Cleffa Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage
Using Cleffa in a Playthrough
The Cleffa line ultimately produces Clefable, a versatile Pokemon whose primary playthrough strength is its exceptionally broad movepool rather than overwhelming raw stats. Clefable can make use of many offensive, recovery, status, and setup moves, allowing it to cover several roles or patch gaps in a team; in games with Calm Mind, it can combine setup with special coverage particularly effectively. From Generation VI onward, Fairy typing greatly improves its offensive and defensive matchups by giving it strong utility against Dragon-, Fighting-, and Dark-types, while earlier versions function as pure Normal-types. Cleffa itself is much less convenient because it requires friendship to evolve and has poor battle stats, so the line is generally most useful when Clefairy can be obtained directly or evolved quickly. In Red, Blue, and Yellow Version, Clefable is an often overlooked moon stone evolution. The Moon Stone is available in Mt. Moon where Clefairy is found, so it evolves right away. This provides a huge power spike that early trainers have a hard time competing with. It's early availability means it provides value for the whole run. The Clefable line has a very deep TM movepool so it's great at filling gaps in your team.
Cleffa in Competitive Pokémon
Clefable has one of the strongest competitive histories among early-generation Pokemon because its abilities and movepool allow it to perform a wide range of defensive, support, and setup roles. Magic Guard prevents most forms of indirect damage, allowing Clefable to ignore hazards, poison, burn damage, and other passive wear, while Unaware sets can instead neutralize opponents that rely on stat boosts. Depending on the generation and team, Clefable can use Stealth Rock, Knock Off, Thunder Wave, Wish, recovery, Calm Mind, and powerful Fairy STAB to function as a wall, utility Pokemon, or win condition. Magic Guard already gave Clefable a significant niche before it became Fairy-type, while the Generation VI typing change substantially improved its defensive profile and helped establish it as a consistently important higher-level competitive Pokemon.
Cleffa in Nuzlockes
Clefable can be extremely useful in a Nuzlocke when obtained because its broad movepool allows it to adapt to the specific holes left by encounters or deaths elsewhere on the team. In FireRed and LeafGreen, community analysis highlights Calm Mind combined with coverage such as Thunderbolt and Ice Beam as a potent option, with Clefable's special bulk and recovery giving it opportunities to set up and survive longer fights. Its disadvantages are availability and resource cost: Clefairy can be a rare encounter, Cleffa requires friendship in games where it is the starting stage, and Clefable often wants valuable TMs that could be used elsewhere. From Generation VI onward, Fairy typing adds valuable Dragon immunity and Fighting and Dark resistances, further increasing its defensive safety in games where the line is obtainable.

Cleffa Biology and Behavior
Cleffa lives in mountainous areas and is particularly associated with meteor impact sites. Sightings increase during nights filled with shooting stars, when groups of Cleffa have been observed dancing through the night before drinking morning dew. It is strongly attracted to objects resembling stars or meteors, including Pokemon such as Minior. Its star-shaped body and association with meteor sites have led people to believe it arrived on a shooting star, while animated material has depicted the wider evolutionary family as extraterrestrial.

Cleffa Size Comparison: BETA
Cleffa is listed at 1' 0" (0.3 m); this chart uses a pose-adjusted visual scale.

How is visual size determined?
Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.
For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.
The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
Cleffa currently uses a pose-adjusted visual scale.
