Cobalion Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage

Using Cobalion in a Playthrough

Cobalion is a single-stage Steel/Fighting Legendary with base 129 Defense and 108 Speed, but only base 90 in both attacking stats and 72 Special Defense. Its unusual combination of speed, physical bulk, and typing supports several approaches: Close Combat or Sacred Sword, Iron Head, Volt Switch, Stealth Rock, Swords Dance, Calm Mind, and special coverage such as Flash Cannon can all be useful depending on generation and set. Justified raises Attack by one stage whenever Cobalion is hit by a Dark-type move, which combines well with its natural Dark resistance. Steel/Fighting gives a Poison immunity and many resistances, but Fire, Fighting, and Ground attacks are super effective and strong special attacks can exploit the lower Special Defense. Sacred Sword is safer than Close Combat when the extra power is not required because it does not lower Cobalion's defenses and also ignores the target's defensive stat boosts. Jolly is ideal for physical sets, while Timid can support Calm Mind or special utility.

Cobalion in Competitive Pokémon

Cobalion was a strong BW UU Pokemon whose niche came from role compression rather than overwhelming raw offense. Base 129 Defense and 108 Speed are unusually strong together, while Steel/Fighting typing provides many resistances, a Poison immunity, and a strong matchup into several common Dark-, Rock-, Normal-, and Steel-type threats. Swords Dance, Calm Mind, Stealth Rock, Volt Switch, Taunt, and dual STAB let it function as a sweeper, pivot, or utility setter depending on team needs. That versatility remained relevant in later generations; by SM UU, Smogon described Cobalion as one of the tier's premier threats because it could check major physical attackers while still providing Stealth Rock or offensive setup. Its mediocre base 90 offenses mean it often needs a boost or super-effective hit to break bulky targets, while the low Special Defense makes strong special Fire-, Ground-, or Fighting-type attacks a major problem.

Cobalion in Nuzlockes

Cobalion is very reliable in Nuzlockes because base 129 Defense, high Speed, and a large resistance profile make physical damage much easier to manage than with most Fighting-types. Its Poison immunity and resistance to Dark also provide safe switch opportunities, and Justified can turn a predicted Dark move into an Attack boost. The main danger is the base 72 Special Defense: a strong special Fire, Ground, or Fighting attack can do far more damage than the physical bulk suggests. Sacred Sword is particularly Nuzlocke-friendly because it is accurate, ignores opposing Defense boosts, and does not lower Cobalion's own defenses the way Close Combat does. Jolly or Timid are both useful because moving first allows Cobalion to exploit its excellent base 108 Speed rather than relying only on bulk.

Cobalion Biology and Behavior

Cobalion is the calm, commanding leader of the Swords of Justice and is said to possess a heart and body like steel. According to Unovan legend, it joined Terrakion and Virizion in fighting humans after warfare set a forest ablaze and threatened the Pokemon living there. During that crisis, Cobalion directed frightened Pokemon to safety and coordinated the group's resistance. Its presence is so commanding that even unruly Pokemon can be made to obey by its glare.

How is visual size determined?

Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.

For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.

The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.

Cobalion currently uses a pose-adjusted visual scale.
