Using Wailord in a Playthrough
Wailmer evolves into Wailord at level 40, producing a pure Water Pokemon with the enormous base 170 HP stat but only base 45 Defense and Special Defense. That distribution makes Wailord look much bulkier than it actually is: the huge health pool absorbs ordinary damage well enough, but strong attacks still remove large portions of its HP because the underlying defenses are so low. Base 90 Special Attack supports Surf, Hydro Pump, Ice Beam, and other special coverage, while Water Spout can reach tremendous power when Wailord is at or near full health; Water attacks are special in Generation III, so this role fits its stats from the beginning. Water Veil prevents burns and therefore avoids both residual burn damage and Attack reduction when physical options are used, while Oblivious and later Pressure provide alternative utility depending on generation. Its simple Water typing leaves only Grass and Electric weaknesses, but the late level-40 evolution and mediocre Speed make Wailord more of a bulky mid-to-late-game attacker than an effortless all-purpose tank.
Wailord in Competitive Pokémon
Wailord has generally remained in lower competitive tiers, but it has had periods of genuine effectiveness rather than being merely a novelty defined by size. In ADV NU, Smogon considers Wailord one of the format's better Pokemon because base 170 HP, base 90 Special Attack, strong Water STAB, Ice Beam, Hidden Power coverage, and even Self-Destruct allow it to combine offensive pressure with useful defensive matchups. Water Spout offers an especially threatening option when Wailord is near full health, while RestTalk and Roar have supported more defensive variants that use the massive HP pool to repeatedly check selected attackers. Later generations exposed the weakness of its stat distribution more clearly: base 45 defenses make that enormous HP less efficient than it appears, and stronger Water-types often offer better resistances, recovery, or utility. Pressure has enabled obscure PP-stalling strategies in some later low tiers, but Wailord's most credible competitive identity remains that of a bulky Water attacker whose size and HP support offense rather than guarantee true wall-like durability.
Wailord in Nuzlockes
Wailmer and Wailord can be dependable Nuzlocke Water-types because their huge HP pools provide visible room for error and pure Water typing leaves only Grass and Electric weaknesses. The important caution is that Wailord's base 45 defenses are poor, so its enormous health bar can fall much faster than expected against strong neutral attacks and especially against special Electric or Grass moves. Water Veil is useful insurance against burn, while Surf and Ice Beam provide reliable coverage and Water Spout can delete opponents safely when Wailord enters at full health. The level-40 evolution is relatively late, leaving Wailmer as the practical stage for a substantial portion of many games, although Wailmer itself already possesses unusually high HP. Wailord is therefore safer than a fragile sweeper but should be evaluated by actual damage taken rather than by the intimidating size of its maximum-HP number.

Wailord Biology and Behavior
Wailord is one of the largest known Pokemon and lives in ocean-going pods whose members cooperate when traveling and feeding. Despite its enormous size it has an easygoing, playful temperament and is capable of launching its entire body out of the sea before crashing back down with tremendous force. The resulting splash and shock waves can stun opponents and herd schools of prey together, allowing Wailord to swallow huge quantities of Wishiwashi and other food in a single feeding event. Very few predators can threaten a full-grown Wailord; Dhelmise is the only natural predator consistently documented for the adult species. The combination of group living, massive body size, and shockwave-assisted feeding makes Wailord less a solitary giant than a highly social open-ocean hunter.

Wailord Size Comparison: BETA
Wailord is listed at 47' 7" (14.5 m) and shown in an in-chart visual comparison.

How is visual size determined?
Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.
For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.
The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
