Using Finizen in a Playthrough
Finizen evolves into Palafin starting at level 38 only when it levels up while the player is connected with another player through a Union Circle, making this family's evolution unusually dependent on multiplayer access. Once evolved, Palafin initially appears underwhelming because Zero Form has only base 70 Attack, but its signature Zero to Hero Ability transforms it into Hero Form after it switches out without fainting; Hero Form jumps to base 160 Attack with much stronger defenses while retaining base 100 Speed. Flip Turn is especially convenient because it can deal damage while activating the required switch, allowing Palafin to return later in Hero Form without wasting as much momentum. Hero Palafin's signature Jet Punch is a perfectly accurate 60-base-power priority Water attack, while Wave Crash provides enormous direct damage and Bulk Up can turn it into a powerful setup sweeper. Pure Water typing gives only Grass and Electric weaknesses, and Hero Form's 100/97/87 defenses make it far sturdier than its Zero Form presentation suggests. Terastallization can amplify Water damage or alter defensive matchups, though the line is already extremely powerful without depending on Tera. Adamant is excellent for maximizing Jet Punch and wallbreaking damage, while Jolly can matter when Palafin must outspeed other base-100 or nearby Speed threats before priority is relevant.
Finizen in Competitive Pokémon
Palafin produced one of the fastest major tiering reactions of early Scarlet/Violet because Zero to Hero effectively turns an ordinary-looking base form into a Pokémon with base 160 Attack, base 100 Speed, strong bulk, and exceptional Water attacks after a single switch. Smogon's SV OU council quickbanned Palafin on November 25, 2022, only a week after the generation began, and the current SV Strategy Pokédex still classifies it as Uber. Choice Band sets use Wave Crash for overwhelming wallbreaking and Jet Punch for unusually strong priority, while Bulk Up variants can exploit Hero Form's improved defenses and use coverage such as Close Combat or Ice Punch. Flip Turn naturally satisfies Zero to Hero's switching requirement while maintaining momentum, so the Ability's activation cost is much smaller in practice than it first appears. Palafin is less dominant in Ubers than it was in OU because Pokémon such as Koraidon and Miraidon reshape Water matchups and the overall power level is much higher, but it still has a clear niche as a physical breaker and revenge killer. As of 2026, Smogon's Pokémon Champions Pokédex also lists Palafin as Uber, showing that its defining stat transformation and priority remain powerful under the newer competitive ruleset.
Finizen in Nuzlockes
Palafin has exceptional Nuzlocke potential, but obtaining it is conditional: Finizen must reach at least level 38 and level up while connected through Union Circle, so runs without multiplayer access may be unable to evolve it at all. After evolution, the player must still activate Zero to Hero by switching Palafin out without fainting, making safe positioning on its first appearance important; Flip Turn is ideal because it combines the switch with damage. Once Hero Form is active, base 160 Attack, improved 100/97/87 bulk, and priority Jet Punch create an excellent survival profile because many opponents can be removed before they are allowed to attack. Wave Crash is immensely powerful but its recoil is a significant permadeath hazard, and Close Combat's Defense and Special Defense drops can make the following turn unsafe, so Liquidation, Jet Punch, Drain Punch, or other lower-risk options may be preferable when their damage is sufficient. Pure Water typing keeps the weakness list short, but strong Electric and Grass attacks remain serious threats and Zero Form should not be left exposed simply because Hero Form is durable. If the multiplayer evolution requirement is satisfied and recoil is managed conservatively, Palafin is one of the strongest ordinary non-legendary Nuzlocke assets available in Paldea.

Finizen Biology and Behavior
Finizen produces the water ring around its tail from seawater mixed with a sticky fluid secreted through its blowhole. It is notably social, playing with others of its own species by using the tail ring. Finizen also emits ultrasonic waves that allow it to sense the emotions of other living creatures, giving the species a well-defined sensory ability beyond ordinary echolocation-like behavior.

Finizen Size Comparison: BETA
Finizen is listed at 4' 3" (1.3 m) and shown in an in-chart visual comparison.

How is visual size determined?
Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.
For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.
The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
