Komala Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage
Using Komala in a Playthrough
Komala does not evolve and is available around the middle of the Alola story on Route 11, while Scarlet and Violet make it available much earlier in several Paldean areas. Its base 115 Attack and 95 Special Defense are strong for a single-stage Pokémon, but base 65 HP, Defense, and Speed mean it is noticeably less comfortable against fast physical attackers than against special damage. Comatose is its defining Ability and keeps Komala permanently treated as asleep while preventing other major status conditions from being inflicted, so burn cannot halve its Attack and paralysis cannot undermine its already modest Speed. Strong Normal STAB, Earthquake, Knock Off, U-turn, Rapid Spin, and setup or recovery options have varied by generation and allow Komala to act as much more than a simple one-move physical attacker. Normal typing provides a useful Ghost immunity and only one weakness, Fighting, but offers no ordinary resistances, so Komala's good special bulk should not be confused with a large number of safe switch-in opportunities. Adamant is the most straightforward beneficial Nature for maximizing its 115 Attack, while Careful can be reasonable when emphasizing its naturally stronger special-defense profile.
Komala in Competitive Pokémon
Komala has remained a low-tier Pokémon, but Comatose and a surprisingly deep utility movepool have repeatedly given it more competitive value than its ZU labels alone imply. In Generation VII it was ZU and one of that tier's more versatile Normal-types, combining base 115 Attack with Return, Earthquake, Knock Off, U-turn, Rapid Spin, Toxic, Wish, Bulk Up, or Swords Dance depending on the team's needs. Comatose is strategically excellent because Komala cannot be burned, poisoned, paralyzed, frozen, or put to sleep by an opponent while still counting as asleep for specific move interactions, making conventional status-based counterplay ineffective. Its main restrictions are physical fragility, base 65 Speed, and the lack of super-effective Normal STAB, which often force it to rely on coverage instead of overpowering bulky opponents directly. Komala was absent from Sword and Shield but returned in Scarlet/Violet, where it is currently listed in ZU and remains a niche physical attacker and utility option rather than a major usage-tier force. Its competitive history is therefore modest but coherent: good Attack, status immunity, and role compression have kept it useful in the lowest tiers without ever overcoming its mediocre physical bulk and Speed enough to establish a higher-tier career.
Komala in Nuzlockes
Komala's permanent Comatose state is extremely valuable in a Nuzlocke because the usual dangers of poison, paralysis, burn, freeze, and enemy sleep strategies are effectively removed from consideration. Burn immunity is especially important for a physical attacker, since Komala never has to worry about its base 115 Attack being cut in half by an unexpected burn. Its Ghost immunity can create completely safe switches when the opponent's move is known, and its respectable Special Defense gives it decent margin against many neutral special attacks. The weakness is physical combat: base 65 HP and Defense provide much less room for a bad damage estimate, while base 65 Speed means Komala often takes the hit before it can retaliate. U-turn can be useful for escaping unfavorable situations and Rapid Spin can remove hazards in games where Komala has access to it, but recoil-heavy moves such as Double-Edge should be evaluated carefully because Komala lacks enormous HP reserves. Comatose makes Komala unusually predictable from a status-management perspective, which is a genuine safety advantage in blind or semi-blind challenge runs even though its raw defensive stats remain only moderate.

It is born asleep, and it dies asleep. All its movements are apparently no more than the results of it tossing and turning in its dreams.
The log it holds was given to it by its parents at birth. It has also been known to cling to the arm of a friendly Trainer.
It stays asleep from the moment it’s born. When it falls into a deep sleep, it stops moving altogether.
It remains asleep from birth to death as a result of the sedative properties of the leaves that form its diet.

Komala Biology and Behavior
Komala spends its entire life asleep, yet it can eat, travel, battle, and react to its surroundings without waking; apparent changes in expression are described as manifestations of whatever it is dreaming. The permanent sleep state results from its diet of particular leaves containing toxins that Komala alone can break down, producing sedative compounds inside its body. Each Komala receives a wooden log from its parents at birth and clings to it continuously; removing the log prevents restful sleep and causes the Pokémon to thrash violently, although a Komala may substitute the arm of a Trainer it deeply trusts. Its saliva inherits strong sedative properties from its diet, and diluted Komala drool was historically used both as a sleep aid and as an anesthetic during surgery. Hypno are known predators of Komala in Alola and are described as preferring them over humans, giving the otherwise sleepy species a documented place in the region's food web.

Komala Size Comparison: BETA
Komala is listed at 1' 4" (0.4 m); this chart uses a pose-adjusted visual scale because large or floppy ears can extend above the substantial head.

How is visual size determined?
Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.
For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.
The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
Komala is currently tagged for large ears.
