Maractus Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage
Using Maractus in a Playthrough
Maractus is a single-stage pure Grass Pokemon with base 106 Special Attack, 86 Attack, and only base 60 Speed, so it is better suited to deliberate offense or support than fast sweeping without weather. Giga Drain and Energy Ball provide reliable special STAB, while Spikes, Leech Seed, Synthesis, Sunny Day, Cotton Guard, Sucker Punch, and other utility can let it contribute beyond direct damage. Water Absorb grants a complete Water immunity and restores one-quarter of maximum HP when activated, Chlorophyll doubles Speed in harsh sunlight, and the Hidden Ability Storm Drain also creates a Water immunity while raising Special Attack when hit by Water moves. In Generation V sun teams, Chlorophyll can turn Maractus's poor natural Speed into a genuine advantage and strengthen Solar Beam-based offense, though its shallow special coverage remains a major limitation. Modest is the simplest offensive nature, while Calm can support a defensive Spikes role. Fire, Ice, Flying, Bug, and Poison attacks are all super effective, so Maractus should usually enter through its Water immunity or a resisted Ground or Grass move rather than neutral damage.
Maractus in Competitive Pokémon
Maractus has never been a high-tier competitive Pokemon, but it has had a real niche in weather and hazard support. BW NU sun teams used Chlorophyll to bring its base 60 Speed to useful levels, allowing Maractus to set Spikes quickly while threatening opponents with base 106 Special Attack and sun-enabled Solar Beam. Water Absorb or Storm Drain can instead let it function as a Water-type switch-in, with Storm Drain providing a Special Attack boost and later sets adding Knock Off, Synthesis, and Giga Drain to a defensive-support toolkit. Smogon's SS analysis still treats Maractus as a niche Spikes setter because its typing, mediocre 75/67/67 bulk, and limited coverage leave it outclassed by sturdier Grass-types such as Roselia. Its competitive value therefore comes from unusual role combinations—Water immunity, Spikes, and strong Grass offense—rather than raw overall efficiency.
Maractus in Nuzlockes
Maractus can fill a useful Nuzlocke niche if it has Water Absorb or Storm Drain, because either ability provides a complete Water immunity and can create extremely safe switches against known Water attacks. Giga Drain and Synthesis can restore health, while Spikes provides teamwide value without requiring Maractus to defeat every opponent itself. The drawback is defensive consistency: base 75 HP with only 67 in both defenses is not enough to absorb strong neutral hits comfortably, and Fire, Ice, Flying, Bug, and Poison moves all hit super effectively. Chlorophyll can make Maractus very fast in sun but does nothing to solve those weaknesses if the opponent survives. Modest or Calm are both reasonable, and accurate Giga Drain is usually preferable to riskier or more situational high-power options when the damage is already sufficient.

Maractus Biology and Behavior
Maractus lives in arid desert regions and moves its cactus-like body rhythmically, producing rattling sounds similar to maracas. It combines those sounds with upbeat dances to scare away bird Pokemon that try to eat its flower seeds. Once each year, Maractus scatters nutrient-rich seeds across the desert, providing an important seasonal food source for other desert Pokemon.

Maractus Size Comparison: BETA
Maractus is listed at 3' 3" (1.0 m); this chart uses a pose-adjusted visual scale.

How is visual size determined?
Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.
For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.
The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
Maractus currently uses a pose-adjusted visual scale.
