Using Spoink in a Playthrough
Spoink evolves into Grumpig at level 32, producing a pure Psychic-type with strong Special Defense, decent Special Attack and Speed, and a broad support movepool. Grumpig's base 110 Special Defense makes it particularly comfortable against many special attackers, while base 90 Special Attack supports Psychic or Psyshock and coverage such as Power Gem, Focus Blast, Shadow Ball, or elemental options depending on generation. Thick Fat is often its most useful ability because Fire- and Ice-type attacks deal reduced damage, expanding the number of special opponents Grumpig can switch into safely, while Own Tempo prevents confusion and later also blocks Intimidate's Attack reduction. Calm Mind, Thunder Wave, Taunt, screens, Rest, Heal Bell, and other utility can give it several story roles, although base 65 Defense leaves strong physical attacks as the obvious pressure point. Grumpig is therefore a solid special tank and support Pokemon rather than an overpowering Psychic attacker, and stronger Psychic-types may eventually offer more immediate offense or recovery.
Spoink in Competitive Pokémon
Grumpig had its strongest early competitive identity in ADV UU, where base 110 Special Defense and Thick Fat made it one of the tier's better special tanks and let it handle selected Fire- and Ice-type attackers unusually well for a Psychic-type. Calm Mind could turn that natural special bulk into a setup win condition, while Psychic, coverage, Substitute, Rest, Trick, Thunder Wave, Heal Bell, Whirlwind, or Taunt supported several defensive and disruptive variants across generations. Its problem has always been role competition: base 90 Special Attack is only moderate, base 65 Defense is exploitable, and the lack of convenient reliable recovery leaves Grumpig easier to wear down than bulkier Psychic-types such as Hypno or Musharna. Later power creep pushed it steadily downward, with modern Smogon formats treating it as a niche or heavily outclassed lower-tier Pokemon whose main distinguishing feature remains Thick Fat. Grumpig is therefore historically notable as a legitimate special tank rather than a major offensive force, with its best performances coming in metagames where Fire- and Ice-type coverage are common enough for Thick Fat to matter.
Spoink in Nuzlockes
Grumpig can be a dependable Nuzlocke Pokemon because strong Special Defense and Thick Fat create a wide range of predictable safe matchups against special Fire-, Ice-, Fighting-, and Psychic-related attacks. Spoink is less durable before its level-32 evolution, so training it through the middle game should be handled carefully rather than assuming the final form's special bulk already exists. Calm Mind can make favorable special matchups increasingly secure, while Thunder Wave, screens, or other support can reduce risk for the rest of the team. Physical Dark, Ghost, and Bug attacks are the main danger because they hit weaknesses while targeting Grumpig's much lower Defense, and it lacks the reliable instant recovery that would make repeated tanking completely comfortable. Used against known special attackers rather than as a blind general-purpose wall, Grumpig offers a respectable margin for error.

Spoink Biology and Behavior
Spoink has no hind legs and moves by bouncing continuously on its spring-like tail, but the motion is far more than locomotion: the repeated bouncing is required to keep its heart beating. It continues bouncing even while asleep, making constant rhythmic movement a basic requirement for survival rather than a voluntary habit. The pearl balanced on its head is produced by Clamperl and amplifies Spoink's psychic powers; losing it leaves the Pokemon weakened and triggers an urgent search for a replacement, preferably an even larger pearl. Spoink is poor at distinguishing its proper pearl from other round objects and may mistakenly balance unrelated items on its head while searching. Wild individuals live in mountainous areas and dig for underground mushrooms, giving this strange Psychic-type a surprisingly ordinary foraging habit beneath its life-or-death dependence on bouncing.

Spoink Size Comparison: BETA
Spoink is listed at 2' 4" (0.7 m) and shown in an in-chart visual comparison.

How is visual size determined?
Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.
For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.
The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
