Hariyama Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage
Using Hariyama in a Playthrough
Makuhita evolves into Hariyama at level 24, giving Hoenn players relatively early access to a Fighting-type with enormous base 144 HP and 120 Attack. Fighting attacks are physical in Generation III and therefore align perfectly with Hariyama's strongest offensive stat from its debut, making moves such as Brick Break, Vital Throw, Cross Chop, Focus Punch, or later Close Combat immediately threatening to Normal-, Rock-, Dark-, Ice-, and Steel-type opponents. Thick Fat effectively reduces incoming Fire- and Ice-type damage and can create useful defensive matchups, while Guts raises Attack when Hariyama is statused and prevents burn from ruining its physical offense. Its HP pool is huge, but base 60 Defense and Special Defense mean the bulk comes more from raw health than from actually resisting every hit, and base 50 Speed leaves it taking damage before attacking in many battles. Hariyama works best as a slow, powerful bruiser that enters favorable matchups, absorbs a hit with its enormous HP, and retaliates rather than attempting to sweep by Speed.
Hariyama in Competitive Pokémon
Hariyama had a meaningful niche from its debut and was placed in ADV UUBL, with Smogon identifying it as the premier Knock Off user in ADV OU because it could remove Leftovers while still threatening opponents with genuine Fighting-type offense. Base 144 HP gives it exceptional raw bulk, base 120 Attack makes Focus Punch, Cross Chop, or Brick Break difficult to ignore, and its two primary abilities support very different roles: Guts lets it absorb status and become stronger, while Thick Fat improves matchups against Fire- and Ice-based coverage. Knock Off was especially important in ADV because removing Leftovers made sand and Spikes damage much harder for opposing defensive Pokemon to recover from, allowing Hariyama to force progress even when it was not scoring direct knockouts. Later generations continued to use it as a bulky Fighting-type wallbreaker or tank, with Fake Out, Bullet Punch, Close Combat, Heavy Slam, and other coverage providing additional utility. Its low Speed, mediocre actual defensive stats, lack of reliable instant recovery, and weaknesses to Flying, Psychic, and later Fairy keep it from dominating, but Hariyama's combination of huge HP, power, and useful abilities has given it far more competitive substance than a simple slow Fighting-type.
Hariyama in Nuzlockes
Makuhita is a strong Hoenn Nuzlocke encounter because it can be obtained in Granite Cave and evolves at level 24 into a Pokemon with one of the largest HP stats available during the main story. Hariyama's powerful Fighting STAB can shorten dangerous fights against Normal-, Rock-, Dark-, Ice-, and Steel-type opponents, while Thick Fat or Guts can turn common Fire, Ice, or status-based matchups in its favor depending on the individual. Its enormous HP is forgiving, but the base 60 defenses and low Speed mean Hariyama often absorbs a full-strength attack before responding, so strong Psychic or Flying attacks can still be lethal despite the impressive health bar. Guts is useful if status occurs naturally, but deliberately inflicting burn or poison should be weighed against residual damage between battles in a permadeath format. Hariyama is safest when used as a powerful tank against known favorable targets rather than as a universal answer to every physical attacker.

It is known for its fantastic strength, but as it grows older, it focuses more on training Makuhita.
They love to compare their freakish strength— strength enough to send a truck flying with a single slap.
Although they enjoy comparing their strength, they’re also kind. They value etiquette, praising opponents they battle.
Hariyama that are big and fat aren’t necessarily strong. There are some small ones that move nimbly and use moves skillfully.

Hariyama Biology and Behavior
Hariyama's enormous body looks fat but consists largely of dense muscle, and when it deliberately tenses those muscles the body can become as hard as stone. Its open-handed strikes possess extraordinary force: Pokedex accounts describe Hariyama snapping telephone poles, sending ten-ton trucks flying, and even standing on railroad tracks to stop moving trains with its forearms. The species actively seeks tests of strength against other large-bodied Pokemon and builds power by stomping the ground before striking. Despite that intimidating competitive instinct, Hariyama are described as kind and highly concerned with etiquette, openly praising opponents after a good battle rather than treating strength as an excuse for cruelty. Older individuals gradually shift away from proving their own strength and devote more time to training younger Makuhita, giving the species a clear mentoring role as it ages.

Hariyama Size Comparison: BETA
Hariyama is listed at 7' 7" (2.3 m); this chart uses a pose-adjusted visual scale.

How is visual size determined?
Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.
For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.
The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
Hariyama currently uses a pose-adjusted visual scale.
