Chimchar Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage
Using Chimchar in a Playthrough
The Chimchar line is one of Sinnoh's strongest offensive starter choices, evolving into Fire/Fighting Monferno at level 14 and Infernape at level 36. Infernape's base 104 Attack, 104 Special Attack, and 108 Speed let it use physical, special, or mixed moves effectively, while Fire/Fighting STAB hits a broad range of common story opponents and its movepool includes options such as Close Combat, Flamethrower, Flare Blitz, Mach Punch, Grass Knot, U-turn, Stone Edge, and setup depending on the game. It is especially valuable in Diamond and Pearl because alternative Fire-types are unusually scarce before the postgame, making Chimchar capable of filling a team role that is much harder to replace than the Water or Grass starter slots. Blaze can turn low-health Fire attacks into emergency finishing moves, while the later Hidden Ability Iron Fist strengthens moves such as Mach Punch and Thunder Punch, though neither ability compensates for only average defenses. Infernape is at its best when it uses Speed to avoid damage rather than trying to absorb hits, and Jolly, Naive, Hasty, Timid, or Modest can all make sense depending on whether a particular playthrough set is physical, mixed, or special.
Chimchar in Competitive Pokémon
Infernape was one of DPP OU's defining offensive Pokemon because its 104/104 attacking stats, base 108 Speed, Fire/Fighting STAB, and enormous movepool made its set difficult to identify from team preview alone. It could function as a mixed wallbreaker, Swords Dance or Nasty Plot sweeper, Choice attacker, lead, or pivot using combinations of Close Combat, Fire Blast or Flare Blitz, U-turn, Grass Knot, Hidden Power Ice, Stone Edge, priority, Taunt, and Stealth Rock. Infernape remained OU in BW, although stronger competition and a harsher offensive environment reduced how dominant it felt, and it later became a premier UU attacker in generations such as XY and SM. Its greatest strength has consistently been versatility rather than raw statistics: very few defensive Pokemon can cover every plausible Infernape set without first knowing which side of the attacking spectrum it is using. Its long-term limitation is fragility—76/71/71 bulk and common Water, Ground, Psychic, and Flying weaknesses mean that a failed prediction often costs most or all of its health—and modern power creep has eventually pushed it to substantially lower tiers.
Chimchar in Nuzlockes
The Chimchar line is excellent in Nuzlockes when offense can be used to prevent opponents from moving, because Monferno evolves early and Infernape's base 108 Speed lets it outspeed a large portion of ordinary story teams. Its broad coverage also reduces the need to leave it in against unfavorable targets, and Mach Punch provides especially useful priority for finishing weakened enemies without taking another hit. The problem is margin for error: its defenses are merely average, so unexpected Water, Ground, Psychic, or Flying coverage can produce immediate deaths that bulkier starters might survive. Close Combat is powerful but lowers both defenses, while Flare Blitz recoil and deliberate Blaze activation are much more dangerous in permadeath play than in ordinary or competitive battles. The safest use of Infernape is therefore to exploit known Speed advantages, switch it in through resistances or after a knockout, and favor clean one-hit or two-hit routes rather than treating its offensive power as permission to stay in at low health.

Chimchar Biology and Behavior
Chimchar produces flammable gas in its stomach and vents it from a patch on its rear, creating the characteristic tail flame. Rain normally cannot extinguish this fire, but Chimchar deliberately puts it out before sleeping, and the flame burns weakly when the Pokemon is ill, making it another species whose external fire reveals its physical condition. Its agility allows it to scale steep rocky cliffs in mountainous habitats. In ancient Hisui, people sometimes mistook the glowing tail for a supernatural apparition and called Chimchar the 'Lantern-Tail,' giving an ordinary biological adaptation a place in regional folklore.

Chimchar Size Comparison: BETA
Chimchar is listed at 1' 8" (0.5 m); this chart uses a pose-adjusted visual scale.

How is visual size determined?
Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.
For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.
The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
Chimchar currently uses a pose-adjusted visual scale.
