurricane, Ice Beam, and Defog in appropriate generations provide recovery, secondary STAB, coverage, or hazard removal. Flying/Water grants a Ground immunity and useful resistances to Fighting, Bug, Fire, Steel, and Water but carries a severe 4× Electric weakness and a Rock weakness. Bold can compensate for its weak physical Defense on supportive sets, while Timid or Modest are reasonable for faster or stronger special offense.

Cramorant Gulping in Competitive Pokémon

Cramorant has built a genuine lower-tier utility niche around Gulp Missile despite having mediocre overall base stats. In Sword and Shield it is ZU, where Roost, Defog, Surf, and Flying STAB make it a workable hazard remover that can switch into selected Ground-, Fighting-, Fire-, and Water-type attacks. Surf is strategically central because activating Gulp Missile turns any subsequent damaging hit into 25% maximum-HP retaliation plus either a Defense drop or paralysis, allowing Cramorant to create progress even while playing defensively. Heavy-Duty Boots are especially important because a Flying-type Defogger that repeatedly switches into Stealth Rock would otherwise lose too much health to maintain Roost and Gulp Missile thresholds. Scarlet and Violet currently place Cramorant in PU, where Smogon's analysis again emphasizes Defog, Roost, Surf, and Gulp Missile as a rare combination of hazard removal, chip damage, and status pressure. Its weaknesses remain substantial: base 55 Defense is poor, Electric attacks deal 4× damage, Rock coverage is common, and its offenses are too modest to function as a conventional wallbreaker without significant support. The species has therefore remained competitively relevant not because of raw statistics but because Gulp Missile lets even a defensive turn punish the opponent in a way other hazard removers cannot reproduce.

Cramorant Gulping in Nuzlockes

Cramorant offers unusual Nuzlocke utility because Gulp Missile can guarantee meaningful retaliation after it is hit, but the Ability also encourages HP-threshold play that must be handled carefully in permadeath conditions. Above half HP, Surf produces Gulping Form and an incoming hit triggers a quarter-max-HP counterattack plus a Defense drop; at half HP or below, Gorging Form instead threatens paralysis, which can provide excellent emergency speed control. The second state is more dangerous to exploit intentionally because deliberately remaining at or below half HP leaves Cramorant much closer to a lethal critical hit or super-effective attack. Surf is preferable to Dive for most survival-focused use because it activates Gulp Missile immediately without spending a vulnerable two-turn sequence, and Roost can restore Cramorant once the Ability has done its work. Its Ground immunity and several resistances create useful switches, but the 4× Electric weakness should be treated as a hard warning and base 55 Defense means strong physical neutral attacks can still be dangerous. Because Gulp Missile retaliation is fixed at 25% of the attacker's maximum HP, Cramorant can contribute against bulky opponents even without high offensive stats, making it a strong tactical option so long as the player does not gamble recklessly with the low-HP Gorging threshold.

Cramorant Gulping Biology and Behavior

Gulping Form occurs when Cramorant catches its preferred prey, Arrokuda, and attempts to swallow the fish whole only for it to become lodged in the throat. The trapped Arrokuda struggles violently, and Cramorant uses that thrashing to help launch the fish back out at high speed when the bird is struck. Even a relatively small shock may cause Cramorant to spit the lodged prey at whatever attacked it. The form is therefore not a stable transformation of Cramorant's own body but a temporary hunting state in which unsuccessfully swallowed prey becomes an improvised projectile.

How is visual size determined?

Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.

For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.

The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
