Archaludon Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage
Using Archaludon in a Playthrough
Duraludon and Archaludon form an unusual cross-generational family: Duraludon was fully evolved in Sword and Shield, while Scarlet and Violet's Indigo Disk added Archaludon, which evolves from Duraludon when exposed to a Metal Alloy. Both are Steel/Dragon, an excellent defensive typing with a Poison immunity, many resistances, and only Fighting and Ground weaknesses. Duraludon already has strong base 120 Special Attack, 115 Defense, and 85 Speed, but its base 50 Special Defense is a major flaw. Archaludon raises the family to a 600 base-stat total with 90 HP, 130 Defense, 125 Special Attack, 65 Special Defense, and the same 85 Speed, making it substantially harder to remove physically while still vulnerable to strong special attacks. Archaludon's Stamina raises Defense every time it is damaged by a move, which pairs naturally with Body Press, while Sturdy guarantees survival from full HP and Stalwart prevents its attacks from being redirected in doubles. Its signature Electro Shot raises Special Attack and attacks on the following turn, but rain removes the charge turn entirely, turning Archaludon into an especially effective rain attacker alongside Draco Meteor or Dragon Pulse, Flash Cannon, and Body Press. Duraludon cannot evolve in Sword and Shield because Metal Alloy and Archaludon did not yet exist there; in those games, a Gigantamax-capable Duraludon can instead use G-Max Depletion, which damages the target and reduces the PP of the last move used by each opposing Pokémon. For ordinary Scarlet/Violet play, evolving Duraludon is usually a direct upgrade unless the player specifically values Duraludon's lower weight or different Ability options.
Archaludon in Competitive Pokémon
Duraludon and Archaludon have had radically different competitive ceilings. In Sword/Shield singles, Duraludon finished in PUBL and functioned mainly as a lower-tier special wallbreaker or Stealth Rock setter, using Draco Meteor, Flash Cannon, Body Press, Thunderbolt, and occasionally Eject Pack to generate momentum. Its Steel/Dragon typing and physical Defense were useful, but base 50 Special Defense left it vulnerable even to some resisted special attacks, and stronger Steel- and Dragon-type competition kept it from becoming a major upper-tier threat. Scarlet/Violet currently lists unevolved Duraludon in NU, where it retains a useful mixture of offense, physical bulk, and utility. Archaludon was dramatically stronger from the moment it arrived in The Indigo Disk: Stamina, 130 Defense, 125 Special Attack, Body Press, and rain-accelerated Electro Shot made it an exceptional tank and snowballing wallbreaker. Rain sets commonly paired Stamina with Assault Vest, letting Archaludon patch its weaker special side while repeatedly gaining Defense and using one-turn Electro Shot to raise Special Attack before dealing damage. That combination proved too constraining for standard SV OU; after a formal suspect test, 94 of 124 counted votes favored a ban, a 75.81% majority, and Archaludon was removed from OU in February 2024. It is therefore currently classified as Uber in standard SV tiering, although it also sees play in formats such as Ubers UU, draft, doubles, and VGC where its defensive profile and rain synergy remain valuable. Gigantamax Duraludon's competitive history should be separated from ordinary singles tiering because Smogon's standard Sword/Shield singles formats banned Dynamax; its G-Max Depletion niche belongs to Dynamax-legal formats rather than Duraludon's normal PUBL résumé.
Archaludon in Nuzlockes
The Duraludon family is generally excellent for permadeath play because Steel/Dragon supplies many safe switch-in opportunities and only two weaknesses, while both stages possess strong physical Defense. Duraludon's greatest danger is special damage: base 50 Special Defense can make seemingly harmless neutral or even resisted special attacks much more threatening than the typing suggests. Archaludon improves that side only to base 65, so evolving does not remove the need to scout special Fighting-, Ground-, or strong neutral coverage, but 90 HP and 130 Defense give it excellent physical margin. Stamina is particularly Nuzlocke-friendly because every damaging hit raises Defense, allowing Archaludon to become progressively safer against physical opponents and strengthen Body Press without spending a setup turn. Sturdy offers a different form of insurance by preventing a one-hit knockout from full HP, although hazards, weather, or prior chip can disable that protection. Electro Shot is risky outside rain because the charging turn leaves Archaludon exposed, whereas rain makes it both immediate and self-boosting; Dragon Pulse and Flash Cannon are safer routine attacks than Draco Meteor when accuracy and stat consistency matter more than peak power. In Sword and Shield, Gigantamax Duraludon can gain temporary HP and field pressure, but it should still be treated as a Pokémon with weak special durability once the Dynamax turns end.

Archaludon Biology and Behavior
Archaludon is a massive metallic Pokémon adapted to boreal mountains, where it digs holes while searching for food and possesses enough structural durability to remain unfazed even by cave-ins. Unlike an Electric-type that generates its own electricity, Archaludon gathers static electricity from the environment through terminal-like structures on its limbs, head, and tail and stores that charge for later use. When threatened, it drops onto all fours, straightens and braces its body into a bridge-like configuration that sacrifices mobility for a much sturdier center of gravity. From that position it connects its electrical terminals like suspension cables and fires a tremendously powerful beam through the tube inside its mouth. Storms and other inclement weather allow the terminals to collect static charge more quickly, directly explaining why its signature Electro Shot can be fired without a charging turn in rain.

Archaludon Size Comparison: BETA
Archaludon is listed at 6' 7" (2.0 m) and shown in an in-chart visual comparison.

How is visual size determined?
Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.
For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.
The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
