Swalot Swalot Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage
Using Swalot in a Playthrough
Gulpin evolves into Swalot at level 26, producing a pure Poison Pokemon built around high HP, balanced defenses, status, and unusual utility rather than strong direct offense. Swalot reaches base 100 HP with 83 Defense and Special Defense, giving it reasonable mixed durability, but base 73 offenses and 55 Speed mean battles can become slow unless it is exploiting poison or coverage effectively. Sludge Bomb or later Sludge Wave provides dependable Poison STAB, while Yawn, Toxic, Encore, Stockpile, Amnesia, Pain Split, Earthquake, Ice Beam, and other options vary across generations and can make Swalot surprisingly adaptable. Liquid Ooze punishes opponents that attempt to recover HP with draining moves, while Sticky Hold prevents its held item from being removed and Gluttony can support Berry-based strategies. Pure Poison typing leaves only Ground and Psychic weaknesses and provides useful Grass, Fighting, Poison, Bug, and later Fairy resistances, making Swalot a serviceable bulky utility Pokemon even though stronger Poison-types often offer more specialized advantages.
Swalot in Competitive Pokémon
Swalot has spent most of its competitive history in low tiers because its respectable 100/83/83 bulk is paired with weak offenses, poor Speed, and no convenient reliable recovery outside options such as Pain Split or Rest. It can use Toxic, Yawn, Encore, Knock Off, Pain Split, and broad special or physical coverage to annoy opponents, while Liquid Ooze can punish Giga Drain, Leech Seed, and other draining strategies and Sticky Hold can preserve its item. The problem is competition: defensive Poison-types such as Weezing and Muk usually offer stronger abilities, better recovery patterns, greater offensive pressure, or more useful resistances. Smogon analyses consequently treat Swalot as a niche defensive Pokemon rather than a metagame staple, with its value coming from movepool flexibility and specific matchups rather than a defining strategy. Its compact weakness profile and decent mixed defenses are real advantages, but they have rarely been enough to overcome passivity and the ease with which stronger Ground- and Psychic-type attackers pressure it.
Swalot in Nuzlockes
Swalot can be a useful Nuzlocke Pokemon because pure Poison typing is straightforward to plan around and its large HP pool with balanced defenses provides a reasonable margin for error against neutral attacks. Yawn can create guaranteed pressure to switch or fall asleep, while Toxic and other status moves allow Swalot to defeat bulky opponents without relying on its mediocre attacking stats. Liquid Ooze is particularly useful against known draining moves, and Sticky Hold can protect an important held item in games where item removal is common. The main concern is that slow battles expose Swalot to more critical hits and secondary effects, while strong Ground and Psychic attacks target its only two ordinary weaknesses and can overwhelm it quickly. It is safest as a bulky status specialist against predictable opponents rather than as the team member expected to finish every battle efficiently.

Swalot Biology and Behavior
Swalot expands the digestive abilities of Gulpin to an extraordinary degree, swallowing almost anything whole and digesting every part of it except the lining of its own stomach. Its mouth can stretch wide enough to fit something as large as an automobile tire, while the rest of the body can expand and contract dramatically as needed. Swalot actively favors poisonous and toxic substances as food rather than merely tolerating them, an unusual diet for a creature that also produces powerful toxins of its own. When attacking prey or defending itself, it secretes an intensely poisonous fluid from follicles across its body and can coat a target before swallowing it. Even while asleep Swalot may rest with its enormous mouth open, behavior researchers interpret as dreaming about an especially large meal.

Swalot Size Comparison: BETA
Swalot is listed at 5' 7" (1.7 m) and shown in an in-chart visual comparison.

How is visual size determined?
Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.
For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.
The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
