Using Eternatus in a Playthrough
Eternatus is encountered during Sword and Shield's climax before the Champion battle, making it extraordinarily late but still technically available for the final major story fight once it is caught. Its Poison/Dragon typing, base 140 HP, 145 Special Attack, and 130 Speed give it immediate legendary-level performance, while 95 Defense and Special Defense are strong enough that its huge HP pool makes both sides genuinely durable. Dynamax Cannon is a perfectly accurate 100-power Dragon move and in Generation VIII doubles in power against Dynamaxed targets, while Sludge Bomb or Sludge Wave provides Poison STAB and Flamethrower or Fire Blast punishes Steel-types. Recover gives Eternatus reliable healing, and options such as Toxic Spikes, Cosmic Power, or other utility let it function as much more than a fast attacker. Pressure increases the opponent's PP consumption when targeting Eternatus, which can matter in long defensive battles even though most normal story encounters end before PP pressure becomes decisive. Eternatus cannot Dynamax despite being the source of Galar's Dynamax phenomenon; instead, the story-only Eternamax transformation represents its overloaded state and is not a form the player can freely use. If legendary Pokémon are allowed, Eternatus is one of the strongest late-game additions possible because it combines speed, bulk, recovery, and special damage without requiring an item or setup turn to become effective.
Eternatus in Competitive Pokémon
Eternatus has been a defining Ubers Pokémon in both Sword/Shield and Scarlet/Violet. In SS Ubers it was considered one of the tier's 'big three' threats and appeared on an enormous share of serious teams because Poison/Dragon typing, base 140 HP, Recover, Pressure, and base 130 Speed let it check major threats while remaining dangerous offensively. Defensive sets absorbed Toxic Spikes, checked Pokémon such as Kyogre and Yveltal depending on the build, and used Toxic, Recover, and Pressure to exhaust opposing resources; offensive sets exploited 145 Special Attack with Dynamax Cannon, Sludge Bomb, Flamethrower, and Meteor Beam or similar coverage. Unlike nearly every other Sword/Shield Pokémon, Eternatus could not Dynamax, but it did not need that mechanic to remain central because its natural statistics and recovery were already exceptional. Scarlet/Violet still classifies Eternatus as Uber, and current Smogon analysis treats it as a premier special attacker that can also serve as one of the tier's most important Kyogre and Ho-Oh checks while absorbing Toxic Spikes. Life Orb or other offensive sets use Dynamax Cannon, Sludge Bomb, Fire Blast, and Recover, while bulkier structures exploit Pressure and status; Terastallization can patch weaknesses or increase offensive pressure even though the native Poison/Dragon typing is already valuable. Its principal modern problems are powerful Ground- and Dragon-type attackers such as Arceus-Ground, Koraidon, or Miraidon, and Steel-types that can exploit sets lacking Fire coverage. Eternamax Eternatus has no ordinary competitive tiering history because it is not a player-selectable battle form; its enormous boss statistics should not be conflated with standard Eternatus's legitimate Ubers record.
Eternatus in Nuzlockes
Eternatus is an extraordinarily safe Nuzlocke encounter if the ruleset allows legendaries, although it arrives so late that it affects only the end of Sword and Shield's main story and any postgame continuation. Its 140 HP and balanced 95 defenses provide enormous raw survivability, while base 130 Speed means it usually attacks before ordinary opponents and base 145 Special Attack makes clean knockouts common. Dynamax Cannon and Sludge Bomb are both perfectly accurate, and Flamethrower offers safer Fire coverage than Fire Blast when the extra power is unnecessary. Recover is one of its greatest permadeath advantages because it allows Eternatus to restore health without relying exclusively on consumable items, while Pressure can help in unusually long fights. Ground, Psychic, Ice, and Dragon attacks are the main super-effective threats, and powerful physical Ground attackers deserve particular caution because Eternatus's Defense, while good, is not remotely comparable with its huge HP and offensive stats. Cosmic Power can make Eternatus even harder to remove, but setting up is often unnecessary and still exposes it to critical hits or status. Eternamax is encountered only as a scripted boss state rather than a usable team member, so Nuzlocke evaluation should be based on the normal form the player actually catches.

The core on its chest absorbs energy emanating from the lands of the Galar region. This energy is what allows Eternatus to stay active.
It was inside a meteorite that fell 20,000 years ago. There seems to be a connection between this Pokémon and the Dynamax phenomenon.

Eternatus Biology and Behavior
Eternatus is an extraterrestrial Legendary that crash-landed in Galar inside a giant asteroid roughly 20,000 years before the events of Sword and Shield. Its chest contains an energy core that absorbs enormous quantities of power, especially Galar particles, and this relationship makes Eternatus the underlying source of the region's Dynamax phenomenon. Around 3,000 years ago it awakened and triggered the original Darkest Day, forcing Pokémon across Galar to Dynamax and rampage until Zacian and Zamazenta defeated it and sent it back into dormancy. Eternatus can both force other Pokémon to Dynamax by supplying Galar particles and prevent Dynamaxing by absorbing those particles away from them. Later animated and manga portrayals complicate its reputation as a purely malicious monster: its catastrophic effects can result from an inability to control its immense power, and after gaining greater control it has even acted as a protector of Galar.

Eternatus Size Comparison: BETA
Eternatus is listed at 65' 7" (20.0 m) and shown in an in-chart visual comparison.

How is visual size determined?
Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.
For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.
The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
