Grubbin Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage
Using Grubbin in a Playthrough
Grubbin is an early-game Bug-type in Alola and evolves into Charjabug at level 20, so the line can contribute for most of a playthrough rather than arriving only near the end. Charjabug gains the useful Bug/Electric typing and respectable physical bulk, but its low Speed and modest Special Attack make it feel more like a durable transitional stage than the finished attacker; its Battery Ability is primarily valuable in doubles because it boosts an ally's special moves rather than Charjabug's own attacks. The largest issue in the original Sun and Moon is evolution timing: Charjabug must level up in Vast Poni Canyon's special magnetic field, delaying Vikavolt until very late, whereas Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon add the much earlier Blush Mountain as another valid magnetic field. From Generation VIII onward a Thunder Stone can evolve Charjabug, removing that major pacing problem in games where the line is available. Vikavolt is extremely slow at base 43 Speed but compensates with enormous base 145 Special Attack, Levitate, only two normal type weaknesses in Fire and Rock, and strong special STAB such as Thunderbolt or Discharge and Bug Buzz; Energy Ball and Volt Switch can add coverage and momentum where available. Modest is generally the most straightforward beneficial Nature for ordinary use because Vikavolt rarely wins important Speed races anyway, while Quiet is sensible on deliberately slow or Trick Room-oriented teams.
Grubbin in Competitive Pokémon
Vikavolt has spent most of its singles history in the lower usage tiers, but it has repeatedly earned real niches rather than functioning as a generic low-tier attacker. In Generation VII it was classified as NU while also receiving RU and VGC 2017 analyses: its base 145 Special Attack made it a dangerous wallbreaker, while Bug/Electric typing plus Levitate let it exploit matchups against several Grass-, Fighting-, Steel-, and Ground-reliant Pokémon. Its very low Speed could actually be useful on pivoting sets because a slow Volt Switch often brought a teammate onto the field without that teammate taking the opponent's attack, although Vikavolt itself had to be able to absorb the hit. In VGC 2017, the combination of Levitate, strong special damage, respectable bulk, and Electroweb gave it a distinct speed-control role, even though it was never one of the format's defining stars. Later generations expanded its identity through Sticky Web, letting it operate as a bulky hazard setter as well as a wallbreaker; in Scarlet and Violet it is currently listed in ZU, where Smogon describes it as a powerful Sticky Web setter and tank that pressures opposing removal with its STAB and coverage. Its recurring limitations are the same across eras—base 43 Speed, vulnerability to Rock hazards before Heavy-Duty Boots became available, and competition from faster Electric-types—but its exceptional Special Attack and Levitate have kept it from being wholly outclassed.
Grubbin in Nuzlockes
This line is most dependable in a Nuzlocke when treated as a slow, sturdy attacker rather than something expected to sweep without taking damage. Grubbin is available early in Alola, but the long period spent as Charjabug can be awkward in Sun and Moon because Vikavolt is locked behind the late-game magnetic field; Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon substantially improve the line by permitting evolution at Blush Mountain, and Thunder Stone evolution in later games is safer still. Charjabug's good Defense can make it surprisingly resilient to physical neutral hits, and Eviolite can improve that role further when available, but its low Speed means critical hits and unexpected coverage must always be respected. Vikavolt's Levitate creates a valuable Ground immunity, and its Electric, Fighting, Grass, and Steel resistances give it several comparatively safe switch opportunities, while reliable attacks such as Thunderbolt and Bug Buzz avoid the unnecessary variance of inaccurate alternatives. Its biggest Nuzlocke liability is base 43 Speed: even when it can score a knockout, it often has to survive an attack first, so blind switching against an unknown moveset is risky. A slow Volt Switch can be excellent for bringing a frailer teammate in safely after Vikavolt absorbs a hit, but that tactic should be reserved for matchups where Vikavolt's bulk and typing make the incoming damage predictable.

Its strong jaw enables it to scrape trees and slurp out the sap. It normally lives underground.
They often gather near places frequented by electric Pokémon in order to avoid being attacked by bird Pokémon.
If you find its nest, you shouldn’t stick your hand inside. You’ll get bitten by an irritated Grubbin.
It spits a sticky thread to stop opponents in their tracks, and then it grabs them in its sharp, sturdy mandibles to take them down.
Its natural enemies, like Rookidee, may flee rather than risk getting caught in its large mandibles that can snap thick tree branches.
It uses its big jaws to dig nests into the forest floor, and it loves to feed on sweet tree sap.

Grubbin Biology and Behavior
Grubbin normally lives underground, where its oversized mandibles serve as weapons, digging tools, and implements for scraping trees to obtain sap. It can fire sticky threads from its mouth to swing from surfaces or immobilize prey and opponents before seizing them with jaws strong enough to snap thick branches. Bird Pokémon such as Rookidee and Hoothoot are natural enemies, yet they may avoid confronting it because being trapped by those mandibles is dangerous. Grubbin is attracted to electricity and may live near power plants or Electric-type Pokémon; gathering around Electric Pokémon also helps discourage attacks from bird-like predators. It constructs nests underground with its mandibles and has been observed sleeping buried in dirt.

Grubbin Size Comparison: BETA
Grubbin is listed at 1' 4" (0.4 m); this chart uses a pose-adjusted visual scale.

How is visual size determined?
Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.
For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.
The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
Grubbin currently uses a pose-adjusted visual scale.
