Inkay Inkay Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage
Using Inkay in a Playthrough
Inkay evolves into Malamar starting at level 30 through the family's unusual inversion-based evolution method, traditionally requiring the game system to be turned upside down as the level is gained; the exact hardware implementation varies by game. Standard Malamar is Dark/Psychic with base 92 Attack, 88 Defense, 86 HP, and 73 Speed. Contrary is the defining ability because it reverses stat changes: Superpower normally lowers Attack and Defense, but on Contrary Malamar each use instead raises both stats by one stage while dealing 120-base-power Fighting damage. Knock Off, Psycho Cut, Rest, Sleep Talk, Topsy-Turvy, Hypnosis, and coverage provide offense or utility, while Suction Cups prevents forced switching and the Hidden Ability Infiltrator bypasses Substitute and several protective screen effects. Dark/Psychic has a Psychic immunity but no ordinary resistances, a Fairy weakness, and a quadruple Bug weakness. Mega Malamar keeps Dark/Psychic typing, reaches base 102 Attack, 98 Special Attack, 120 Special Defense, and 88 Speed, and retains Contrary as its Mega Ability. Careful is excellent for standard RestTalk sets, while Mega Malamar can justify Careful, Adamant, or more offensively oriented natures depending on the role.
Inkay in Competitive Pokémon
Standard Malamar established a distinctive XY and ORAS lower-tier niche through Contrary plus Superpower. In XY NU, repeatedly using Superpower simultaneously dealt strong Fighting damage and raised Malamar's Attack and Defense, allowing bulky RestTalk sets to become progressively harder to stop while Knock Off removed important items from Poison-, Psychic-, and Flying-type answers. Contrary also turns opposing stat drops such as Intimidate into boosts, making some conventional forms of physical counterplay actively harmful. Its limitations are severe: Dark/Psychic supplies almost no defensive resistances, Bug attacks deal quadruple damage, base 73 Speed is mediocre, and Rest is often its only reliable recovery. Mega Malamar is a much newer development and should be separated from that established history. Its base 120 Special Defense, improved offenses and Speed, and continued access to Contrary give the same Superpower snowballing strategy a much larger statistical foundation, but the quadruple Bug weakness and Fairy weakness remain intact.
Inkay in Nuzlockes
Malamar can be powerful in a Nuzlocke because Contrary transforms Superpower from a self-weakening attack into a move that simultaneously raises Attack and Defense. Once a safe first boost is obtained, physical opponents can become progressively easier to handle, and Knock Off provides reliable Dark STAB without recoil. The major danger is the quadruple Bug weakness: U-turn, X-Scissor, First Impression, or unexpected Bug coverage can deal catastrophic damage even after Defense boosts. Fairy is also super effective, and Dark/Psychic otherwise offers very little resistance utility beyond a Psychic immunity. Mega Malamar's much higher Special Defense and improved Speed make neutral matchups safer, but neither Mega Evolution nor Contrary removes those type weaknesses. Careful is especially useful when building around repeated Superpower boosts because Defense rises naturally while Special Defense does not.

It flashes the light-emitting spots on its body, which drains its opponent’s will to fight. It takes the opportunity to scuttle away and hide.
It draws prey near with its blinking lights and then wraps them up in its long tentacles and holds them in place.
When exchanging information with others of its kind, it flashes the light-emitting spots on its body in a complex rhythm.
It spins while making its luminescent spots flash. These spots allow it to communicate with others by using different patterns of light.
By exposing foes to the blinking of its luminescent spots, Inkay demoralizes them, and then it seizes the chance to flee.

Inkay Biology and Behavior
Inkay uses the glowing spots inside its translucent body for both defense and communication. Rapid flashes can daze a threatening opponent and make it lose the will to fight, giving Inkay time to escape. The same lights can attract prey close enough for Inkay to ensnare it with its tentacles, and complex flashing rhythms are used to communicate with other Inkay. Animated portrayals also show it spraying ink from its mouth.

Inkay Size Comparison: BETA
Inkay is listed at 1' 4" (0.4 m) and shown in an in-chart visual comparison.

How is visual size determined?
Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.
For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.
The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
