Grookey Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage
Using Grookey in a Playthrough
Grookey evolves into Thwackey at level 16 and Rillaboom at level 35, giving the line a normal starter progression and allowing its final stage to contribute through a large portion of both Sword/Shield and any later game in which the family is obtained early enough. Rillaboom is a bulky physical Grass-type with base 125 Attack, 100 HP, and 90 Defense; Drum Beating provides accurate Grass STAB while lowering the target's Speed, and stronger options such as Wood Hammer trade substantially more damage for recoil. Its Hidden Ability Grassy Surge is transformative: entering battle automatically creates Grassy Terrain, boosting grounded Grass attacks, restoring grounded Pokémon each turn, and weakening Earthquake, Bulldoze, and Magnitude, while Grassy Glide gains priority under the terrain. That combination makes Rillaboom much more useful than a typical slowish Grass attacker, although the Hidden Ability is not guaranteed on an ordinary starter and therefore should not be assumed in every playthrough. Pure Grass leaves weaknesses to Bug, Fire, Flying, Ice, and Poison, but useful Water, Ground, Electric, and Grass resistances plus terrain recovery give Rillaboom good staying power against favorable opponents. In Sword/Shield, a compatible Rillaboom can gain the Gigantamax Factor through Max Soup in the Isle of Armor; Gigantamax Rillaboom's G-Max Drum Solo provides exceptionally powerful Grass damage during Dynamax but is available only within Generation VIII's Dynamax rules. Adamant is excellent for maximizing Rillaboom's physical damage, while Jolly is genuinely useful when preserving base 85 Speed against nearby offensive benchmarks matters.
Grookey in Competitive Pokémon
Rillaboom became one of the defining offensive Grass-types of Generation VIII after Grassy Surge and Grassy Glide were released, and Smogon classifies it as OU in both Sword/Shield and Scarlet/Violet. In Sword/Shield OU, terrain-boosted Grassy Glide had 70 base power and priority, letting Rillaboom revenge kill faster attackers while Choice Band or Swords Dance sets also threatened defensive teams with Wood Hammer, Knock Off, Superpower or Drain Punch, and U-turn. Grassy Terrain made the Pokémon valuable beyond its own damage by healing grounded teammates and weakening Earthquake, which created strong defensive synergy with partners such as Heatran, Melmetal, and Galarian Slowking. It also became a major doubles and VGC support Pokémon because Fake Out, Grassy Surge, Grassy Glide, Wood Hammer, and U-turn combine terrain control, priority, disruption, damage, and pivoting in one slot. Scarlet and Violet reduced Grassy Glide to 55 base power, but Rillaboom remains OU and a premier wallbreaker, revenge killer, and terrain setter; Knock Off and U-turn continue to make conventional Grass-resistant switch-ins pay a long-term cost. Its recurring limitations are the many common Grass resistances, vulnerability to Fire-, Flying-, Ice-, Poison-, and Bug-type attacks, and dependence on contact or recoil-heavy moves for maximum damage. Rillaboom's history is therefore not simply that of a strong starter: Grassy Surge fundamentally changed its role into one of the most important terrain-based offensive and support Pokémon of Generations VIII and IX.
Grookey in Nuzlockes
The Grookey line is a dependable Nuzlocke starter because it evolves at ordinary levels, has good physical bulk, and gains strong reliable Grass damage without requiring unusual items or trade mechanics. Rillaboom's base 100 HP and 90 Defense give it more margin for an incorrect physical damage estimate than many offensive starters, while Water and Ground resistance creates especially useful switch opportunities in ordinary play. If Grassy Surge is legitimately available, passive terrain recovery improves long-term survival and the reduction to Earthquake, Bulldoze, and Magnitude damage can protect both Rillaboom and grounded teammates from some of the most dangerous physical attacks in the series. Grassy Glide is an excellent permadeath tool under terrain because priority can remove a weakened faster threat before it attacks, while Drum Beating is accurate and can lower an opponent's Speed without requiring a separate support turn. Wood Hammer is considerably riskier because recoil can erase the health advantage gained from Grassy Terrain, and Superpower or similar self-debuffing coverage can leave Rillaboom vulnerable after a knockout. Its five weaknesses are common enough that blind switching remains dangerous, especially against Fire, Flying, and Ice coverage, so the safest use is as a bulky attacker that exploits known resistances rather than as a universal tank.

Grookey Biology and Behavior
Grookey carries a wooden stick taken from a branch in the forest where its troop lived; exposure to the energy inside Grookey makes the stick harder and more flexible than an ordinary twig. When Grookey rhythmically beats the stick against surrounding objects, the released energy can stimulate plants, causing grass to grow and wilted leaves or flowers to regain their color; animation has even shown the effect revitalizing weakened plantlike Pokémon. Its green fur can create energy from sunlight in a photosynthesis-like process, connecting the line's musical behavior directly to plant energy rather than making the Grass typing purely decorative. Grookey is extremely curious, enjoys music and dancing, and likes climbing to high places. The species has also been established in Blueberry Academy's Terarium outside its native Galar.

Grookey Size Comparison: BETA
Grookey is listed at 1' 0" (0.3 m); this chart uses a pose-adjusted visual scale.

How is visual size determined?
Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.
For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.
The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
Grookey currently uses a pose-adjusted visual scale.
