Dratini Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage
Using Dratini in a Playthrough
The Dratini line has an exceptionally high final ceiling but one of the slowest payoffs among ordinary story Pokemon. Dratini evolves into Dragonair at level 30 and Dragonair does not become Dragonite until level 55, often near or after the end of a main story; until then the line's stats and movepool can feel modest relative to the experience required. Dragonite is a 600-base-stat mixed powerhouse with excellent Attack, strong bulk, broad coverage, and setup such as Dragon Dance, while Multiscale in later generations can halve damage taken from full HP. If the player is willing to invest the levels, Dragonite can fill almost any offensive role. Pokemon Legends: Z-A also introduced Mega Dragonite, giving Dragonite an additional temporary power increase in games that support Mega Evolution.
Dratini in Competitive Pokémon
Dragonite has remained competitively relevant through the combination of strong Attack, broad coverage, Dragon Dance, priority such as Extreme Speed, and useful defensive typing. Multiscale dramatically improved its setup reliability by halving damage while Dragonite is at full health, frequently allowing it to survive a hit and begin boosting. Choice, bulky utility, and mixed sets have also existed because its movepool is unusually broad. Entry hazards and Ice-type attacks, particularly its quadruple Ice weakness, are the main recurring pressures on standard Dragonite. Mega Dragonite is now an official form, but its cross-format competitive history is still much newer than standard Dragonite's, so the established Dragon Dance and Multiscale roles remain the most durable historical baseline.
Dratini in Nuzlockes
Dragonite is extraordinarily strong once obtained but the level-55 evolution requirement is a major Nuzlocke opportunity cost. Dratini and Dragonair require substantial experience while remaining much less powerful than the final form, which can force the player either to carry a weaker team member for a long period or grind heavily. If Dragonite is reached before the relevant endgame, its bulk, Attack, coverage, and later Multiscale access can make it one of the safest offensive Pokemon available. Ice coverage remains a potentially fatal exception because of the quadruple weakness.

It’s still weak, so it lurks on the floor of bodies of water, eating whatever food sinks down and living a quiet life.
It sheds its skin—almost on a daily basis—and grows larger. Its skin is soft just after it’s been shed.

Dratini dwells near bodies of rapidly flowing water, such as the plunge pools of waterfalls. As it grows, Dratini will shed its skin many times.
This Pokémon was long considered to be no more than a myth. The small lump on a Dratini’s forehead is actually a horn that’s still coming in.

Dratini Biology and Behavior
Dratini continually accumulates life energy and grows throughout its life, periodically shedding its skin as its body expands. While the newly exposed skin is soft, it hides in protected areas such as behind waterfalls until it hardens. Its rarity and secluded habitat historically caused the species to be treated as almost mythical. Even young Dratini can exceed six feet in length, making the supposedly elusive "Mirage Pokemon" surprisingly large from an early age. Its discarded skins are valuable enough to be tanned and made into luxury boots, giving the species' constant shedding an unusual connection to human material culture.

Dratini Size Comparison: BETA
Dratini is listed at 5' 11" (1.8 m); this chart uses a pose-adjusted visual scale.

How is visual size determined?
Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.
For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.
The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
Dratini currently uses a pose-adjusted visual scale.
