Archen Archen Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage
Using Archen in a Playthrough
Archen evolves into Archeops at level 37, producing one of the most offensively gifted Fossil Pokemon in the series: base 140 Attack, 112 Special Attack, and 110 Speed. Rock/Flying STAB through Acrobatics, Rock Slide or Stone Edge, and later options such as Dual Wingbeat combines with Earthquake, Crunch, U-turn, Heat Wave, Dragon Claw, and Roost to support physical or mixed offense. The enormous drawback is Defeatist, which halves both Attack and Special Attack whenever Archeops is at half of its maximum HP or lower, so maintaining health is far more important for this family than for most sweepers. Rock/Flying also creates weaknesses to Water, Electric, Ice, Rock, and Steel, while base 65 Defense and Special Defense mean Archeops can fall into Defeatist range after only one strong neutral hit. Jolly is usually ideal because preserving base 110 Speed helps prevent damage entirely, while Naive or Hasty can support mixed coverage. In a normal playthrough Archeops is extraordinarily strong when healthy, but much less forgiving than its raw offensive stats suggest.
Archen in Competitive Pokémon
Archeops was a major offensive threat in BW RU and retained a legitimate UU niche despite Defeatist. Its 140 Attack, 112 Special Attack, and 110 Speed let it use Flying Gem Acrobatics, Stone Edge, Earthquake, Head Smash, U-turn, and special coverage to pressure nearly every conventional switch-in, and Smogon described it as an offensive juggernaut when properly supported. Defeatist is the entire reason those near-legendary offensive stats did not push Archeops into much higher tiers: once it falls to half HP or below, both attacking stats are cut in half, and a Stealth Rock weakness makes repeated switching particularly punishing. Roost can sometimes restore Archeops above the threshold, while U-turn preserves momentum but risks additional hazard damage later. Later generations continued to use Archeops as a fast lower-tier attacker or occasional suicide lead, but the ability has consistently prevented it from converting elite raw stats into elite long-term tier placement.
Archen in Nuzlockes
Archeops can be devastating in a Nuzlocke because base 110 Speed and 140 Attack often allow it to eliminate dangerous opponents before they act. The central safety rule is to keep it above half HP: once Defeatist activates, both offenses are halved and a fight that looked like a clean one-hit knockout can suddenly become a dangerous two-turn exchange. Its Ground immunity and resistances to Normal, Fire, Flying, Bug, and Poison provide planned switch opportunities, but five weaknesses and mediocre defenses mean blind switching is risky. Head Smash is especially dangerous under permadeath rules because recoil can activate Defeatist or simply remove too much HP, while Rock Slide or other accurate non-recoil options are usually safer when they already secure the knockout. Jolly Archeops is best used as a healthy fast attacker rather than a Pokemon expected to absorb damage and continue sweeping afterward.

It is the ancestor of all bird Pokémon. Archen itself could not actually fly but moved by hopping from treetop to treetop.
To all appearances flightless, it was able to glide down from tall treetops to snag its prey.
Once thought to be the ancestor of all bird Pokémon, some of the latest research suggests that may not be the case.

Archen Biology and Behavior
Archen is an extinct feathered reptile revived from fossils. It was once widely believed to be the ancestor of all bird Pokemon, although later research has cast doubt on that conclusion. Its wings are too weak for true flight, so it lives in trees, hops between branches, and glides to seize prey. Animated portrayals also show Archen preferring certain naturally grown Berries over ordinary prepared Pokemon food.

Archen Size Comparison: BETA
Archen is listed at 1' 8" (0.5 m) and shown in an in-chart visual comparison.

How is visual size determined?
Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.
For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.
The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
