Pyukumuku Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage

Using Pyukumuku in a Playthrough

Pyukumuku does not evolve and is almost completely unlike a conventional story Pokémon: it has base 130 Defense and 130 Special Defense but only 55 HP, base 5 Speed, negligible special offense, and an extremely limited supply of direct damaging moves. Pure Water typing leaves only Grass and Electric weaknesses while resisting Fire, Ice, Steel, and Water, so its raw defensive profile can be impressive when the opponent lacks Taunt, setup-breaking tools, or super-effective coverage. Its Hidden Ability Unaware is usually far more useful for sustained play than Innards Out because Unaware ignores the opponent's offensive stat boosts, allowing Pyukumuku to stand in front of certain setup sweepers that would overwhelm ordinary walls. Recover, Toxic in generations where it can use it, Block, Soak, Counter, Mirror Coat, and other utility moves can create elaborate stall strategies, but they are dramatically slower and less convenient during a normal playthrough than simply using a Pokémon capable of reliable direct damage. Innards Out only activates when Pyukumuku is knocked out, so although it can punish the attacker in ordinary battles, it is obviously undesirable as a planned strategy in any playthrough where keeping the Pokémon alive matters. Bold or Calm can strengthen one side of its already excellent defenses, but for most story teams Pyukumuku is a specialized defensive choice rather than an efficient general-purpose party member.

Pyukumuku in Competitive Pokémon

Pyukumuku is one of the clearest examples of a Pokémon whose competitive usefulness comes from a narrow defensive mechanic rather than offensive statistics. In Generation VII it was officially ZU, but Unaware, base 130 Defense and Special Defense, Recover, Block, Toxic, Spite, and Soak gave it legitimate niches even in much higher formats, including dedicated OU stall teams. Unaware let it ignore the Attack and Special Attack boosts of setup sweepers, while Block plus Toxic or Spite could trap and slowly remove passive targets that other Unaware users merely forced out. The cost of this specialization was extreme passivity: Pyukumuku had essentially no conventional offensive presence, allowing Taunt users, Substitute users, certain Mold Breaker attackers, and many strong wallbreakers to exploit it. Sword and Shield again placed Pyukumuku in ZU, where Unaware stall and Counter/Mirror Coat strategies in specialized formats preserved its niche without changing its fundamental limitations. It is unavailable in standard Scarlet/Violet and therefore has no ordinary SV usage-tier career; historically, its significance lies in being an unusually pure stall Pokémon that could appear above its nominal tier when a team specifically needed its version of Unaware.

Pyukumuku in Nuzlockes

Pyukumuku can wall certain opponents extremely safely in a Nuzlocke, but its lack of conventional offense means every matchup must be evaluated for how the battle will actually end rather than merely whether Pyukumuku can survive. Unaware is the preferred Ability when available because it prevents setup sweepers from simply boosting past its defenses, while Recover gives it genuine long-term staying power. Counter and Mirror Coat can produce large retaliatory damage, but both require Pyukumuku to absorb the opponent's attack first and therefore become dangerous if the damage range, attacking category, critical-hit possibility, or coverage move is misread. Innards Out should never be considered a desirable Nuzlocke strategy because its effect requires Pyukumuku to faint, directly conflicting with the purpose of preserving the encounter. Likewise, Memento is normally inappropriate because it deliberately sacrifices the user, even if the resulting stat drops would help another teammate. Against opponents without Taunt, Substitute, strong Grass/Electric coverage, or overwhelming wallbreaking power, Unaware plus Recover can provide exceptional insurance, but Pyukumuku's extreme passivity makes blind battles significantly less predictable than its raw defensive numbers imply.

Shield

It’s covered in a slime that keeps its skin moist, allowing it to stay on land for days without drying up.

Sun

It lives in shallow seas, such as areas near a beach. It can eject its internal organs, which it uses to engulf its prey or battle enemies.

Moon

These Pokémon line the beaches. The sticky mucous that covers their bodies can be used to soothe sunburned skin. How convenient!

Ultra Sun

The tradition known as Pyukumuku chucking started from the custom of throwing Pyukumuku back into the sea after they wash onshore.

Ultra Moon

Its entire body is covered in its own slime. If you accidentally step on one, you’ll slip, and it will get mad and smack you!

Sword

It lives in warm, shallow waters. If it encounters a foe, it will spit out its internal organs as a means to punch them.

Pyukumuku Biology and Behavior

Pyukumuku selects a favored spot and may remain there indefinitely, returning to the same location even after being physically moved; after exhausting the available food, it can stubbornly remain until it begins to starve. Its body is coated in a viscous fluid that prevents it from drying out for roughly a week on land, and humans use the same substance as a moisturizing skin treatment. Pyukumuku can expel its internal organs through its mouth and shape them into structures such as a fist, which it uses to strike anyone who steps on it; it particularly dislikes having its mouth or dorsal spikes touched. Tourists often regard stranded Pyukumuku as unsightly or accidentally step on them, creating paid beach work in Alola centered on throwing them back into the sea. Local people also deliberately return thin individuals to the water so that they can find food rather than starve in the spots they refuse to abandon. Pyukumuku has a documented symbiotic relationship with Pelipper, which may scoop it from the water and carry it.

How is visual size determined?

Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.

For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.

The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
