Kecleon Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage
Using Kecleon in a Playthrough
Kecleon is a slow pure Normal Pokemon with modest base 90 Attack but an exceptional base 120 Special Defense, making it much better at absorbing special attacks than its appearance suggests. Its signature Color Change ability changes Kecleon's type to match the type of a damaging move that hits it, which can sometimes create a useful resistance to a follow-up attack but can just as easily give an intelligent opponent a new super-effective weakness to exploit. A huge movepool gives Kecleon physical Normal offense, elemental coverage, Shadow Sneak, Sucker Punch, Drain Punch, Knock Off, Recover, status, and other utility depending on generation, helping compensate for its poor base 40 Speed. From Generation VI, the Hidden Ability Protean provides a much more offensive interpretation of the same theme by changing Kecleon's type to the type of the move it is about to use, granting STAB to an enormous variety of attacks and allowing deliberate defensive type changes. Kecleon is therefore a flexible story Pokemon with excellent special bulk and surprising coverage, but its low Speed and base 70 physical Defense mean strong physical attackers remain a major weakness regardless of how cleverly its type changes are used.
Kecleon in Competitive Pokémon
Kecleon has generally remained a lower-tier Pokemon, but base 120 Special Defense, base 90 Attack, recovery, priority, and an enormous movepool have repeatedly given it more substance than its low base-stat total implies. In ADV NU, Color Change was a mixed blessing: Kecleon could absorb special attacks very effectively, but opponents could deliberately change its type with one move and then strike the newly created weakness with another. Generation VI gave Kecleon Protean, creating a far more threatening wallbreaking niche because every attack could receive STAB while simultaneously changing Kecleon's defensive type before the move was used. Knock Off, Drain Punch, Shadow Sneak, Sucker Punch, and broad coverage made Protean Kecleon difficult for slower teams to switch into, while priority compensated partially for its terrible base 40 Speed. Faster offensive teams remain a major problem because 60 HP and 70 Defense offer little physical safety, but Protean transformed Kecleon from a peculiar special sponge into a legitimate lower-tier offensive utility Pokemon.
Kecleon in Nuzlockes
Kecleon can be a useful Nuzlocke Pokemon because base 120 Special Defense provides a strong cushion against many special attacks and Recover can give it dependable longevity where available. Color Change requires careful attention, however, because every damaging hit may rewrite Kecleon's weaknesses; an opponent with varied coverage can intentionally or accidentally turn one safe matchup into a dangerous one on the following turn. Protean is generally easier to control when available because the player chooses Kecleon's new type by choosing a move, allowing deliberate immunities or resistances while also strengthening attacks through STAB. Priority such as Shadow Sneak or Sucker Punch can mitigate the awful Speed stat, but physical attacks remain dangerous because Kecleon's Defense is far less impressive than its Special Defense. It rewards players who actively track typing from turn to turn, making it powerful in planned encounters but less comfortable for blind battles than a Pokemon with a fixed defensive profile.

Kecleon Biology and Behavior
Kecleon can alter nearly the entire color pattern of its body at will, blending so precisely into surrounding vegetation and terrain that it can become almost invisible to prey and observers. One feature always remains visible: the red zigzag stripe around its abdomen cannot change color, creating a permanent visual weakness in otherwise extraordinary camouflage. Kecleon uses concealment actively while hunting, approaching unnoticed before shooting out a long, elastic tongue to ensnare prey. Its coloration also reflects emotion and health rather than camouflage alone, and darker coloration is associated with healthier individuals; startling Kecleon can cause it to revert suddenly to its ordinary color. The species is surprisingly sensitive socially as well - if it remains hidden for too long without anyone noticing, it may become offended and refuse to reveal itself at all.

Kecleon Size Comparison: BETA
Kecleon is listed at 3' 3" (1.0 m) and shown in an in-chart visual comparison.

How is visual size determined?
Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.
For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.
The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
