Gouging Fire Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage
Using Gouging Fire in a Playthrough
Gouging Fire is a standalone Fire/Dragon Paradox Pokémon introduced in The Indigo Disk and obtainable naturally only in Pokémon Scarlet; Violet players need trade or HOME access from a Scarlet source. It is a very late single-copy encounter: after completing Perrin's earlier photography quest and registering at least 200 species in the Blueberry Pokédex, Perrin reveals photographs that allow Gouging Fire to be found as a static encounter in Area Zero. Its 105 HP, 121 Defense, 93 Special Defense, and 115 Attack give it an unusual combination of genuine bulk and physical power, while Fire/Dragon has only three natural weaknesses—Ground, Rock, and Dragon—and resists or strongly resists several common attacking types. Dragon Dance raises Attack and Speed and can turn its merely moderate base 91 Speed into a sweeping stat, while Heat Crash is a perfectly accurate recoil-free Fire attack whose power often becomes very high because Gouging Fire is exceptionally heavy. Flare Blitz provides consistent maximum Fire power against heavy targets but carries substantial recoil, while Dragon Claw is a safer Dragon STAB than Outrage or Dragon Rush and Earthquake offers reliable coverage. Burning Bulwark is its signature defensive move, protecting against damaging attacks for the turn and burning an opponent that makes contact into the protection, making it particularly effective against physical attackers. Morning Sun gives direct recovery and becomes stronger in sunlight, while Protosynthesis can also use that same weather or Booster Energy to increase Gouging Fire's highest stat. Jolly is valuable for Dragon Dance and Speed-boosting Protosynthesis builds, while Adamant maximizes damage on bulkier or externally speed-controlled sets.
Gouging Fire in Competitive Pokémon
Gouging Fire is currently Uber in Scarlet/Violet after one of the generation's more unusual two-stage suspect-test histories. Its first OU suspect concluded on March 16, 2024 with only 42.34% support for a ban, leaving it legal, but metagame development exposed increasingly difficult Dragon Dance, sun, Booster Energy, and Breaking Swipe variants; a second suspect ended on September 7, 2024 with 91.14% support for a ban. Its problem in OU was not simply base 115 Attack: 105/121/93 bulk created many setup opportunities, Fire/Dragon was difficult to punish efficiently, Morning Sun supplied recovery, and Protosynthesis or sun could increase either power or Speed while also strengthening Fire attacks. Dragon Dance sets combined Flare Blitz or Heat Crash with Dragon STAB and Earthquake, while Breaking Swipe variants could lower an opponent's Attack and turn supposed physical checks into additional setup opportunities; defensive Terastallization expanded that range further. In Uber-level play it is much easier to pressure because base 91 Speed requires help and the tier's legendary attackers can overwhelm even its impressive bulk, but Dragon Dance, Loaded Dice Scale Shot, Flare Blitz, Morning Sun, and Burning Bulwark still give it a niche. Its doubles identity is notably more supportive: Breaking Swipe lowers both opponents' Attack, Howl raises its own and its ally's Attack, and Burning Bulwark punishes Fake Out or other contact attempts while Booster Energy can provide immediate Speed. That role was proven in official play during Regulation F, including a Gouging Fire on Nick Schrott's runner-up Masters team at the 2024 Dortmund Regional and additional top cuts at events such as Goiânia and Melbourne.
Gouging Fire in Nuzlockes
Gouging Fire is a powerful but extremely late Scarlet Nuzlocke encounter if the run permits Paradox and Legendary-like static Pokémon, since Perrin's quest and the 200-species Blueberry Pokédex requirement place it deep into DLC progression. Its natural 105/121/93 bulk and Fire/Dragon typing provide a large survival margin against neutral damage, with only Ground, Rock, and Dragon attacks hitting it super effectively under ordinary conditions. Burning Bulwark is excellent permadeath utility because it blocks damaging attacks for the turn and guarantees a burn on susceptible opponents that make contact, cutting the physical damage they deal afterward; it does not block status moves, so it should not be treated as identical to complete immunity for the turn. Morning Sun provides repeatable recovery and becomes stronger under harsh sunlight, which can simultaneously activate Protosynthesis and strengthen Gouging Fire's Fire STAB. Heat Crash is normally safer than Flare Blitz when its weight-based damage is sufficient because it has perfect accuracy and no recoil, while Dragon Claw avoids Outrage's multi-turn lock and confusion and avoids Dragon Rush's poor accuracy. Dragon Dance can enable an easy sweep in known matchups, but critical hits and unexpected Ground, Rock, or Dragon coverage still matter and should be checked before spending a turn setting up. With conservative move selection, Gouging Fire is one of the rare setup attackers whose natural bulk, reliable recovery, and defensive signature move can make the setup process itself comparatively safe.

There are scant few reports of this creature being sighted. One short video shows it rampaging and spouting pillars of flame.
It resembles an eerie Pokémon once shown in a paranormal magazine. That Pokémon was said to be an Entei regenerated from a fossil.

Gouging Fire Biology and Behavior
Gouging Fire is a massive quadrupedal Paradox Pokémon resembling Entei combined with a ceratopsian dinosaur, dominated by a huge golden, horned crest surrounding its face. Only a small number of sightings are documented, but one recorded specimen was seen rampaging while erupting pillars of flame, and reports attribute exceptionally powerful control of fire to the species. Its fur can be superheated so intensely that it both protects Gouging Fire and burns enemies that make physical contact, the biological basis of its exclusive Burning Bulwark move; rumors further claim that its roar can trigger magma eruptions. Occulture's claim that the creature is an Entei regenerated from a fossil is explicitly speculative rather than established fact. Its true origin remains unresolved: AI Sada calls Gouging Fire an ancient ancestor of Entei, while the Professor encountered at the Crystal Pool describes it as an Entei counterpart from another timeline, and Heath's Scarlet Book records a matching creature roughly two centuries before Sada's time machine existed.

Gouging Fire Size Comparison: BETA
Gouging Fire is listed at 11' 6" (3.5 m) and shown in an in-chart visual comparison.

How is visual size determined?
Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.
For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.
The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
