Ariados Ariados Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage
Using Ariados in a Playthrough
The Spinarak line is an early Bug/Poison family whose value comes more from useful resistances, status, and utility than from speed or overwhelming damage. Spinarak evolves into Ariados at level 22, giving the player a fully evolved Pokemon fairly early, and Ariados's base 90 Attack is respectable enough to make physical Bug- and Poison-type moves useful when good options are available. Its biggest limitation is base 40 Speed, which forces Ariados to take hits before acting against many opponents; its merely average bulk means that this can become increasingly dangerous later in a playthrough. Later generations improve the line substantially with stronger attacks and utility such as Megahorn, Poison Jab, Sucker Punch, Leech Life, Toxic Spikes, Sticky Web, and the signature Toxic Thread, while Insomnia can provide a useful immunity to sleep. Ariados is therefore most effective as a slow physical attacker or support Pokemon used selectively against Grass-, Fighting-, Bug-, Poison-, and, from Generation VI onward, Fairy-type opponents rather than as a general-purpose sweeper.
Ariados in Competitive Pokémon
Ariados has spent most of competitive Pokemon in the lowest tiers, but it has accumulated several unusual utility niches over the generations. In Generation II, Spider Web combined with Baton Pass gave it a rare trapping strategy: Ariados could prevent an opponent from switching and then pass the trapping effect to a teammate better equipped to exploit the matchup. Later generations shifted its identity toward entry-hazard support, particularly because it can learn both Sticky Web and Toxic Spikes, while Toxic Thread can simultaneously poison an opponent and reduce its Speed. The problem has always been execution—base 40 Speed leaves Ariados extremely vulnerable to faster Taunt users and offensive pressure, while its ordinary defenses provide little opportunity to recover after setting hazards. As a result, Ariados has genuine utility on paper but is usually outclassed by faster or bulkier hazard setters that can perform the same jobs more consistently.
Ariados in Nuzlockes
The Spinarak line can be a useful but highly matchup-dependent Nuzlocke encounter, particularly in games where Spinarak is available early enough for Ariados's level-22 evolution to matter. Bug/Poison typing provides excellent resistances to Grass and Fighting and useful resistances to several other types, while Insomnia can create safe switches into predictable sleep moves when that ability is available. Ariados's poor Speed is the main source of risk: it frequently has to absorb an attack before responding, and weaknesses to Fire, Flying, Psychic, and Rock make unexpected coverage potentially fatal. Status, priority such as Sucker Punch in applicable generations, and later hazard support can still let it contribute without winning every battle through direct damage. It is safest when brought into opponents whose moves are already known rather than being used as a blind switch-in against neutral attackers.

Ariados Biology and Behavior
Ariados is a nocturnal forest predator capable of producing strong silk from both its mouth and its rear spinneret, making it difficult at a glance to determine which end of its body produced a strand. Tiny hooks on its feet let it climb vertical walls and ceilings, while a continuous thread spun behind it can serve as a trail leading back to its nest as it wanders through the forest after dark. Captured prey may be wrapped in silk and bitten before Ariados slowly drinks its bodily fluids, but it sometimes uses a more elaborate strategy: attaching a thread to captured prey, releasing it, and later following the strand back to that animal and its companions. Humans in some regions weave Ariados silk into cloth valued for its exceptional strength. Unlike the stationary web-hunting behavior associated with Spinarak, Ariados is also described as an active nighttime hunter that leaves its web and aggressively searches for food.

Ariados Size Comparison: BETA
Ariados is listed at 3' 7" (1.1 m) and shown in an in-chart visual comparison.

How is visual size determined?
Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.
For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.
The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
