Clamperl can evolve into Huntail by trading while holding a Deep Sea Tooth or Gorebyss by trading while holding a Deep Sea Scale.

Gorebyss Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage
Using Gorebyss in a Playthrough
Clamperl has a branching trade evolution: trading it while it holds a Deep Sea Tooth produces Huntail, while trading it with a Deep Sea Scale produces Gorebyss. That requirement can make the line inconvenient in a normal playthrough, but Clamperl itself has an unusual item interaction—the Deep Sea Tooth doubles its Special Attack and the Deep Sea Scale doubles its Special Defense while held—so even the unevolved form can perform surprisingly specialized roles. Huntail is the more physically oriented evolution with base 104 Attack and 105 Defense, while Gorebyss favors special offense with base 114 Special Attack and the same 105 Defense; in Generation III, however, Water attacks are special, so Gorebyss's main STAB fits its stats much better than Huntail's. The Generation IV physical/special split improves Huntail through physical Water moves such as Waterfall, while Generation V gives both evolutions Shell Smash, sharply raising Attack, Special Attack, and Speed at the cost of both defenses and turning either one into a dangerous setup attacker. Both remain slow before setup and are weak to Grass and Electric, so their best story role is usually to find one safe turn, boost or exploit rain, and attack aggressively rather than attempt to function as conventional bulky Water-types.
Gorebyss in Competitive Pokémon
Huntail and Gorebyss spent their early competitive lives as niche rain sweepers, but Generation V's addition of Shell Smash gave the entire family a much more distinctive identity. Gorebyss became the stronger special Shell Smash sweeper thanks to base 114 Special Attack, Swift Swim, Surf or Hydro Pump, Ice Beam, and coverage, while Huntail used base 104 Attack, physical Water STAB, and later Sucker Punch to approach the same strategy from the physical side. Both also gained notoriety from combining Shell Smash with Baton Pass, allowing a single setup turn to transfer enormous Attack, Special Attack, and Speed boosts to another teammate; that strategy became powerful enough to face restrictions or bans in several Smogon formats. Gorebyss generally received more competitive attention because its higher Special Attack made it better able to threaten opponents itself rather than functioning only as a passer, while Huntail has frequently been described as the more situational choice. Low base 52 Speed before boosting, merely average special bulk, common Electric and Grass weaknesses, and competition from stronger Shell Smash users keep both evolutions out of high tiers, but the family retains one of the series' clearest setup-and-pass identities.
Gorebyss in Nuzlockes
The Clamperl family can be difficult to plan around in a Nuzlocke because reaching either final form traditionally requires both the correct held item and a trade, which may be impossible under a solo-cartridge or no-trade ruleset. If the evolution is available, Huntail and Gorebyss both offer good physical Defense and simple pure Water typing, leaving only Grass and Electric as ordinary weaknesses. Gorebyss is generally the safer immediate special attacker, while Huntail becomes more attractive once physical Water STAB is available; Shell Smash can let either one sweep but also lowers both defenses, which is a serious permadeath risk if the opponent survives. Swift Swim can provide much safer speed control in rain without sacrificing defenses, while Huntail's Water Veil prevents burns and Gorebyss's Hydration can cure status during rain in generations where those abilities are available. The line is strongest when evolution access and opposing coverage are known in advance; otherwise, the trade requirement and setup-dependent Speed make it less dependable than more straightforward Water families.

Gorebyss Biology and Behavior
Gorebyss looks graceful while swimming through the deep southern seas, but its feeding behavior is remarkably predatory: the long needle-like mouth is driven into prey and used to drain the victim's body fluids. The discarded remains sink to the seafloor and become food for other Pokemon, giving Gorebyss's hunting a direct role in moving nutrients down into the deep-sea ecosystem. It is not exclusively carnivorous and also feeds on seaweed growing between rocks, making the species capable of switching between plant material and animal prey. Its pink coloration changes with water temperature and becomes noticeably more vivid after feeding and during spring, with Alolan individuals described as almost blindingly bright. Like Huntail, Gorebyss possesses a body capable of surviving enormous deep-water pressure, but evolution has produced a very different hunting strategy centered on precision feeding rather than swallowing prey whole.

Gorebyss Size Comparison: BETA
Gorebyss is listed at 5' 11" (1.8 m); this chart uses a pose-adjusted visual scale.

How is visual size determined?
Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.
For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.
The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
Gorebyss currently uses a pose-adjusted visual scale.
