Ho Oh Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage
Using Ho Oh in a Playthrough
Ho-Oh is a powerful Fire/Flying legendary that combines base 130 Attack, 110 Special Attack, 154 Special Defense, and 106 HP, allowing it to function as both an offensive threat and a remarkably sturdy special tank. Its signature Sacred Fire is especially valuable from Generation IV onward as a physical Fire attack that matches Ho-Oh's stronger Attack and carries an unusually high chance to burn the target, while Brave Bird provides extremely powerful Flying STAB. Fire/Flying typing supplies a Ground immunity and useful resistances to Fire, Fighting, Grass, Bug, Steel, and later Fairy, but the same typing creates a severe quadruple Rock weakness alongside Water and Electric weaknesses. Recover gives Ho-Oh direct staying power, and in games where its Hidden Ability is available, Regenerator restores health whenever it switches out, making repeated hit-and-run play unusually sustainable. As with Lugia, story usefulness varies by version: Ho-Oh is a major pre-Elite Four legendary in Gold and HeartGold but appears much later or under different conditions in other Johto games.
Ho Oh in Competitive Pokémon
Ho-Oh has been a major Ubers Pokemon since Generation II, combining enormous Special Defense, strong offensive stats, reliable recovery, and a defensive typing that lets it check numerous powerful special and Steel-type threats. Its most defining attack is Sacred Fire, whose combination of high base power and a 50 percent burn chance makes switching into Ho-Oh dangerous even for many Pokemon that resist Fire, because a burn can cripple physical attackers for the rest of the game. Later generations gave it Regenerator, allowing Ho-Oh to recover one third of its maximum HP whenever it switches out and transforming it into one of Ubers' most persistent offensive-defensive pivots. Brave Bird, Recover, Toxic, Earthquake, Defog, and Choice Band or bulky sets have allowed it to function as a wallbreaker, special tank, status spreader, or hazard-removal Pokemon depending on the metagame. Its historic structural weakness is the quadruple vulnerability to Rock, especially Stealth Rock, although Heavy-Duty Boots in Generation VIII removed much of that entry-hazard penalty and helped Ho-Oh become an even more reliable defensive cornerstone.
Ho Oh in Nuzlockes
Ho-Oh is an exceptionally strong Nuzlocke Pokemon if major legendaries are permitted because high HP, extraordinary Special Defense, strong Attack, recovery, and multiple resistances give it both offensive pressure and substantial survivability. Sacred Fire is particularly attractive because a successful burn can sharply reduce incoming physical damage while Ho-Oh continues attacking, although the burn chance should never be treated as guaranteed in a permadeath run. The quadruple Rock weakness is the major danger and can make unexpected Rock Slide, Stone Edge, or similar coverage lethal despite Ho-Oh's legendary bulk; Water and Electric attacks also require respect. Regenerator provides outstanding long-term safety when legitimately available, while Recover alone is already enough to make many favorable boss matchups much less resource-intensive. As with Lugia, the real restrictions are usually availability and ruleset choice rather than strength, since some Johto versions provide Ho-Oh during the story while many Nuzlocke rules exclude box legendaries.

Ho Oh Biology and Behavior
Ho-Oh is a vast phoenix-like Pokemon whose prismatic wings produce brilliant rainbows as it flies, and legends claim that anyone fortunate enough to witness it is promised lasting or even eternal happiness. Its feathers change through seven colors depending on the angle of the light and have themselves become sacred objects associated with joy, while Ho-Oh is said to reveal itself only to pure-hearted Trainers and to live somewhere at the foot of a rainbow. The species possesses one of the most extraordinary powers attributed to any Pokemon: after the Brass Tower burned roughly 150 years before the Johto games, Ho-Oh descended and resurrected three Pokemon that had died in the fire, creating the beings later known as Raikou, Entei, and Suicune. Ho-Oh once used the great towers of Johto as perches and remains closely tied to Ecruteak City's Bell Tower, where ritual bells, one of its feathers, and the dance of the Kimono Girls can call it back. Its Sacred Fire is described as a mystical flame of tremendous destructive intensity, yet Ho-Oh is remembered culturally less as a creature of destruction than as a guardian of the skies and a symbol of resurrection, happiness, and divine favor. Stories claiming that it continuously circles the world's skies on its seven-colored wings reinforce the idea that encounters with Ho-Oh are rare moments of revelation rather than ordinary wildlife sightings.

Ho Oh Size Comparison: BETA
Ho Oh is listed at 12' 6" (3.8 m); this chart uses a pose-adjusted visual scale.

How is visual size determined?
Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.
For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.
The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
Ho Oh currently uses a pose-adjusted visual scale.
