Smoliv Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage
Using Smoliv in a Playthrough
Smoliv can be caught very early in Scarlet and Violet, evolves into Dolliv at level 25, and reaches Arboliva at level 35, giving the line a convenient progression through the main story. Arboliva becomes a slow but genuinely powerful special attacker with base 125 Special Attack, 109 Special Defense, and respectable physical bulk, while its base 39 Speed means it should usually expect to take a hit before acting. Grass/Normal provides a useful Ghost immunity and resistances to Water, Electric, Grass, and Ground, but it also carries six weaknesses—Fire, Ice, Fighting, Poison, Flying, and Bug—so the typing demands more matchup awareness than its bulk initially suggests. Seed Sower automatically creates Grassy Terrain when Arboliva is hit, boosting grounded Grass attacks and providing passive recovery, which can combine naturally with Giga Drain or other sustaining tools during longer fights. Its Hidden Ability Harvest instead supports Berry-based longevity, particularly in sun, but Seed Sower is usually more immediately useful without specialized planning. Arboliva has strong special options such as Leaf Storm, Giga Drain, Hyper Voice, Earth Power, and Terrain Pulse, letting it choose between immediate power, recovery, and coverage rather than relying on one attack. Modest is an excellent general Nature for maximizing its special damage, while Quiet can suit very slow or Trick Room-oriented teams and Calm is appropriate when emphasizing special bulk and sustain.
Smoliv in Competitive Pokémon
Arboliva is currently an SV ZU Pokémon, but within that environment it has a meaningful identity as a bulky special attacker rather than merely a low-stat Grass type. Its base 125 Special Attack gives Choice Specs sets substantial immediate power, with Grass STAB such as Leaf Storm or Giga Drain complemented by Hyper Voice and coverage such as Earth Power; Smogon's current ZU material also emphasizes its ability to pressure many neutral switch-ins despite the tier placement. Seed Sower improves longevity by establishing Grassy Terrain after Arboliva is struck, and defensive variants can stack that recovery with Leftovers, Leech Seed, Giga Drain, or other healing tools. Harvest offers an alternate Berry-centered route and becomes perfectly reliable at restoring a consumed Berry under sun, but it is more team- and set-dependent than Seed Sower. Arboliva's excellent Special Attack and Special Defense are held back by base 39 Speed and a Grass/Normal typing with six weaknesses, making it vulnerable to being forced out or overwhelmed before it can exploit its staying power. Terastallization can repair that defensive typing or strengthen a chosen offensive role, but the need to spend Tera illustrates one of the costs of making Arboliva function against stronger threats. Modest is the most natural Nature for offensive sets, while Calm and occasionally Quiet support bulkier or speed-indifferent approaches.
Smoliv in Nuzlockes
The Smoliv line is attractive in a Nuzlocke because it is available near the beginning of Paldea and reaches its final evolution at level 35 without an item, friendship requirement, or other risky evolution condition. Arboliva's 78/90/109 bulk and strong special offense allow it to win many neutral matchups, while its Ghost immunity and four resistances can create valuable planned switches. The chief danger is its extremely low Speed combined with six weaknesses: even a healthy Arboliva often has to absorb a hit before responding, so blind use against opponents with broad coverage can be hazardous. Seed Sower helps compensate by creating Grassy Terrain whenever an attack connects, adding passive recovery and powering Grass moves, while Giga Drain offers direct and perfectly accurate healing through offense. Leaf Storm delivers much higher immediate power but sharply lowers Special Attack afterward, potentially forcing a switch at an awkward moment, and Leech Seed introduces accuracy variance if used as the foundation of a defensive plan. Because Grassy Terrain affects the field rather than only Arboliva, players should also remember that opposing grounded Pokémon receive its recovery benefits and can exploit boosted Grass moves. Used against known Water-, Ground-, Electric-, or Ghost-oriented targets rather than thrown into unknown coverage, Arboliva can be a durable and high-value team member.

It protects itself from enemies by emitting oil from the fruit on its head. This oil is bitter and astringent enough to make someone flinch.
This Pokémon converts nutrients into oil, which it stores in the fruit on its head. It can easily go a whole week without eating or drinking.

Smoliv Biology and Behavior
Smoliv is a small olive-like Pokémon that stores oil inside the fruit on top of its head, producing that oil from nutrients gathered through photosynthesis. Its stored reserves are sufficient for it to go about a week without eating or drinking. The oil is extremely bitter and astringent rather than edible; when startled or attacked, Smoliv sprays it to slow the threat and then flees. It favors dry, sunny climates and spends much of its time sunbathing.

Smoliv Size Comparison: BETA
Smoliv is listed at 1' 0" (0.3 m) and shown in an in-chart visual comparison.

How is visual size determined?
Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.
For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.
The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
