Evolution Chain

Poipole evolves into Naganadel by leveling up knowing Dragon Pulse.

Poipole Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage

Using Poipole in a Playthrough

Poipole is an unusual Ultra Beast because it genuinely evolves: it becomes Naganadel when it levels up while knowing Dragon Pulse, with no fixed minimum evolution level beyond satisfying that move requirement. In Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, Poipole is received late in the story, so the evolution can occur quickly if Dragon Pulse is taught or relearned; Sword and Shield's Crown Tundra likewise provides Poipole only through late optional content, keeping the family out of ordinary early-game team building. Naganadel gains Dragon typing and jumps to base 127 Special Attack and 121 Speed, turning a relatively modest first stage into a very fast special sweeper with excellent Poison/Dragon STAB. Sludge Wave or Sludge Bomb handles Fairy-types that would normally block Dragon attacks, Draco Meteor supplies enormous burst damage, and Flamethrower or Fire Blast covers most Steel-types that resist both STAB types. Beast Boost is especially dangerous on Naganadel because a Timid build can be arranged so that Speed becomes the boosted stat after a knockout, making revenge killing increasingly difficult, while Special Attack-boosting variants instead snowball raw damage. Nasty Plot can make Naganadel overwhelming after one safe turn but its 73/73/73 defenses leave little margin for setup mistakes, so Timid is the most broadly useful Nature while Modest is reasonable when external speed control is already available.

Poipole in Competitive Pokémon

Naganadel made one of the most explosive competitive debuts of Generation VII: shortly after Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon released, it proved so difficult to answer in OU that the council quickbanned it to Ubers after roughly a week. The defining set combined Nasty Plot, Draco Meteor, Sludge Wave, Fire Blast, Dragonium Z, and Beast Boost, with Poison/Dragon STAB plus Fire coverage leaving only a small number of reliable defensive answers and a Speed-boosting Beast Boost making ordinary revenge killing extremely difficult. Its short OU stay is historically important because the ban was not based on overwhelming bulk or an enormous base-stat total; instead, base 127 Special Attack, 121 Speed, nearly complete offensive coverage, and post-knockout snowballing compressed too much offensive pressure into one slot. In Generation VII Ubers it remained usable as an anti-stall and hyper-offense sweeper, but its mediocre bulk and competition from much stronger restricted Pokémon made successful setup considerably harder than it had been in OU. Sword and Shield kept Naganadel in Ubers, where Nasty Plot and Life Orb still created a dangerous cleaner and Beast Boost could again raise Speed after a knockout, but threats such as Calyrex-Shadow, Choice Scarf users, priority, and Eternatus limited its consistency. Naganadel therefore has the unusual historical distinction of being unequivocally too strong for standard OU while never becoming a dominant Ubers staple, illustrating how a Pokémon can sit awkwardly between metagames. It is unavailable in standard Scarlet and Violet, so its established main-series tier history currently ends with Generation VIII Ubers.

Poipole in Nuzlockes

Poipole's late acquisition means a Nuzlocke rarely has to protect the weaker first stage for very long, but the player must know the Dragon Pulse evolution requirement or risk carrying Poipole substantially longer than necessary. Once evolved, Naganadel is safest when its base 121 Speed and powerful special attacks prevent opponents from moving at all, because 73/73/73 defenses provide little room for an incorrect damage estimate. Poison/Dragon gives useful resistances to Bug, Electric, Fighting, Fire, Poison, Water, and a 4× resistance to Grass, but Ground, Psychic, Ice, and Dragon coverage can be lethal when Naganadel fails to secure the first knockout. Sludge Wave and Flamethrower are accurate and dependable, while Draco Meteor's 90% accuracy and two-stage Special Attack drop make it better as an emergency burst option than as the only plan for multiple consecutive opponents. Nasty Plot is extremely powerful but should be used only against an enemy that cannot meaningfully punish the setup turn; in many Nuzlocke situations Naganadel already has enough natural Special Attack to avoid taking that risk. A successful Beast Boost can turn one safe knockout into a sweep, but priority attacks remain especially dangerous because they bypass the Speed advantage that normally keeps this very frail Ultra Beast alive.

Poipole Biology and Behavior

Poipole originates from Ultra Megalopolis in the core games and is notable for being popular there as a first partner Pokémon, making it one of the clearest examples of an Ultra Beast filling an ordinary companion role in its home culture. Its oversized head is filled with a luminous, highly adhesive poison that it can spray from several needles projecting from the head. Poipole can learn to understand human speech after spending enough time around people, indicating a level of social adaptability unusual among the more alien Ultra Beasts. Animated portrayals show Poipole living socially, expressing strong curiosity, and using its colorful venom to make drawings or markings rather than employing the substance only as a weapon. Like other Ultra Beasts, it stores the same kind of Z-Power associated with Alola's Totem Pokémon within its body.

How is visual size determined?

Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.

For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.

The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.

Poipole currently uses a pose-adjusted visual scale.
