Relicanth Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage

Using Relicanth in a Playthrough

Relicanth is a single-stage Water/Rock Pokemon with excellent physical durability: base 100 HP and 130 Defense allow it to absorb many Normal-, Flying-, Fire-, and other physical attacks comfortably, while base 90 Attack gives Rock and Ground moves respectable power. Its Special Defense is only base 65 and Special Attack only 45, so the huge physical bulk should not be mistaken for all-purpose tanking; Electric, Fighting, and Ground attacks are dangerous, and Grass deals quadruple damage. Rock Head is particularly useful because it eliminates recoil from moves such as Double-Edge and, in later generations, Head Smash, letting Relicanth use extremely powerful physical attacks without damaging itself, while Swift Swim can double its Speed in rain. Generation III suits its offense reasonably well because Rock attacks are physical and use its stronger Attack even though Water attacks are special and comparatively weak from Relicanth itself. In the Hoenn games Relicanth also has unique progression value beyond combat: it is one of the Pokemon required in the Sealed Chamber party puzzle that unlocks access to Regirock, Regice, and Registeel, making an otherwise optional deep-sea encounter essential for that legendary sidequest.

Relicanth in Competitive Pokémon

Relicanth was one of ADV NU's strongest Rock-types, with Smogon highlighting its enormous physical bulk, respectable Attack, and useful choice between Rock Head and Swift Swim. Defensive sets could check many Normal- and Flying-type attackers while using Rock Slide, Earthquake, Toxic, Rest, or Sleep Talk, whereas Choice Band sets turned Relicanth into a bulky physical attacker that did not immediately surrender defensive utility. Later access to Head Smash gave Rock Head an ideal partner: a 150-power Rock STAB attack could be used without recoil, making Relicanth far more threatening than base 90 Attack alone would imply. Swift Swim provides a separate rain-sweeper role by doubling its otherwise poor base 55 Speed, though the low Special Defense and severe Grass weakness make setup and positioning important. Relicanth has remained a lower-tier specialist as stronger Water/Rock Pokemon and faster attackers appeared, but its combination of physical bulk and recoil-free high-power Rock offense has given it a consistent competitive identity.

Relicanth in Nuzlockes

Relicanth can be very safe in a Nuzlocke against known physical opponents because 100 HP and base 130 Defense create one of Hoenn's strongest physical cushions. Rock Head is also unusually Nuzlocke-friendly because recoil moves can be used without slowly damaging the user, while Head Smash in later games becomes a massive attack without its usual self-inflicted cost. The danger is special coverage: base 65 Special Defense is much weaker than the physical side, and Grass attacks deal quadruple damage while Electric, Fighting, and Ground are also super effective. Swift Swim can improve safety in rain by allowing Relicanth to move first, but rain simultaneously strengthens opposing Water attacks, so the weather should not be treated as universally beneficial. In Hoenn, catching and preserving a Relicanth also has strategic value even outside battle because the Regi sidequest requires it for the Sealed Chamber puzzle.

It was fortuitously discovered during a deep sea expedition. Its teeth have atrophied, so it now survives on microscopic organisms it sucks up.

Ultra Sun

Thought to have gone extinct, Relicanth was given a name that is a variation of the name of the person who discovered it.

Ultra Moon

The reason it hasn’t changed at all in a hundred million years is that it’s apparently already a perfect life-form.

Sword

Rock-hard scales and oil-filled swim bladders allow this Pokémon to survive the intense water pressure of the deep sea.

This Pokémon was discovered during deep-sea exploration. Its appearance hasn’t changed in 100,000,000 years, so it’s called a living fossil.

Relicanth Biology and Behavior

Relicanth is an ancient deep-sea fish whose body plan has remained essentially unchanged for roughly 100 million years, leading researchers to describe it as a living fossil and even an already 'perfect' life-form for its environment. Its rough stone-like scales, fatty body, and oil-filled swim bladders allow it to tolerate the crushing pressure of extreme ocean depths. Although its ancestors possessed teeth, those structures have atrophied completely; modern Relicanth are toothless filter feeders that suck microscopic organisms from the surrounding water rather than hunting larger prey. Two pairs of pectoral fins help it crawl or push itself along the seafloor, preserving a mode of movement that has apparently required almost no evolutionary modification over geological time. The species was believed extinct until discovered during a deep-sea expedition, making its survival one of the Pokemon world's clearest examples of a lineage persisting virtually unchanged while ecosystems around it transformed.

How is visual size determined?

Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.

For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.

The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
